Well the tree guys are out this morning taking down our Ash tree :( It was once a beautiful tree, one of the reasons I bought this house. Just sad to see a once proud tree reduced to a pile of wood chips. :( It had to be taken down though, it died last year due to that Ash disease going around lower Michigan.

I know what you mean in my town there was a very largh tree which had been there for a long time probably before the town, It stood sooo tall! and I was driving down the street and couldnt figuer out what was missing... It was the tree and I was so furious they cut it down to make all of this new space for developement! I was sure the tree was part of a land mark at this site for the vets but they agreed to let it be cut down!

Oh, I am so sorry. :huddle:
I love trees, and get very attached to them and would die if anything happened to mine.

I was hoping that I'd see a bud, just one bud on any of the branches they have taken down so far and I'd tell them to stop, but there hasn't been one. :( That Ash disease is nasty. I've seen about 15 dead trees just on the mile drive to my daughters school all due to this disease. It's pretty scary it could wipe out the Ash population like this.
I will plant a new tree back there this year. I was thinking perhaps a red maple would be good. They are relatively fast growers and good shade trees.

maybe you could bury a piece of the dead ash at its foot, as a tribute :)

When we built our house, I planted a rain tree in the back yard. It grew so fast and I just loved that tree. I'd get so excited every spring watching it bud and grow practically a foot every 2 weeks. Last year, we put in a pool....and my precious rain tree had to be taken down. I was heartbroken. I tried to get the pool contractors to try to save it and relocate it, but they said its roots were too spread out. I cried the day they took it down and chopped it up. I felt I had failed it...betrayed it somehow. Seeing this thread has reminded me of my lovely tree.
I planted another in the front yard, and its growing beautifully, but can't replace what I lost :(

I would under normal circumstances but it best if most if not all the contaminated surface wood be removed :( The disease it got is very nasty... A lot of it's bark fell off, you can read about the disease here (http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2002/020128.htm) . If it isn't that emerald ash borer its this disease :( I hope they find a way to stop both. Both they believe were introduced recently... the borer is from Asia and the fungal disese they is not indiginous as well.
