View Full Version : Even More School Problems (Yay)

Hey, if you thought the Alice Cooper and constant bullying incidents were outrageous, here's a real treat for you.
If I were to sum it up into one sentence, it would be this: I may actually be suspended over a pair of quotation marks.
Now, of course, I know you want to know more, so here I go.
As teenager as this sounds, my English teacher has had it in for me the entire semester. I honestly don't know why. Even though she's giving me trouble (a whole nother story), I'm still very polite and nice to her. As some quick background information, our school (if you've seen FL's thread), doesn't teach us squat. They just don't care. Also, I've been diagnosed with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and are always a tad "out of it" and need a few "exceptions" when it comes to work. However, neither the teacher nor the school will actually acknowledge it, so, I got the superintendent, my doctor, and some head of child-sickness-thingy on their butts (another story all in itself).
SO, if you also remember, I had a persuassive due. I ended up deciding on dragon existence. I worked on it very hard and on one part I wanted to include actual dragon sightings. I found a site with a bunch listed and figured it would save me some time (it was the last day and I wanted to sleep) if I just quoted certain sightings I wanted. However, I forgot to put in quotation marks.
In short, I was given the essay back today and astonished that I had a 140/400. (I got points only for my work cited and brainstorming paper, etc., but not my actually essay.) I approached my teacher asking why this was, and she said I plagerized. We then had a discussion. I told her I forgot the quotes, she told me there should be more than that. I asked what, she said I should know from ninth grade. I told her I couldn't remember anything from then since they didn't do a very good job teaching, she said I should know from ninth grade. I asked her how she expected me to know then, and she said I should know from the ninth grade (grrrr). She said I was far too "intelligent" to steal other people's work, and I then pointed out that I had the URL from the dragon sightings on my works cited, and if I was so intelligent, why would I do something so dumb?
It went on and on. Bottom line: even though I've never had a detention in my life and are very well mannered at the school, I am being written up and will have the school decide whether or not I will be suspended. Beautiful.
As a note, I have been working with another teacher (community service) with catching plagerism in papers. I've caught quite a few that even the other teachers didn't catch. Now I ask you, if I were plagerizing, why would I be so blatant about it? I mean, if I really wanted to plagarize, I'd get away with it.
As another note, it would be helpful to me if you answered the poll on your views. Please be honest. I may need it for a point on my side (if it looks beneficial).

My dear..... I cannot believe you did tis purposefully.... have one of your parents go to the school, and they should be known there, no? And ave them explain all these things... You are probably a talk around there because of your religion.... but not sure, and if you could make it stick, sue the hell out of them... and buy VB a better car... Oh, I just mean, the moment my children start to have a problem like this... I am ALL OVER THE SCHOOL.. and not really nice or tactful, that way, they are happy to have my child there, rather than I..PM me if I can do anythig short of flying back to PA

Have you explained that you are only a chicken???
:) Thank you for making me smile.
But, my mom is terribly mad (at them, not me) and is on my side along with a NJ principal, our district's superintendent, my doctor, hopefully my community service teacher (haven't gotten in touch yet, but I know he'll back me up), and some head of child-sickness-thingy.
Now, don't get me wrong, I can understand why she would think I plagarized since she doesn't really know a thing about me, but come one, this is very harsh.

Was what I did really that bad? I thought quoting things actually made a paper "better". (Hey look...quotes...) I don't know who I'm more mad at, the teacher or me. If I had just remembered to put in those stupid quotes...

I do not think you should be suspended. And if there is anyone in the chain of command at that school with any common sense at all, you won't be. Just make sure they know of the work you are doing finding other peoples' plagiarism. That should be a significant help.

Well, quotation marks are important... but, since you help the school in that way... you know...It is ok to quote..but not to quote and say you are the author, which is what they took it as..again, I think you are a marked chicken

Does that mean I'm doomed? :bug:
Actually, it's the middle school I've been helping, not the high school. However, they're literally right next to each other. It should still stand for something, right?
And yes, forgetting the quotes was the stupidest thing in the world. I really despise myself for it.

Everyone makes mistakes. Don't beat yourself up for this. Yes you should get a lower grade for the error however the entire paper can't be considered plagerism if you only forgot the quotes on the sitings. The fact that you had the URL there should show that it was mearly an error. The fact that you suffer form CFS should help you as well. When we are fatigued we are far more likely to make simple mistakes.

I think you should have points taken off of your essay for making a mistake, but I don't think you should be suspended. It was obviouslly an honest mistake if you listed the website it came from.
I just signed up for the board today, so I don't know anything about you except what you have wrote in this post, but I get a feeling that are discriminating you.
Have they said anything about not liking your relgion, practice, style of music, aor anything similar to that?

It is obvious from your teacher's constant childish reply of 'ninth grade' that she had no intention of discussing your grade with you and brushed you off. This is very shabby treatment.
Perhaps you aren't a typical student, you don't blend in well enough with the rest of the class. Maybe your teacher has other issues that could include prejudiced stereotypes.
There might be personal problems interfering with her ability to do her job.
Teachers are there to help you learn, not to criticize your memory or ignore your questions.
I hope you get a chance to do this assignment again, you deserve it.

If you cant talk to the teacher, go to the principal, tell him/her whats ging on and what happened and ask for the paper to be re-evaluated by another teacher. Tell him/her about your problems and ask for a re-sit.

You teacher is the one who needs to be suspended for her childish actions and tone with you. She, after all, is the adult. And its her job to point out to you where you made you mistakes, not sit there and pull an immature stunt of making slight comments like you are omnipotant and should emmidiatly recognize the mistake. *slaps snobby teacher*
You, my darling chicken, should not be suspended for this, you should be given a chance to correct the boo-boo...which is after all what it is. You didnt do this on purpose.
Quite honestly, I think if a school student was hell bent on plagerizing their paper, they would have found a much better, more obscure way to do it, than simply forgetting the quoataion marks!
Sheesh! She sounds like needds a time-out!!

It went on and on.
Define that for me please? I went through some pretty similar stuff when I was in high school and I know what I used to mean when I said, "it went on and on". Usually that I lost my temper. Not saying thats what you did, but is it? You were level headed the whole time? You have to be with teachers any inch you give them can easily be turned into a mile in a post columbine zero tolerance world.

Klucky! I voted other... you need to find a NEW SCHOOL. Or home school, or something!
Unless you really want to stay at that school...
If you want to stay, I'd suggest presenting your evidence (basically what you told us) to the principal, or whoever is in charge of the suspending. That should be enough to help convince them that you didn't do that...
THEN I'd suggest finding a different school. GEEZ!
Also, I know what it feels like to be blamed for plaugerism (too lazy to make sure I spelled that right). I wrote a short story in an English class and got a very low grade on it and the teacher came to me and said something to the effect of "I know you plaugerised that, that's why I gave you a low score. I knew you did because it wasn't your writing style."
I'm SOOORRRY, but I didn't know that plaugerism was another word for USING THE DAMN THESAURUS!!
Grr... I'm so mad now! If there's ANYTHING at all that I can do to help, just let me know. I DEMAND JUSTICE!

I agree with everyone on here. Get your parents and anyone you can get on your side to bug the crap out of the school. Get on this teacher's case. Speak to your principal. Ask if you can get a second opinion on your paper and if (s)he or another teacher would mind reading over your paper -keeping in mind that the quotation marks were left out in error.
Try to get as many people as you can to vouch for your character and that you'd never do such a thing. I'm sure there are plenty of us at MW who'd be happy to email you a letter that you can present to your principal & teachers.
MAKE IT A BIG DEAL
You do not deserve such treatment over a few quotation marks. Especially if they're aware of your needs.

Let me know what I can do to help.

I don't think you should be. If its your first time being in trouble... I can't see that they would have reason to suspend you. The way things worked when I was in school is that the teachers were there to CATCH things like that, and make us correct it. Don't know if that's 'cause it was a small town or what, but they made you just write another paper, different topic, or something similar in cases where this happened.

Sorry hon, that's a bummer. I hope they don't do it!!!

This situation sounds soooo awful. Your teacher seems to be the b-witch. That really really sucks. I don't think you should be suspended. You forgot to add quotation marks but cited the sources for your quotes. First of all, no one intelligent would put the source in their paper! Second of all, you admitted quite freely that it wasn't your work and wished to change it. Also, the entire paper, I'm assuming, wasn't taken from quotes. It was probably mostly your writing.
Will you have a chance to talk to the board/higher ups about your side of this and the related issues? I desperately hope so.
It's so funny that I read this right after screwing myself in a school project. I was editing tape from a play we had to write and video tape in Creative Writing when my tape just randomly deleted half my material. Now I have half a play and no way to fix it. Thank the Gods, I'm getting a 99% in that class and the teacher adores me!
But, enough blabbing by me, hope things work out for you!

April 14th, 2004, 02:55 AM
Klucky, I personally can't believe that the school would even CONSIDER suspending you over something so minor! Sounds to me like that teacher needs to quit teaching and become a prosecuting attorney or something like that instead so she can put her bitchy attitude to better use!

Some teachers should get another line of work.
Klucky, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you went to the same high school my daughter did. We dealt with the same kind of BS you've talked about, and it never stopped, no matter what she did or what I did. When her senior English "teacher" repeatedly called the class brain dead, believe me, I was all over that school. But to no avail.
I really wish I could tell you something more encouraging, but the reality is that if school personnel are incompetent or cruel, there's not much you can do that works to change the situation. That's been my experience, anyway. But don't get me started!
How close are you to graduation? Could you change schools? How about home school?
Good luck, hun, you deserve better than all this.

Gees, your school is strict!!!!
For a start, whenever we had essays or such to complete in our school, nearly everyone would ue the internet for information - and ALOT would come from what other people have wrote. Our teachers did not mind, and we were incouraged to do it that way, as long as were learning along the way.
I do not think you should be suspended at all - that was really un called for!!! :hugz:

Simply adding quotes does not and should not make or break an essay. Yeah, OK, a few points off for omitting the quotation marks but not suspension which will go on your record. I agree, the comments this 'teacher' made about the 9th grade are unreasonable and unprofessional.

Yes, I would have absolutely no problem with being able to redo it with the exchange of dropping an entire letter grade. I find that fair. Along with putting in the URL, I also didn't touch the supposed-to-be quoted stuff. The quoted things had terrible grammar and spelling errors and a style very unlike mine. Now come on, if I were trying to say that work was my own, wouldn't I fix it up even a little bit?
Can't you just say you're sorry and made a mistake, as humans do, and fix/rewrite the paper!?
That's all my side of the battle wants. However, the school doesn't see us children as humans. We're supposed to be perfect.
I just signed up for the board today, so I don't know anything about you except what you have wrote in this post, but I get a feeling that are discriminating you.
Have they said anything about not liking your relgion, practice, style of music, aor anything similar to that?
First, hi! :) Second, I have never heard any remarks (from teachers) about my religion. However, the school has a scary amount of gossipers (like every school does), so they most likely know.
Perhaps you aren't a typical student, you don't blend in well enough with the rest of the class. Maybe your teacher has other issues that could include prejudiced stereotypes.
There might be personal problems interfering with her ability to do her job.
Oh, I most certainly don't blend in. I'm one of those more "goth"-looking people. However, I try to be kind as hell to everybody (even the people who don't deserve it), but yes, stereotypes still seem to block people's minds. As for any personal problems she may have, I've heard a few (again, gossip), but if she's not fit to teach, then she shouldn't be teaching at all. I know that sounds sort of mean, but I find it would work out best for everybody that way.
If you cant talk to the teacher, go to the principal, tell him/her whats ging on and what happened and ask for the paper to be re-evaluated by another teacher. Tell him/her about your problems and ask for a re-sit.
I'm not sure if the principal has been involved yet, however, the assistant principal is trying to ignore everything (including my mom's calls and such). So, if she's not involved yet, she sure as heck will be!
No, I don't think I've ever lost my temper in front of a teacher. Of course, I'd always scream about it to my friends after school/in another class, but never at a teacher. Yes, the entire time I was level-headed. I even said a few times, "Yes, I understand why you would think this was plagerism, but then why would I have..." and then explain whatever point I wanted to show. It was a debate, but as polite a debate as possible. Was that part of my mistake? Should I have done something more?
Klucky! I voted other... you need to find a NEW SCHOOL. Or home school, or something!
Unless you really want to stay at that school...
My mom and I have been looking at an online school for a good while now. Neither her nor I want me to stay in that poor excuse of an educational standard any longer. The students are rude, the teachers don't care, and the higher authorities ignore you.
MAKE IT A BIG DEAL
Oh...we are...;) :muwaha:

Not yet, but there's going to be a meeting on Friday including me, my mom (who has to take the day off), my NJ principal friend (who also has to take the day off), the assistant principal of the school, and the English teacher. I think your school has a case of overreactitis. Has any taked about changing your education program? Anything from changing English teachers to going to another school... possibly even home schooling? Sounds like a pretty good option considering that they want to suspend you anyways.
I know how you feel about the school not teaching you anything bit. When I got to that point I just ignored whatever negitive or useless crap they tried to stuff down my throat and relied on myself to learn, which it sounds like you're doing now. :) If you're teacher can't teach, don't give them the benifit of thinking that they are doing anything for you. Just do the work and smile.
I had a math teacher who was like that it 9th grade. She was the most evil grinch(and yes, she looked like the grinch) in the school. That was the only year that I didn't get an A in math. She hated me so much she refused to take my homework and wouldn't advance me to the next book in 10th grade, even though I got A's on all the tests, including finals. I started 10th grade repeating the book, and was so friggin board that I made it a habit of falling asleep in class. The teacher would wake me up, ask me what the answer to the question on the board was, I'd answer it right and go back to sleep. After a few weeks of that she stopped waking me up. Come the end of the 1st quarter, I had an A+ in the class and asked her to be moved up because I was board out of my mind... she sent me straight to the office to have it put through.
Problem was, I got so use to sleeping during math class that I spent the next 3 years doing it . The only time I stayed awake was to take a test. I still got A's so that teacher didn't bother waking me up either.
Point of this whole thing is, you just have her for this year... which is almost over. As long as you keep learning, and keep working with the school higher-ups, things will turn out fine. hang in there hon. :hugz:

I would be too. Don't they have anything more important to worry about? I mean, real troublesome kids to suspend over something more major than a couple of missed quote marks???

Yeesh! Something is seriously wrong with that teacher! I have seen some pretty bad teachers, but none of them ever refused to explain something to a student because they thought they should know it already! (I did have a math teacher told me my disagreement with him on the answer to a problem was a "personal opinion" once.:hehehehe: )
When I was in High School they always used to tell us that if we didn't like something we should all complain to our parents and have them write letters because parents have power.
That's how we got the school to re-open the bathrooms.(They closed down all but one for each gender after some students were caught having sex in one of them, and the school had 2000 students!)

Never mess with the Kluckster.
After an agonizing two hours and forty-five minutes of talk and debate, a 504 for my CFS was put into progress, and the idea of me being either suspended or written up for "plagerism" is done for. Now the only problem is the essay grade itself. It is only the teacher's decision to let me either redo the essay or just dock a few points from me. So, that part specifically isn't looking too good, but at least nothing exceedingly bad is going to happen. Plus, she just got a kidney stone the other day. I know this sounds mean, but HAHA!
The meeting consisted of the assistant principal, my mom, me, the NJ principal friend, the head-of-child-help-thingy, the principal, the guidance counselor, and all four of my teachers. Basically, almost everybody was on my side and saying, "She is an absolute gem. I could never see her taking somebody else's work and calling it her own."
So, there it is.
Thanks to everybody who gave me support! :hugz: I know it's not over, but it's looking better. :)

I'm glad you didn't get suspended. Especially over something as silly as a couple of quotation marks.

Okay, now today was weird. My teacher called me up today, handed me my persuassive, and told me I have until Tuesday to rewrite the "plagarized" part.

Did she tell you exactly what you did wrong this time? If not you should make her tell you so she won't have anything to complain about when you hand it in.

Klucky, what grade are you in?
I got it in for you, but let me explain why. I assume this is highschool, and though while the grade was bad, I imagine you will remember to double check, neh? and, likely in high school, opportunities present themselves to allow a makeup or extra credit.
But, better there, than you make that simple mistake in college. Fresh Comp I, the big lecture. dont plagerize(sp? omg heheh) . period. not on purpose. not on accident. not on monday, not in a boat, not with a goat. Zero tolerance, with punishment ranging from automatic failure of course, to expulsion from the school.

Yeah, that was another one of our arguments. (Isn't high school supposed to PREPARE you for college?)

I don't know what it's like other places, but at my college they give everyone mini lessons and tests to make sure we know exactly what plagerizism is so no one has any excuse, and if anyone had any questions about it I couldn't see any teachers refusing to answer.
Maybe not all colleges will do this, but a High School certainly should. After all, (as said above) High school is supposed to prepare you for college.

hehe, not most state funded four year colleges I know. They assume you know about it, and give a general recap with the dire warning. "dont say words that arent yours, as if they are." Kinda vague, and enough to make you paranoid in your writing if you are diverse in your reading..... (did I read that somewhere? :blushake: )

I can see that. I go to a community college, but that is still a step above High School, and in my High School we weren't really taught how to avoid plagerism at all. We were told not to steal other people's work or buy papers off the internet, but that was about it.

I'm going to a CC also. Actually taking WR123, research paper writing... can we say emphasis on don't plagarize!!!??? Ifn' you want... you can PM me a copy of the paper and I might be able to give you a few pointers on avoiding and making sure that it doesnt' happen again.... :) besides reading it over carefully.... lol

yep, just cause you have a works cited page with it on it, does not mean you cant plagerize from the same source. In most papers I write, I have to use the "quotes" then parenthesis with page number and source.

You don't necessarily have to quote the source directly. Now if you quoted them word for word and didn't put quotation marks, I can see the mistake there, but if it was just summing up information from your sources and you have an appendix with printouts of your research, you can't get into that much trouble for it. If you didn't... that's a whole thing apart.
