Okay..wierd title, wierd topic....Now that I am more aware of the power involved with menstruation, and the goddess ..and such, I don't know if I would do this sort of thing again..BUT...

There were a couple of times in my life, when an important event would be coming up...like a romantic weekend getaway of some sort..and I'd find out I was going to get my period THAT weekend. Well...I found a couple of ways to stop it, or make it so light that it was inperceptible. I've actually NEVER been with a man who WASN'T squeamish about such things.

Anyway...a friend that I used to work with told me that there is a special kind of portuguese wine that can make your period go away. Like..REALLY go away! I totally didn't believe her...but she told me to stop bye her house after work, and she'd give some to me. Well..she was good for her word. I stopped by her house, and got the wine (put it in a snapple bottle)...and hopped on a Train to NYC where I was supposed to rendevoux with my boyfriend at the time. Between the time that I got the wine, and the time I got into the hotel room with my Boyfriend at the time, it may have been...I don't know..three hours??? And my period was GONE!! I totally didn't believe it would work..but it did.

Another method of making it..KINDA dissappear (but not really..you're still menstruating..the guy just doesn't know it) I hear is the Deep Sea Sponge. I tried it..and it KINDA worked...but..(embarrassed), they can be difficult to insert and remove...and can sometimes, get lodged....( I went through a gymnastics routine trying to find mine.)...

Anyway..what you do, is get yourself a deep sea sponge from a naturopathic store or something, and cut it into a little circle, a little bigger than the circumfrence of a golf ball..and soak it until its wet and maneuverable, and insert it close to your cervix. This blocks the flow, and supposedly, works so well that your partner will never even know you are menstruating. The best thing, according to my friend about this ...is that you can just wash and reuse...instead of wasting tons of tampons. Not to mention, you can't have sex while using a tampon. Anway..I know this topic is kinda gross..but...a friend of mine passed this info on to me, and I thought I might pass it on to you. Personally..i never used the sponge as an alternative to tampon..only to make my time of month more CONVENIENT For my little vacation..

There are other "feminine products" these days that you can use to make your period unnoticeable and allow you to have sex while using in the stores as well. I haven't tried them but it might be something to check out..

Also, by the way, I really appreciate having a forum in which we can discuss feminine issues that intimately and not have to feel guilty or dirty about it. There's nothing "gross" about what you said, IMHO

I personally, don't have much of a problem talking about menstruation. But i know some people are very shy about the subject, and squeamish. Especially if any men are reading these threads :)

But I'm glad you are happy about the forum :)

Heheh! I had to read this several times to make sure it wasn't read the way I thought I read it the first time. (*Whew!* I'm out of breath!) I thought it said to have sex in the store while using it! 8O

Just a thought...the sea sponge...I wonder how safe it would be to use something like that? I wondered about if it has to be sterilized or something?

I think it's a shame that society has deemed menstration to be icky. It's a beautiful part of womanhood & should be celebrated instead of hidden away.

I have a question....

Does anyone feel that it may harm you in some way to "stop" or put off your cycle? I mean we menustruate for a reason and it is in tune with the natural rhythms of our body.

I am just curious, if anyone has a info.

Until recently I had a period every 2 weeks! No kiddin.
It started after my dd was born and she is now almost 6.
Doctors could not figure it out. The offered the possibility that maybe my "rhythms" had just gotten "derailed" after carrying her.I went for several tests only to find that nothing was wrong.

The doctor put me on paxil a few months back for depression(much to my disagreement!) but guess what?

I had had 4 months stright with a normal 28 day cycle. Odd??
I can't put it to anything other than the paxil. I have not changed anything. Diet, excercise, sleep patterns etc.....are all the same.

So, I am just curious to see if my natural rhythms were so out of whack(or maybe they weren't and the paxil has made them so now) who is to know for sure?If messing with it would be considered a health risk or not messing with it could be???

Hope that is understandable. I am getting tired and I truly don't think I am making much sense. Sorry, if it is....... :):):)

Recently I read some article on this about how some women choose not to take a break to have their period between each pill pack. Apparently doctors said that there was no problem with this at all, let alone purposely putting your period off a week or two for a holiday. They did suggest that a woman who chooses to do this goes and gets a pill designed for doing it - the hormones change weekly or something along that timeline, just like normal hormones in the body fluctuate. They also suggested the woman take a pregnancy test every 6 weeks or so to make sure she didn't get pregnant....

I agree with reanna here. Way back when I took the pill and skipped my period with it on purpose several times. I don't take the pill anymore, and won't take any other type of hormone for birth control for the same reason that I think skipping a period is not healthy. (Just my opinion.)

I, personally, don't like messing with my body's natural rhythm. Yes, it can be convenient to put off your period, and yes, it can be helpful to be on hormones to prevent pregnancy, but tricking your body to believe something is happening to it that isn't (being on hormones prevents ovulation) just isn't for me anymore. I guess I've just gotten to a point where I respect the way my body works so much that I don't want to mess with it. I'm in no way saying that others don't respect their bodies if they take birth control hormones and such. I totally respect everyone's choices. I'm just saying I can't do it.

As for the sea sponge..it doesn't stop your period...it simply makes it undetectable to men. And you can sterilize it by boiling it in water. It's been a natural form of "tampon" for a LONG time.

Well..taking the wine allowed me to have a wonderful weekend with my boyfriend at the time. Really wonderful. So I don't regret doing it. But it isn't something I would do OFTEN...I don't even know if I would do it again. Because it does throw off your cycle. And no..i don't think that is particularly healthy.

But for instance, a woman who's period is due the same week of her honey moon. I'll betcha SHE'D take the risk for that one time :)

I saw on educational television that there is nothing wrong with taking something to stop your period. In fact, the age of menapause has dropped significantly BECAUSE women are menstrating every month.
It used to be that women would have children and then breast feed that child for a few years, and then have another child and breast feed, etc. etc... so they only mensturated once every few years!!!
Therefore, some scientist said, it actually ISN'T normal for a woman to mensturate once a month.

Of course, I don't now how "scientific" this is, but it makes sense to me. I was with my sweety for 3 years before I started taking birth control the "normal" way and started having periods again. Yup. I went 3 years without having one. It was heaven.

Too true. Long ago babies were often nursed longer. Mother's milk was extremely nutritious and the extra vitamins and minerals helped protect the baby from various diseases and malnutrition. Children were nursed for years, not months, and the woman's primary job was to have children, so she didn't spend much time having her period...

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that you are not pregnant?

Like..as in...have you been sexually active in the last four months? If so...take a test, just in case..please!

Raspberry leaf tea, relaxes the muscles in the womb and i was told, can bring on a late period. It actually works for me. Black Cohosh might work similarly..not sure. Raspberry Leaf is safe to take during pregnancy..but i don't think black cohosh is. I think you might be missing your period (if you are not pregnant)...because of stress. Try drinking a LOT of water, and cut down on your stress, if possible. Do some relaxing meditations. Etc. Also..try the rasberry leaf tea. I hope it works. If not..I would go to the doctor. It could be a hormonal imbalance, or it could be another health problem. For instance, women who are not getting proper nourishment can skip periods. Are you very physically active? This is rather personal..but might you have an eating disorder? I only ask, because I know many gymnasts who have skipped periods for months. Or..who haven't even GOTTEN their periods by age 16! And missing periods is one thing an eating disorder can do to you. So please go to a doctor, and discuss this with him/her. I skipped a month or so once, and was not pregnant. The doctor gave me a test to make sure, and then a shot of hormones in the butt. Got my period about four days later. In the mean time..perhaps try eating more soy. Soy is a natural substitute for estrogen, and might regulate you a bit more.

one of my better friends stopped getting her period randomly.. for like... 6 months. never did figure out why.

Personally, i'm on depo provera (injectible birth control), which is SUPPOSED to stop my period, although i've had some spotting and long period-like episodes since my last shot (only had two shots so far.. so i'm not too worried since the bleeding is normal for the first year/4 shots). If you dont' mind hormonal treatments, and you aren't interested in concieving any time soon, you can try it out. Some women never have a period again until they stop taking it. It can also help with any cramps and pains and whatnot. But it's DEFINITELY not for everyone.

I dunno about randomly stopping periods, or starting them up again. I do know that extensive excersise can stop a period, or losing a lot of weight (gymnasts and dancers often only have 1 or 2 periods in a year). There are herbs (as mentioned) that you can take to help regulate your cycle, or birth control pills can help some people and you can also use them to skip a period.

There are also some very intense meditation and muscle excersises, involving energy transfer (it in most cases also involves intercourse, or at least mastrubation(sorry about my spelling), so if you're not sexualy active, or at all open enough with your body to do that, then these excersises probably aren't for you), but they were known back in ancien asian culture by buddhist nuns (best title i can come up with in english) as "slaying the red dragon". In this set of excersises and energetic meditations, menstrual blood is thought of as energy, so losing it each month is losing energy/youth/vitality.

There is a lot of infromation on that, but you'd have the buy the books or find a teacher/instructor/class near you.

The book is called Cultivating Female Sexual Energy and it's written by Mantak Chia and Maneehwan Chia (a husband and wife who both practice this). The book includes full details on the whole process and some recipies at the end. You can get it at some book stores, or look for it online. i think their website is www.healing-tao.com

Wow..sounds like a very good book. Thank you Lucidia.

And you're welcome Xois. As for the internal sonogram thing...I can't remember whether I had one or not. I had an ovarian cyst, and had some sort of internal exam..either that or an ultrasound. They inserted a long phallic like shaft inside, with a lubricated condom, plus extra lubrication. The end of it was able to turn and move a little..to view differen't areas. It was only painful when the stupid technician jabbed my affected ovary with it. But other than that..it was just a little embarrassing, or uncomfortable (and the room was cold). But it's nothing to be too frightened of, if it's the same thing I got.

Good luck, on finding out what is keeping your cycle so irregular. Have you thought of doing some magickal or meditative practices to bring it on???

I'm really into the Mind/Spirit/Body concept. I have a book by Louise Hay, called.."You can heal your life". In it, she talks about spiritual or emotional links to our every day illnesses. She even has a section which lists diseases/disorders/illnesses and their "emotional" cause. Her comment on problems with menstruation, are these "a subconcious rejection of ones' femininity. Guilt, Fear, Belief that the genitals are sinful or dirty".

She gives an inspirational daily affirmation to use for this problem..."I accept my full power as a woman , and accept all of my bodily processes as normal and natural. I love and approve of myself".

Good luck Xois. Let me know how the exam turns out!

Dear Raevyn...

When I asked her the name of it..she looked at me funny..and said.."Portuguese Wine"..all I know, is that it's a red wine...but not a very deep red. It is imported from portugal..and you can only buy this specific type in a portuguese liquor store. Good luck. LOL. I had trouble finding it too. Something tells me that it was a homemade recipe. If I ever find it again..I'll let you know. Sowwy.

I also read about the parsley tea helping to start em up. I plan to get some and give it a try. It has been six years for me...since my sons birth and only three or four periods. I do have a doc appointment with a new doc as the old one wasn't in the least concerned. Hoping it isn't an early menopause cause we really want another monster...er child........before Trey graduates from college!!

I was fearing that I was going through early menopause, as well. But I checked into it. Some of the symptoms of early menopause, is a decrease in sexual drive, hot/cold flashes, extreme moodiness, yes..missed periods, changes in hair growth, brittle bones. Do you have any of these other symptoms?

I would reccomend trying some natural estrogen supplements/enhancers. Evening primrose, Soy (lots of soy)...and others. I forgot which other herbs were reccomended to me. But..anyway..that trouble passed. I'm now getting my periods again...albeit the schedule is a little funky.

I was really HOPING I was, had some very peculiar patterns this last year, but recently had a hormone test and they're normal.
Damn, looks like i'll have to wait a bit longer!

BTW, I've been a bit irregular since my 20's, because of polycystic ovaries. It's quite a common cause of missing a period and can be treated but not usually completely cured. It can make conceiving a bit more difficult than normal, but not impossible.
There are sometimes other symptons too, like weight gain, excessive body hair, depression, although not everyone gets them. If you've been missing, it might be worth checking it out.
