MURFREESBORO — A man and a woman were arrested after holding a friend hostage for three days and carving a symbol into his chest, police said.
Reginald Phillips Jr., 19, and Marilyn Powers, 18, both of 313 Jackson St., Apt. A., were charged Wednesday with aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.
Joel Davis, a Murfreesboro police detective, said the two are accused of holding the 20-year-old man hostage Feb. 7-9 at their apartment and carved a symbol into his chest.
The couple remained last night in the Rutherford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond each.
Davis said a 17-year-old boy who admitted to participating in the incident had not been charged last night.
The man, whom police would not identify, told police he met the couple at the Middle Tennessee State University library. There, the three, who are not students, were playing and participating in Internet chat rooms.
The man told police the couple offered him a ride home but took him to their apartment instead.
''When they got inside, they locked the front door and back door and he couldn't get out,'' Davis said.
The victim told police that Phillips ''threw him on the floor'' and while the 17-year-old held his legs, Powers burned cigarettes between the victim's fingers.
Davis said Powers denies she burned the victim but told police she held his shoulders down while Phillips drew a symbol of a pyramid and a circular object representing the sun and its rays on the man's chest, then carved it into his flesh with a kitchen knife.
''Phillips admitted to doing that, but he said the victim wanted this done,'' Davis said. ''Miss Powers admitted she witnessed it and that she held his shoulders down while the carving took place.''
Phillips told investigators he designed the symbol and that it was part of his religion, Wicca or witchcraft.
The man was released after three days when Phillips' grandmother came to visit, Davis said.
