I was wondering if anyone could give me some general information on faeries... I am currently studying Wicca... and have heard of them.. but i have no clue what they are.. nor do i have any information about them..

I don't suggest dealing with them, personally. In short, from my own understanding, they are malevolent creatures in a pretty package.

Edited by moi for somehow typoing "malevolent". Aieee, the shame!

http://www.scottish-gatherings.50megs.com/page157.html

Also try googling Tuatha de Dannan and Sidhe

Wolf Wonderess is almost right. Some faeries are in fact malevolent and it's not recommended to contact them, however others are merely mischeivious, and still others like the Scottish Brownies are quite friendley and helpful.

Just as an aside, does anyone know of anywhere I can find information on faeries from other countries, specifically Australia? All I seem to be able to find is information on faeries from the UK. Unless faeries tagged along on the First Fleet from England...that would be something...

You might try reading or finding someone who can teach you about Aborigini folklore and mythology.

Um, just a scholarly note, but the research in at least the Sirona Knight book is terrible. I Literally chucked it in the trash.

Start with primary sources - read the old fairy tales again, not the Disney version. This is the folklore of recent memory.

If you can find it, get a copy of The Field Guide to the Little People by Nancy Arrowsmith. It's Out of Print, but you might luck out at a library or on eBay.

I like Froud - Try to find Faeries and Good Faeries/Bad Faeries. The Runes of Elfland is also cool.

The Great Encyclopedia of Faeries by Pierre DuBois is also good.

You also want to look at mythology - many of what we call fairies had their origins in gods, heroes, and major characters of myth. Every culture has a different fairy culture often grounded in earlier myths of that particular society.

And frankly, I think fairies did hitchhike with settlers. And the natives had their own. I'm writing a novel about it.

If you want to try working with them then call to them, let them know you want to play. They are not all malevolent beings. Dance, make a faery bower( a pretty corner of a garden or a room that you can dedicate to them.) Start to leave offerings. Milk or butter are good but anything you want to leave is just as good. I also believe that they hitchicked with the settlers. Why wouldn't they? They are highly curious creatures. Don't get me wrong, they can be very mischevious. I have a faery who likes to hide my things. I always find them when i don't want them but as soon as i do..... gone. lol.. also never say thank you to them. If you want to show your appreciation dnce, sing to them( not a manufactured by the music industry "song), draw all sorts. As long as your careful then you should not be worried about malevolent ones. And if you are then there are steps to banish them.:)

There is some good info there about Celtic type faeires and legends associated with them. Most of the info we have about faeries is from the Celtic lands, but they are common throughout the world.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/basque/bl/index.htm

There are some Basque faery-tales in the second link, that you might also be interested in.

And that deals with English faeries.

I have quite a bit of information on Italian faeries ...I have no idea where I got it, but here it is :

Faeries have always held an important position in folk lore. They were powerful, numerous and were a part of everyday life. There are several races of faery: sprites, elves, dwarfs, giants, trolls, changelings, and sirens.

The Italian word for fate is 'fada'; and the Italian word for faery is 'fata'. It is believed by some (myself included) that:

1. These faery were once demi-deities who controlled the fate of humankind;
2. That these faery are part of nature and inhabit objects and physical places.

The variedness of Italian linguistical forms is unimaginable for those who don't live in Italy. (I do not live in Italy nor have I been there, but rest assured there are hundred of dialects.) Some words were used both to mean 'Witches' and to indicate the quality of the 'Beings' made by Energy that Witches evoked. As with humans, there are good faery and not-so-good faery.

This by no means is a complete list.

AGUANE
This is a race of female spirits. They are the spirits of the mountains and hills, and the streams and rivers. They love to wear the color red and usually have a magic cap of red to provide invisibility. Their associated element is Water.
BASADONE
Known as the 'woman-kisser', he rides the noonday breezes and steals kisses as he passes by. Their associated element is Air.

CALLICANTZAROI
These are trooping faeries who are small, skinny and always nude. They are all partially or totally blind and spend their time trooping together. If you encounter the Callicantzaroi, identify yourself as a friend and offer them some pork, as this is their favorite food. Their associated element is Earth.

CANDELAS
The Candelas typically appear as a grouping of tiny flickering lights, almost like fire flies. They may be seen just after sundown. Their associated element is Earth.

FAUNI
These are the guardians of forests and fields. They are a wood spirit. When the Fauni mated with the Faunae, the Incubi were born. Their associated element is Earth.

FOLLETTI - FARFARELLI
The Folletti travel in the wind and can be seen at play, causing swirls in the dust. They are female. One of their favorite appearances is in the form of butterflies. They are usually friendly towards humans, but can be mischievous. Their associated element is Air.

FOLLETTO
The Folletto travel in the wind and can be seen at play, causing swirls in the dust. They are male; small and light and practically invisible, but their distinguishing feature is that their toes point backwards. They seem to pay no attention to humans, but can be mischievous and annoying. They change the weather merely for their own sport and not for any baneful purpose. Their associated element is Air.

GIANES
They are female, solitary wood elves who will occasionally aid humans. They are master cloth weavers, but weave for fun rather than for anyone's benefit. Divination is another one of their talents. Their usual method of divining to to scry into their moving spinning wheels. Their associated element is Earth.

INCUBI
The Incubi were originally herd sprites. Their associated element is Earth.

LAURU
This is a race of sprites. They are less than two feet tall, have black eyes and black curly hair. The Lauru are rarely seen during the day. Their associated element is Air.

LINCHETTO - BUFFARDELLO - CACCAVECCHIA - MAZAPEGOLO
They belong to the elven race, specifically night elves. They hate disorder and will not dwell where there is disorder. These elves are said to cause nightmares and odd noises in the night. Their associated element is Air.

MASSERIOL - MAGUT - MAZAPEGUL
They are always male, dress in red and have a booming laugh. He is plump but always impeccably dressed and groomed. They have been known to help out on farms as long as they don't have to get themselves dirty. In some legends they give a lot of gold to people (essentially woman) that like them. Their associated element is Earth.

MONACHETTO
These a gnome-like spirits associated with caves or tunnels. Their associated element is Earth.

MONACIELLO - MAMUCCA - PUNDACCIU
They are always male, dress in red and are always drunk, but not unfriendly. Their name, Monaciello, means 'little monk' which is how their hooded cloak-dress makes them appear. They inhabit and guard wine cellars. They have merry personalities and like to steal human clothing for sport. Their associated element is Earth.

ORCUILI
They are dwarves with a mean disposition. They are master shape-changers and smell horrible. When they are seen, they appear as bearded males. They dwell in caves. Contact is not advised. Their associated element is Air.

ORCHI
They are giants with a mean disposition. When they are seen, they appear as bearded males. They live on clouds and only descend to earth for food. Contact is not advised. Their associated element is Air.

PALOS
They are the elemental spirits of the North. They are very etheric and have influence over mental processes, creativity, thought and concept.

QUERCIOLA
They are spirits who are especially good friends to lovers. Their associated element is Fire.

SETTIANO
They have influence over inner motivation, the subconscious, and life fluids. Their associated element is Fire.

SILVANI - SALVANI
They appear as winged wood nymphs who have a very filmy appearnce, almost ghost-like. They are of no use to humans, but do not seek to harm us. Clothed in red, they wear animal furs. Their name, Silvani, means 'wooded' or 'woodland'. They love the color red and are attracted to anything of this color. The Silvani are the protectors of all animal wildlife. Their associated element is Air.

I don't mean to be nasty. I am ignorant! But what do faeries have to do with magic? I had never heard of their connection until I read it on this webpage. I am interested to hear all about it.

Mòrag Elasaid Ní Dhòmhnaill

Faeries are magical beings, blueangel. Many people work with them in their rituals and everyday magic.

However, you should keep in mind that not everyone here practices magic. I don't. Following a "neo-pagan" path (though I don't consider mine to be so) doesn't just mean magic and witchcraft. It can mean a whole host of things. I'm a Scottish Reconstructionist, which means I aim to follow pre-Christian Scottish beliefs and traditions as closely as possible. Historically the Good Folk or faeries were a very important part of everyday life amongst the Scottish peoples. If I were to leave out the faeries as a part of my practices and beliefs I would not be true to my path.

I'm afraid of faries. I hear that they can be very mean at times. I try not to call on them or attract them because I'm afraid to offend them in some way. I love to read about them because I find them fascinating I even bought the fairy pack by Claire Nahmad but at the same time they scare me. I left some honey for them just in case they were around but thats all I feel comfortable doing at this time.

indiasmoon63, you know what I think? The faeries latch on to fear. If they know you're afraid of them they'll walk al over you. I've seen this happen. If you're authorative, but respectful at the same time, they'll respect you back for your assertiveness and strength. Be firm but polite with them. It's all about mutual respect :).

You know Laurelie, your right. I'm not deathly afraid if them although they do scare a bit me but I keep hearing all these bad stories and I can't help it. But, In reality you are right I need to show no fear and just be kind. Can I ask them to leave if i suspect them to be around or would that be a bad choice? Anyway, I do find them interesting and I should make more of an effort to study them more to get a better understanding. Thanks.

If someone could suggest one book and one book only about faeries that would be nice because someone here said Sirona Knight's book wasnt too good and I hadnt known that when I bought it.

The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries by W.Y. Evans-Wentz. Hands down, I don't think there is a better book on the subject.

You can read it for free as an e-text here: The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries (http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/ffcc/index.htm).

Well, you could ask them to leave, but it might be a better idea to see what their intentions are before you do, they could be helpful. Just remember that they're inhabiting your house, and you have every right to ask them (politely) to leave.

Bad things will happen sometimes, but really it's like (metaphorically) hiring a cleaner. People will recount their experiences with ones who steal, but that doesn't mean that it will happen to you.

I have found that Good Faeries/bad faeries had a lot of information about all the type of faeries there are out there and how they interact with us. After reading the book I started noticing how they personally effect me in my day to day life. I suggest reading it, the artwork is amazing.

Faeries are not all bad....certain types can be very helpful here are a couple of sites to look at...

http://www.irishclans.com/articles/tuathadedannan.html

Also if you use the Yahoo.com search engine and type in "Types of Faeries" you will get about 38,000 hits for that search......
