While I have a 56K modem, I usually connect only at 24.4 ~ on a good day. Now, very occasionally I can connect at 28.8 ~ but I think that's a fluke in the wiring. LOL! :D

I use the university ethernet system.
I don't know what speed it is but I think it is pretty fast
because it doesn't really get interference from heavy
line use.

I come on while I'm at work and we have a permanent huge pipex connection to the web, I'm *always* online - no modem.
But, when I get home, I'm on a standard 56k modem.

Any help?

I'm on cable at home and at T1 at work! When I go to use a computer with a 56K or less, I get frustrated. It drives me nuts that some aspect(s) of my life are controlled by the computer! Argh!

If anyone is connected at work, chances are you have at least an ISDN connection or a shared T1. Universities tend to have at least a T1.

I just have to agree with two things.
#1 - Yay for cable!
and #2 - yay for geek-dom!

My home connection's a 56k, but since I rarely am here while I'm at home, but I'm here at work, I put in T1, which is what the shop runs off. :)

Oy!!! I live in the internet VOID I swear!!!

Well, ok, so it's not THAT bad, I have internet...

I have 56K modem, and a dial-up connection = but with how crappy the phone lines are around here, I'm lucky to get on at 24K sometimes... I average about a 26K connection speed.

Question:

I have a 56k modem, but it runs at either 24,000 or 26,400.

I know that there are two pair of twisted wires in the phone line. If the phone company has only hooked up one pair, would that limit speeds. Do all 4 wires have to hooked up to get 56k?

My poor old computer is a $50 garage sale find.......only a Pentium 1. I normally connect at 24,000 or 26,400. :o:  Hey, I'm just happy to HAVE a computer that will let me have my AOL. I've just learned not to expect much out of it and be happy it works at all. My sound card is fried so all my cool wavs I have I can't even here....lol. sigh One day..........:bubbles: :cutie:

my modem is a 56K -- but my connection is normally 50,666 or 52,000.

unfortunately, it's an HSP modem (read "cheap-ass piece of winmodem crap"), and i've had to throttle the speed down to 46,666 in order to keep my connection from locking up. =(

i've been looking over some of these speeds: they are, quite frankly, WAY too low, some of them. give me a buzz and i'll see if i can help you tweak better performance out of them.

no: only two wires need to be hooked up. the second pair is for... i dunno. but i only hooked up two wires on mine, as well (yes, i wire my own jacks, lol!)

if there was a functional problem with the phone line, you'd be experiencing frequent disconnects, problems initiating a connection, and high rates of packet loss or data corruption.

your speed indicates that there is a problem with a) the drivers you're using; b) the protocols you're using; or c) the type of modem. if you have a Kflex modem and your ISP is using v90 protocols, then your connection speed would suck.

you might also want to check your modem's settings and make sure the maximum transmit speed isn't set to something silly like 4800 (generally the default).

feel free to drop me a line! =)

i don't get it: i live forty miles past Butt-^#$%, Nowhere and my connection speeds ROCK -- i've had to throttle my modem back because the CPU couldn't handle it with the image editing, webdesigning, television-watching, and downloading i tend to try doing simultaneously (with varying degrees of success)!

the phone lines here are the old copper ones originally installed 50 years ago.

we got digital routers four years ago.

we got touch-tone service three years ago.

they took out the party lines last year.

now, who's got lousy phone lines?

I got DSL and it is pretty nice, not as nice as a 100MBit line of my own would be (which we might get oneday), but it'll do for now ;)

At home I'm using a 56K modem that because of bad phone lines only connects at 26.4K.

At work I'm using a shared DSL line. As you can imagine, when shared with a million other people (okay, so that's an exaggeration, but sometimes it really feels that way) sometimes I wish I had a modem at work because it would be a drastic improvement in connection speed.

LOL Mystique--where the hell did you find this ancient ass post?

We've got all 4 computers on cable--both the desktops and both the laptops (though the laptops are on wireless network so they're a little slower than the desktops). I'm thinking I"m going to get another router and put my laptop on the same network as the desktops though...I"m spoiled, what can i say? I LIKE SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!
