MURFREESBORO — A man and a woman were arrested after holding a friend hostage for three days and carving a symbol into his chest, police said.

Reginald Phillips Jr., 19, and Marilyn Powers, 18, both of 313 Jackson St., Apt. A., were charged Wednesday with aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping.

Joel Davis, a Murfreesboro police detective, said the two are accused of holding the 20-year-old man hostage Feb. 7-9 at their apartment and carved a symbol into his chest.

The couple remained last night in the Rutherford County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond each.

Davis said a 17-year-old boy who admitted to participating in the incident had not been charged last night.

The man, whom police would not identify, told police he met the couple at the Middle Tennessee State University library. There, the three, who are not students, were playing and participating in Internet chat rooms.

The man told police the couple offered him a ride home but took him to their apartment instead.

''When they got inside, they locked the front door and back door and he couldn't get out,'' Davis said.

The victim told police that Phillips ''threw him on the floor'' and while the 17-year-old held his legs, Powers burned cigarettes between the victim's fingers.

Davis said Powers denies she burned the victim but told police she held his shoulders down while Phillips drew a symbol of a pyramid and a circular object representing the sun and its rays on the man's chest, then carved it into his flesh with a kitchen knife.

''Phillips admitted to doing that, but he said the victim wanted this done,'' Davis said. ''Miss Powers admitted she witnessed it and that she held his shoulders down while the carving took place.''

Phillips told investigators he designed the symbol and that it was part of his religion, Wicca or witchcraft.

The man was released after three days when Phillips' grandmother came to visit, Davis said.

Newspaper articles normally annoy me anyway because they never give enough information.

Articles like this one make me ask so many questions: Who was this twisted loser, and his two lackeys? What does he think "Wicca or witchcraft" are? Was he just saying this to try and get the police to think he is crazy? Did he have some vendeta against this man he attacked and decided to strike out with a sociopathic method? Was he planning all along to try and use some insanity defence and he thought Wicca was a good scapegoat to use?

**GRRRRRROWLLLL**

Stuff like this makes my muscles tense and my brain throb, and not just because he claimed to be Wiccan or a witch. Using any belief system as a reason to do anything (carve symbols into people's chests, wage so-called holy wars, hold 300 year grudges, etc) makes me ill.

grrrrrrr...

What makes me sooooo mad is the fact that no matter what good we do in the name of Paganism/Wicca, there is never anything mentioned about that ....

but some wacko does this and makes the news...

then someone else will copy it and think its cool... and it will become a big fad and then theyll make a movie.. a t.v. mini-series...

*sigh*

its just stupid.....

It's not US. It's not even the poor bastard that did this. It is, in fact, the media. Any time they get their hands on a good "Witch" story, they tend to blow it out of proportion. Take the 15 year old that disappeared on Friday - they blame that on The Craft.

As a Pagan/Wiccan, I know that what I do can come back on me three-fold. I would like to - JUST ONCE - see "An it harm none, do as thou wilt" on the cover of Newsweek.

We had a few incidents here of persons unknown tipping over gravestones and generally causing acts of vandalism in a local cemetery. The media was very quick to report that a police detective felt it was likely a Wiccan group that was responsible, and go on to relate how Wiccans were satanic in origin! They managed to catch the two responsible a youth and an older guy, and big surprise here, they weren't Wiccan Just idiots! I really wanted to get in touch with the police expert and remind him of his theory! :D Hee, Hee.

yes rantraven, colour me quite surprised, back in my time in the corps nobody even knew we existed (mid to late 50s, just post korean war) i'm very surprised that the military got it just about completely right too for a change. right enough that i'd consider using this as an "independent reference" for anyone asking "what are you people?" while also sending them to sites such as ashlynn's grove and, once i know them a bit, here for first hand information. (one of the reasons i like ashlynn's grove is her list of warnings about "cults" on her home page, there are all too many charlatans out there loking to mislead seekers for their own ends. as witness "david koresh" and his unfortunate followers caught between two power trippers) thanks for the link, i've bookmarked it and will use it. blessed be.
