another FYI for everyone...
"Agents of the federal government confiscated deeds to
our tribal property and desecrated our religious
items, using a warrant to confiscate allegedly illegal
guns as an excuse. During the 4 hour search, our
children were turned out into the cold on a
windy day in January with no shoes or their coats.
Jay Nixon -- The Attorney General of the State of
Missouri -- vowed a few years ago that no Indian Tribe
would ever own land in Missouri ! Though not yet
federally recognized, our tribe is nevertheless
covered by the Native American Religious Freedom Act,
so if you are a member of a federally recognized tribe
thinking that our rights have nothing to do with your
rights, please reconsider. If you expect to keep your
own religious rights, please remember that the act
that covers our rights covers yours also, and
protection of our rights is protection of yours.
Arriving here from Virginia in 1652, we are the only
tribe in Missouri or Arkansas to actually reside on
Ancestral lands, protecting over 300 burials and an
ancient village site, the location of which was kept
secret in our chief's family all during the time it
was illegal to live and travel in Missouri if you were
an Indian... even though our lands and travel were
guaranteed by the 1803 Treaty of the Louisiana
Purchase. Over 600 medicinal herbs grow on our 70 acre
property... the only such site in Missouri. Though no
excavations have been or ever will ever be allowed of
the burials here, many native artifacts have actually
been found laying on top of the ground here... mute
evidence of the attacks on our people between 1818 and
1821.
Even as late as the 1950s, our people were being
arrested for Stomp Dancing secretly in national forest
areas, so practice of our religion is nothing new to
us. To protect your religious rights and ours... sign
this petition!

Scott Anderson
