We're considering going on a road trip to yellowstone for may long weekend. Would you say that its worth the (very) long drive (we're talking 12 hours) with a six month old?

Hey AR,
We went last May. It's very cool, but very big. If you're only going for the long weekend, you might want to just see the north end, and avoid trying to bust your butts getting down to Old Faithful. The stuff in the North end is pretty cool anyway :)
There are bison everywhere. At one point, we had to stop driving, because this big ol' bison was walking right up the middle of the highway! He walked right by us, looked in the window, and kept going. So neat - but scary too...they are BIG animals!

I haven't been there in ages. What kinds of things do you plan on doing. The entire area is breathtaking.
There are moose too. We had to slow down for a young moose crossing the road the last time we went there.

Uh, not with a little one..perhaps.. Well, if the child is a happy sort.. I was there when I was 7... and someone hit a bear with a car. We awoke to gunshots.. they had to end his pain.. But, it was nice. The stinky part was odd though.

Quintin is definately the happy sort :) He ususally just sleeps in the car and only gets upset when he gets hungry. We'd be stopping pretty often anyway. It may just be too big of a drive for the long weekend though....

Is there something 6 hours away you want to see??? THAT way, if it gets rough, you could see idea #2..

Well I live right beside Yellowstone, hehe. *grin* I've been there many times. I personally think it's a nice place to visit and relax. There's Old Faithful, the scenery, the warm springs, etc. I haven't been there recently...I know it was getting to be a little more crowded than normal. But I'm not used to stuff like that, I live here. Hehe.
I'm sure you'll likeit if you go!

I loved seeing the animals the most... if you want to stay anywhere, I recommend Old Faithful Inn. It's the best place I've ever stayed at. :D

I have taking my kids since birth on long trips, short trips, and to here and there.
I say my kids are portable kids. It can be rough but if you make the best out of the bumps it can all be great.
We have a place on an island with no electric, no running water, no modern anything. We have a one room shelter that we built and a fire pit. Thats it.
Boat access only.
We haul the kids, the dogs, the chickens and water and food and everything under the sun. Totally primative out there and we have been taking the kids since babyhood.
Its hard, its fun and we love it!!!

It is gorgeous and amazing! The strangest place I've been. But, I say go when the kid's at least five and stay a week! :) Or go more than once...
Blessed be and Namaste!

OH, I envy you! I've always wanted to see Yellowstone! I just hope that the volcano doesn't blow before I get there......Scientists say that it'll still be some time before that happens, but with my luck, I'm not counting on it.

Awwww shucks. But it still sounds like a lovely place to go.
Oohh are you going to take pics? For all us Aussies that will never get that far? Hmmm maybe that's asking to much :bigredblu
I hope you and your family have a wonderful time.

It is definitly worth it. A good friend worked there last summer and had some of the best stories. As far as taking the baby, I think you should put it off a while till he/she is a little older. That way, he/she can really enjoy it. Toddlers tend to have a ball there, because they can't get enough of the outside anyways. But either way, have fun I know you will.

Grief..it's been ages since we did the big family vacation..but I'd say go! Enjoy! It's incredibly beautiful, and if you're lucky you get to see some amazing wildlife (or at least the idiot vacationers chasing after the animals with their cameras!). Actually, as long as you make sure to have plenty of diapers, your average 6 month old is a lot easier to travel with than your average 6 year old..(done both, and will take the baby anyday!)

I went to Yellowstone as a child and was enthralled by what it had to offer. Please take the time to go if you have the opportunity! :colorful:
