I'm going to make a little rune to protect my friend on his trip up to Canada...and I want to sprinkle some kind of spice/herb on it to get me fully tapped in to what im doing...but the thing is...all i have is house cooking spices..alot of them but nothing fancy...what do you reccommend?

for protection:
basil, caraway, cinnamon, cumin, curry, dill, fennel, garlic, ginseng, mint, nettle, parsley, pepper, rosemary, sage are all good kitchen spices.

I'd personally recommend a blend of basil, rosemary, and sage. It's aromatic and very magically potent. Blend that in with some salt (kosher/pretzel salt is my favorite, but any, from rock to iodized, is fine) to absorb negativity and enhance the purity of the charm.

Cinnamon, cumin, curry, garlic poweder, and pepper also make a good blend, but it's much more firey. (And if you have any allergies, it'll really get to you.) The green blend I mentioned first seemed to be a much better match for a rune spell.

I didnt have any rosemary :( but I mixed a bunch of the spices Isil gave me and made a really nice smelling pouch for my friend...now as long as he doesn't have the urge to open it, this will be all good.

hehehhe... if he opens it it'll go POOF! and scatter everywhere :) at least that's what all my herbal sachets do... explode upon contact!

What do you put in them to make them explode? <ducks under his desk>

Nothing out of the ordinary... really... *hides jar of gunpowder behind her back* those black flecks? No... no, that's just ground peppercorns... I swear!

Bay leaves, also, I believe :)
You can even write your intent upon them and then crumble them over the rune :)

I find that rosemary, basil and sage work well....add a pich of garlic and you can smell like a sausage. ;)....And never forget good old fashion salt and black pepper.

Comfrey is specifically good for protection while travelling. (Sources: Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, by Scott Cunningham; A Compendium of Herbal Magick, by Paul Beyerl; Herb Craft, by Susan Lavender and Anna Franklin.)
