I received the following message from work, have been assured that it is NOT a hoax. This particular one is for Brits, but I'm sure something similar could happen anywhere:
Would you please advise all your mobile users of the following SCAM Urgently. This will affect all mobile users, regardless of the network their phone is on.
If one of your users receives a text message asking them to dial any ' 090 ' number, please ask them to follow the following instructions:-
1. DO NOT Dial the number
2. Take note of the number they are asked to dial and details of the message.
3. Report the incident to Vodafone or their network provider, who will in turn report this to OFTEL and ensure that the number is cancelled.
Alternatively, they can contact their Regional co-ordinator to report the incident.
The following message has been received from BT Cellnet and confirmed by Vodafone.
¯--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please be aware that mobile users are receiving a text message saying something along the lines of:
"Please call me on 09011500065 Urgent"
This number is a premium rate number charged at £5.00 per minute.
When this number is dialled you hear an engaged tone. This infact is not a genuine engaged tone but a recording, which encourages them to call again whilst also being charged for the call. Each time you connect you are charged the minimum rate.
This is not just BT Cellnet customers but also Vodafone and then
possibly Orange and One 2 One users who are receiving them. It is not network specific.
Corporate Network Security have been advised.
NB: This does not apply to those hand sets which have fixed dialling programmed on to their SIM cards, which will therefore not be able to ring the number quoted below.
