Public Service Announcement

Hello, this may seem like a simple thing that is indeed not too important, but this horrible act is committed every day throughout the world. Please do not ignore this message.

Salt. It seasons our food, swims in the sea and is white and crystally... Seems harmless enough, right? WRONG! Salt can be very deadly to slugs! So please, never, ever put salt on a slug. It always results in hospitalization (wherever participating Slug hospitals are located) and many times even death! So please, next time you pick up a salt shaker, shake those evil slug-assaulting thoughts out of your brain and only think of your food, PLEASE. Thank you.

This has been a completely pointless Public Service Announcement provided by SimplyStrange. I have officially wasted a few minutes of your life that you will NEVER have back...Mwuahaha!

Not a complete waste of time.
I feel terribly guilty every time i put down stuff to get rid of slugs and snails. But if i don't, they chomp their way through practically everything i plant - we have a chronic slug problem here!
Anyone know of any quick painless ways of getting rid of them?
Most people say to use beer traps - at least they die happy that way!

I've found that by strategically planting marigolds in my garden I've reduced the number of poor slugs that must be slain by mine own hand, salt shaker in one and garlic butter in the other. Slugs are just Escargo in the nude

My slugs just LOVE marigolds, a real treat for them! I keep planting them to keep aphids away from the roses, but they never last long enough to do the job.

And to amend to that - if I ever go near a bloodsucking leech you better believe I'm going to burn and/or salt the sucker. Just like a slug but with bad intentions!

(haha I had to edit this as soon as I posted it, I err spelled slug wrong the first time... I'm not sure salting the other one would help... 8O)

Then again, who does have sympathy for leeches? I can't stand it when the guys from those animal guy shows like Jeff Corwin are like, "oh look I have a leech on my leg. I'll just let it suck and eventually drop off." Eeeuuu....*SHUDDER*

While we're on the subject...

OK, this has nothing to do with slugs, but cruelty to other living creatures in general...

We just found out we have some mice where I work... it's a very old building that was a farm house in teh 1800's. Anyhow, I'm trying to convince my boss not to call the exterminator. There are little devices you can put around the house that emit a frequency that drives mice nuts, and they leave. My boss wants them dead *GASP!* I couldn't live with myself if we killed the poor little things!

How cruel!

However, if it were leeches....

A couple of years ago Organic Gardening magazine published the results of a university study on slugs and beer traps. They put dozens of beer traps out and counted the number of slugs they caught. The most affective brands of beer for trapping slugs is the alcohol-removed kinds, and in particular European brands, like Kaliber and Haake-Beck. Apparently they worry about being arrested for "drunken creeping" or "crawling-under-the-influence". Maybe they're part of a 12-step program for slugs and are trying to stay on the wagon... I wish they would swear off hostas instead of alcohol!!!:D Happy slug hunting!!

If my workplace was infested by leeches, I know I'd definitely be working in the wrong place entirely! I mean, I have my doubts now, but leeches? Whew!:p

EW have you ever been walking out on a beautiful morning. . . your day for ONCE is going so right. . . you just want to sing. . . the grass is so nice and green and the dew is so wonderful on your toes as you go to get the paper and cut some flowers fresh at sunrise. . .

and then the next thing you know, there's this disgusting SQUISH between your toes, and you're doing the "EW OMG SOMETHING STUCK BETWEEN MY TOES EEWW GET IT OFF GET IT OFF GET IT OFF" dance on the lawn, dragging your toes along the grass?

about the only grosser thing to step in is cat puke/hairballs. And at least you know where that came from (assuming it's your cat).

Leeches? I've never been hit by one of those *knocks on wood* . . . but I think my brother and mom are leeches, and they've both hit me, so. . . 8O

slugs are nice.

very nice.

i like slugs.

fried in garlic butter -- as previously pointed out, they really ARE escargots in the nude!

leeches, though, i must admit, i find very useful. i don't bruise too often, but when i do, it's VICIOUS. this, honest to gods, works: if you have a nasty bruise (even hickies, i would think), put a leech on it and let it do its work. it doesn't hurt at all (which is why you never know it's there until someone points it out), and the bruise will be all but vanished in a few minutes.

yes, they look disgusting, but so do a few of my ex-'s and considering what i was willing to do with THEM at the time, a slimy little critter sucking out rotten blood seems Tea with the Queen in comparison!

8O 8O 8O I know JUST what you mean - makes you cringe doesn't it!!

BTW, my ex-ma-in-law had leeches as part of her treatment for skin cancer, first i knew of them making a comeback. Seems it's quite common now.
