View Full Version : Queasy question

Why is it that while I patch up a nasty cut I'm fine, but after, when I think about the blood, I start seeing spots and peoples voices start to go far way? I end up with my head between my knees trying not to faint.

I'm ok when I get blood work done. I'm fine seeing the needle and everything. But if I look at the vial after I get that swimming head feeling. My hubby got a nasty cut while practicing swordfighting with his teacher. The swords are blunt but he missed a parry and the sword tore off a chunk of skin down to the last layer of dermis. I was ok to clean, and do the patch up work but after I got, yet again, light headed.

I know there is no reason to freak out, and I can talk myself through situations but what the heck is wrong with me?! This is recent, maybe 2 years worth. I've never had this problem before and I've seen my share of serious injuries.

I can still help people now but I'm scared it will get worse. Any ideas?

Hmm....dont know for sure :( I personally could lay open my own leg and look at the blood and not get queasy, but it sounds like your mind has a tolerance level for blood. You can tolerate a little cut and the blood that comes from that but your mind keeps replaying it and it gets to a point where it makes you uneasy. Just a thought

No, little cuts are fine. It's the nasty, stepped-on-a-piece-of-glass type of thing that get me going.

:) I wonder if there *is* an answer to this.

Me, I'm fine with blood dribbling, with cuts and scrapes and whatever, but put it in a sterile environment and I go all woozy. I can't stand to look at needles going in, though as long as I can't see the blood moving, I'm fine. I went with my Grampa when he was on dialysis one time, and the tubes that the blood was run through were jumping with every heartbeat.. it was too much for me. And the last time I gave blood, I made the mistake of looking as they filled up the testing vials.. I saw that first gush into the empty tube and had to look away quick before things went badly.. :shaker:

I'm fine, and actually kind of intrigued by free flowing blood. I mess with my cuts to see how much they'll bleed and suck the blood out of them til they stop bleeding. Ok, yeah, I know. Most people stop this when they're still little kids!

But when I have blood taken, the blood splashing against aginst the back on the vacuum tube makes me want to vomit instantly.

So no help here, but kind of the same thing.

A lot of people are like this. I'm taking a First Aid course... apparently this is one of the first terms that people didn't drop (either the class or litterally) after seeing the gory videos.

As far as how to deal with it... I'm not sure... perhaps a fear of your own blood loss?

Maybe it's your adrenaline that keeps you from feeling like that initially. :colorful:

I dont understand why so many women get freaked out by blood..
we bleed every single month.. and dirty tampons arent the finest sight.. (sorry to all you guys out there..)..

personally - i have no problem with blood... sometimes real disguisting gory, guts flowing down, brains smeared on the wall type stuff can be yick... but i can handle it most of the time..

See that's another thing that I don't get, I'm also fine with menstrual blood so logically...... Blood is blood right? It just makes no sense to me. I keep trying to remember something that happened 2 years ago to see if something triggered it. I can't think of anything. One day I was fine and then another...

Not so. Menstrual blood has a different energy and feeling associated with it. It is part of being a woman and therefore an integral part of you. However when you cut yourself or loose blood because you are sick and need a blood test it is not something that is positive happening to your body. Perhaps you are responding to that. :colorful:

I hadn't thought of it that way before...

I will tel ya a secret........I have been a nurse for over 24 years. I have worked in the ER and OR at one time or another. I cannot stand to see the first inscion done to open someone up. I have to close my eys until the surgeon had done the first cut. Then I am fine. Something about the knife going in to uncut sin just freaks me out. Blod and stuff I am ok with. I give myself insuline injections every night. But oh my never ask me to witness surgery until after the first cut is made. I will pass out. You are not alone hun.

Heh...I'm A-OK when it comes to pain, myself. I'm even find seeing blood from a cut of mine. However, if that blood starts dribbling... For instance, once I cut my ankle shaving really bad (took off a huge deep chunk...still no idea how that happened, and it didn't even hurt to me). That in itself was fine. But then it started dribbling down my foot and pooling in the water--and I freaked. Mainly because the cut was also near a vein, and I have a HUGE vein phobia. Which is why I hate getting blood drawn. Not for the pain, but because of WHERE that vein is going. Argh!

So, yes. For me, blood in itself doesn't bother me. Unless it's a.) in a place where a vein is highly visible or b.) running or pooling out. Then I do get nauseous. ^^;;

So, yeah! I feel for ya!

i don't get sick at the sight of blood either i to think that it is rather neat. i go to weird website that have accident photos and things on thwm and am great for taking care of cuts and scrapes and things then picking the scabs to make them bleed again. i know im wierd i have a thing for scars. but getting blood drawn is the most painfull thing that i have gone through. funnny thing though i have body peircings and tattoos (shrugs) go figure,
