I like to take walks at night, and the past few weeks, i've noticed an abnormally bright, amber colored star (which, I'm having to conclude, is a planet), Almost Due South...anyone know which planet it is? We think it's Mars.

Mars it is. Mars is at its closest point in orbit to earth in the past 13 or so years.

Hey Ep, wasn't Mars here like a year ago or somethin? Or was that Jupiter?:)

That was Jupiter. The little red planet that is really bright in the Southern sky this year is Mars.

It was brighter and lower in the sky a while back. Its very interesting to look at.

*Sigh* Maybe next year I'll be able to get that beginner's telescope I've always wanted. :D
