View Full Version : Canada Vs. USA

I plan to move to Canada as soon as I turn 18. (Maybe Boogins could take me in. Whoo! ) I'm just curious about some of the pros and cons of it as opposed to the United States.
Who lives in Canada here? Who doesn't? What do you think of it?
And as a somewhat related question: Why does the US always make fun of Canadians? What the hell did they do to them?

I've actually wondered why people assume the two countries hate each other. I've never heard any Canadians say they don't like the US and I've never heard an American say they hate Canada. Then again my closest friend is/was Candadian and much prefers the United States to living there.

Hey, Klucky, you'd be royally welcome to come here! (Whoops, that's a pun.) The series will get picked up, and you could work in my production company. :woot:
The two countries are really very similar, but... well, I've been all over the world, and I lived in the States for a time. Give me Canada--specifically Alberta--anytime! I love this place.

I'm American, my hubby's Canadian and we've lived in many cities in both countries over the last 6 years. We both prefer the States to Canada, but there are pros and cons to both. The cost of living is much higher in Canada. Hubby's from Alberta. I love Alberta (Calgary in particular) but we have also lived in Ontario and we both hated the entire year we lived there.
Basically it's personal preference. There are alot of legalities an American must go through to be able to live and work in Canada though, even if you marry a Canadian citizen.

Taxes are higher in Canada and it's questionable if you "really" get more for your tax dollars.
The Canadians I have dealt with as a nurse rave about the hospital I work at, they come down to the cancer center all the time.
I know of several nurses who come down to work here because they make roughly $20 an hour here as opposed to the $12-15 an hour(US Funds) they make at home.

this country is really great because well besides the fact that the beer is much better lol. Plus there is the snowmobilling in this country. this country is perfect for any recreational activities like four wheeling and other hiking, mountain biking. This country is also a terrific place to live because of the beautiful sites we have here in mostly all of canada you can see the stars and the sunsets r perfect . it think this country is perfect for neone who just wants to have fun.

The UN continually votes us as one of the best places to live and I have to agree. I have been to the U.S. and can honestly say that, no offense to the Americans here, I would personally never want to live there (no offense!) We are by no means a perfect nation but I do beleive we are a good place to live.

"At the top of the list in the 2002 report were: Norway, Sweden, Canada, Belgium, Australia, United States, Iceland, Netherlands, Japan, Finland, Switzerland, France, Britain, Denmark, Austria, Luxembourg, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and Italy."
To argue that it is "more expensive" to live here I have to argue the contrary according to this source and my own research.
http://www.mercerhr.com/pressrelease/details.jhtml/dynamic/idContent/1096495
"Canadian cities are much cheaper, with none of those surveyed appearing in the world’s 100 most expensive cities. Toronto and Vancouver maintain their previous year’s positions at 104th (64.9), and 110th place (63.2) respectively. Ottawa is the least expensive Canadian city and takes position 127 in the survey, with a score of 57.2."
My parents bought a nice new house on 30 acres out of town with a barn and shop for $150,000....in rural areas like mine you get really ncie places for cheap.
Pros:
Health care
Better educational system
Less gun violence and crime
Friendlier people
Smaller population
Manners
Beautiful scenery and a lot of "preserved" nature
Cheap housing in the rural and northern areas
A lot of work in trades and health care
Cons:
High taxes
Cold winters in a lot of regions
You pay more for items
When you visit the U.S. you have to listen to people ask you if you have running water and if there is "summer" there (this has happened to me)
You can only buy liquor in liquore stores.
If you want a government job you must be bilingual
Massive mosquitos
Less powerful dollar

That would be the individual doctor's fault...not the health care system. What I like is being able to leave the hospital without a massive bill. I've always gotten good treatment, like anywhere we ahve some excelelnt doctors and some who are mediocre, that is all over the world.

And as a somewhat related question: Why does the US always make fun of Canadians? What the hell did they do to them?
Disclaimer: This is NOT meant as a generalization, there are plenty of Americans who are not like this, I am only speaking of a certain group of Americans.
That being said...
This reply may not make me many friends but I have to say the answer is ignorance. All too often the Aemrican educational system has neglected to teach the population about the world outside of the U.S. On TV and radio it happens often and the jokes are based on unfounded myths rather than facts. At times the jokes are offenseive and the American saying it doesn't realise how it would feel reversed.
For example...I was in Montana once and an American heard I was from Canada and said "So why do you Canadians talk so funny? you taught to speak like that in school? do you have many schools there or are they all buried under snow?" He thought this was funny and he and his friends laughed, but imagine saying that in reverse? if I had said that to an American I would of gotten an assault of patriotic commentary and how rude it is that I say that about the MIGHTY USA! GOD BLESS AMERICA!
So really...the Americans "hate" Canada because they don't know much about us and think that any nation other than their own is inferior, so it isn't so much "hate" as disrespect. The Canadians "hate" America because of the constant rudeness shown even when they visit our country due to the fact they know nothing about us.
This commentary is not meant in a mean way, it is simply my observations.

Cons:
When you visit the U.S. you have to listen to people ask you if you have running water and if there is "summer" there (this has happened to me)
exactly! I think this is why a lot of canadians have a somewhat negative view of americans in general. Also .. recently .. from my observations .. there is a lot of canadian-felt-angst about the current political situation in the states and how certain things are being dealt with.
Where I am there is a *lot* of anti-american sentiment; though it is mostly aimed in general and when the few americans that ever come around here, there is nothing against them personally, if you follow my meaning. though mostly those people are hunters and really *ought* to have some negative feeling towards them since most of them poach .. but thats besides the point
con:
where I come from (or the city i moved out of a year ago), we had the highest child poverty rate per capita, the highest violent crime rate per capita, the highest drug/alcohol abuse rate per capita, highest per capita illiteracy, etc. I say per capita to this all, because Saskatoon is a pretty small city. And even though it has all these highs, the city is still rather a safe decent place.
con:
jobs ... if you are in the high tech sector (like me) in Canada .. forget about finding a job. I haven't had a real job since Nortel kicked the bucket and I have lost hope that I ever will. It is fairly impossible to find anything other than a McJob around here.
And I completely agree with Muireannach's comment above about why the U.s makes fun of canada etc.
pro: fabulous summertime weather, perfect for beer (so long as you don't mind the smog ... ok it can't ever compare to city smog in a large center, but really, the middle of the prairies shouldn't really have smog at all hey)
pro: health care system is a great safety net for those who cannot afford private health insurance like blue cross. How much did I pay to give birth to my daughter in the hospital and have nurses come to my home four days after she was born, every day, to check on us?? Nothing ....
pro: its peaceful here on the surface

It's the truth, if you move to the West you'll be a welcomed "Americano", that says "pehtates" instead of "potateoes" like everyone else.
In the East, well burn American flags outside your doorstep. This happend just acorss the street. So if you move here, it's better to say you're from Meh-hico. Just don't fly anything but Canadian, Welsh & British flags in the east. Oh and none of those half-Canadian and half-American flags, they disgust me... Canada is not part of the USoA and not vice-versa. If it was, I'd move back to Wales.

Well you just have... :broomride - Generally we love the American peoples, we just have serious issues with their Governement, whom their peoples didn't actually elect. Tis why I can burn American flags - they are a symbol of their governement. Oh oh... I love American Country music, it's so... well HAPPY :lookwhats so, really I just don't like their Gov. Oh, yes. Free health care. In Alberta, you have to pay premiums--the only province that does--but that might be ditched soon too. In fact, the only problem with this province is our goverment: the premiere is the ultimate redneck. But I doubt if he'll be re-elected.

Hey, well Klucky, when you move in with Boogins, both of you are welcome to visit me in the Nation's Capital! :D
I don't think that Canadians hate Americans or vise versa. I know a lot of Candadians who don't like the American Government. But I don't think many americans like the US government either.
Pros of living here. I live in a relitively bad neighbourhood, but I'm not afraid of getting shot, or mugged. I don't leave my doors locked during the day. I can start a conversation with anyone here and they won't look at me as though I'm from an other planet.
I also find people more tolerant. If I understand well, in some places in the states, you tell them your gay or a witch, you get harrased, car broken into ect. My step-mom (who's american), had a friend come up here from NJ for her wedding with my dad. He has a gay pride sticker on his car. He was suprised to see his car untouched. When I tell people here I'm a witch, they go, "neat" or say nothing.
The health care thing is plus. I never realy thought about it before till someone brought it up. And now, I'm truely greatful that I have free health care. What if something realy major happened. I can't afford to pay thousands of dollars.
Theres also a lot of space here. Think about it. Canada has a population of 30 million. Isn't that the population of LA? I think it's a bit slower paced here too.
I'm very happy to be Canadian, although we do have higher taxes, I think of where those taxes go (helthcare, social programs ect...) and I don't mind so much.
Oh, and an other thing. Less sensorship. After 10:00 you can here the f word on CTV (I'm thinking of the Sopranos here).

I DESPERATELY want to get out of this COUNTRY. I have friends and someone Im particularly close to in Canada, so, its off to Canada I go :) When I get the money that is.
I dont know that the two countries HATE eachother, I think its Americans making fun of Canada and Canada returning the favor. Americans do it to virtually every counry. France, Mexico, China, you name a country, Americans have probably thought of a joke about it or the people there. I do think Robin William's joke about Canada was hilarious though "Ya know, Canada is like a loft appartment over a really great party."

Canada is not the same thing as the US. We share the concept of democracy, but we don't share a system of democracy at all. The vast majority of Canada--unless you want to go live in the territories--has the same climate as the northern States... like New York State, for instance. We get temperatures into the 100's and we freeze our asses off, just like you, according to season. French? In Quebec. I'm in Alberta, and the only place I've ever had French spoken to me was when I was working in a bank, and when my bilingual boyfriend wants to say something outrageously suggestive to me in the presence of my sister... which I can easily deal with. And religious intolerance? Never experienced it. We have pagans, Sikhs, Zoroastrians, Christians, Jews... Canada is not a melting pot. Canada is a patchwork quilt, and I think that's great!

I live in Canada. Have for the most of my life, Ontario Canada actually. One of the provences where you have to be 19 to drink publically, now privatly on your own property that's different, kinda.
Let's see. I believe Casino's can be entered by people who're 19. If you smoke Mariju, can't spell it right now to tired. If you smoke weed it's being more-or-less decriminalized and is still topic for being made a non-illegal substance. (I know topic for another forum and been many posts already)
Taxes ARE higher. 15%, I believe however, you also have to keep in mind the difference of money and what Taxes pay for; Including Free Health Care.
Gas prices are about the same, you just have to look at it in a metric system.
"Canada's cleaner" - Something I've just been told while on the phone to my American Love. "No Bush!" She also adds, energetically.

Yeah that's also true. I agree and confirm after living in both America and Canada.
Canada we learned about the American/Canadian war of 1812. American history classes didn't mention it at all. In Canada we learned that concentration camps were not just used by Germany in WWII. America didn't really touch upon their own blunders.

Erm..I feel the need to correct.
We are different from the US socially, geogrpahically, historically, and we also have a different method of operation.
The government is not religiously intolerant at all, I have never experienced anything of the such. Just be careful of your predjudices (everyone has them....) as hate crimes, even as small as commentary, are dealt with by law enforcement.
Not all areas are cold. Southern areas of BC have winters that have no snow, it is a frigid "damp cold." My grandparents live in a desert (yes there are such things as deserts in Canada as well, just very rare) In the areas that get no snow they experience a few months of colder weather and a bit less sunshine. It all depends on the region you are in.
Being of French Canadian decent and speaking the language fluently I find it a bit offensive when you list us as a "con." If you don't like the French language then flip over the other side of the packaging and go on your way. The French culture in Canada has an interesting history and folk culture, but I guess since they aren't English-speaking you probably have no interest. I hate to sound a bit sharp, but I have spent most of my life listening to people talk negatively of my cultural identity and constantly joke.

At least as far of your discussion about history education in America, that might have just been your particular school. My history classes definitely discussed all you mentioned and more. Unfortunately, history is becoming somewhat of a lost cause. I can't count the number of times I've been told how unimportant it is or seen cases of "cleansed" history being taught. And these are things that happen everywhere, not just in the US.

Well, Canada has my vote by a long shot. :) Why? I'm a straight-edger (no drinking or marijuana and stuff, so that part of the culture doesn't apply to me), I hate the heat, I LOVE the cold, I'm always bundled up anyhow, I don't care about higher taxes if I know my money is actually going somewhere good, I'm in the process of learning French (just in case), I want people to be tolerant of me for once, I want someone to say "thank you" when I hold the door open for them, and I just want to feel safer.
So off to Canada I'll be going! :D

Here Here! :drinking:
My boyfriend holds the door open for everyone, male, female it doesn't matter. Well he held it open for a woman once and she stopped, looked at him, and said, "Excuse me! I can hold the door open for myself!" And then she SLAPPED him across the face!! If he hadn't held me back I would have kicked her bitch ass to the street...grrr. Sorry, but sometimes living here really annoys me. What is it that makes Canada and America so different? The people here are so rude, I mean, being a cashier shouldn't be equivlant to being a verbal abuse sponge...

Canada was origonally an English Colony named, I believe; Ruperts Land (the mainland) And it was during the first World War that we established dominance. The Canadian troops won one of the five most signifigant battles during the war I believe. I appologize that I cannot remember the name of the battle; I know a Hill was in the name or something. Well I'm Canadian, and I have lived in the states (over the summer) as my family had a place down there for several years (sold atfer 9/11~they were too afraid to visit anymore!). Personally, I love Canada, and find (among other things) the people up here are more polite(generally) and friendly to strangers (talk about typical stereotype!). However, I used to love shopping in the states, as they have waaay better malls and stores than we do up here (I don't know why...!). In Vancouver (where I live) the drinking age is 19, so you can get into clubs, etc then. I find that way cooler than 21 (which i find a bit odd...thats SO old!!) so alot of americans along the border come down here to party. Overall though, there aren't many differences culture-wise, except Canadians LOVE hockey (it's true), we have better beers (although im sure some would contest that), and Canadians (on an average) are way more laid back and are subject to poking fun at ourselves. As a canadian, I find some americans SOO stiff and uptight!! Loosen up!!! :tongueout
And by the way, we don't hate americans. We joke about it alot, but like I said we canadians like to poke fun at everything and everyone. Maybe this rumour that we hate americans is just some uptight ones taking us too seriously?? :geez:

There was this big committy of people, and they had letters in a hat. Well they called up this one man who'd been orginizing a Basketball game (that's right, a Canadian invented it!) and he pulled out the letters.
"C, Eh! N, Eh! D, Eh!"

Ten provinces--British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Plus three territories: the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. While we have English and French as official languages, only Quebec insists on French.
Incidentally, from my experiences in the States, I think you folks hear a lot more Spanish down there than we do French up here.

Hey NH, based on your post I assume you have never been there...so I pose a question...
Do you ever "feel bad" living as close to Canada as we do, and never having at least visited?

May 19th, 2004, 01:18 PM
Well, I have visited.. a bunch when small.. to do the Pow wow thing.. but not to look at anything.... THEN there was this time like 6 years ago, to do a concert gig, and I was detained for two hours.... They did not like something...... well, anyway.... feel bad? Yea, but I have been at Boeing for 27 years and never taken a vacation either... So, Montana, Idaho and Oregon are about in the same shape...

I'm gonna have to talk to my uncle for you!
I feel awful. I've been to NC and OR countless times, FL, NY, CA, and HI many times also...yet I'm only a few hours from Canada and I have *never* even seen the boarder....
:wah2: I'm so underprivelaged!!!!

Nope! That's in Ontario--three provinces over. Our provinces are REALLY big too. You know how Texans think Texas is so huge? You could fit five Texases into one Alberta or Saskatchewan. I'm a whole lot closer to Nighthawk in Washington.

My theory (and my husband's) has long been that we should trade Canda Detroit and Western New York for British Columbia. I definitely think we'd make out in that deal.

PROS:
-Canada is the same thing as the US
CONS:
-gov is religiously intolerant (to my experince)
-cold!
-french
Why do we make fun of Canada? Because we can, and if we didn't make fun of them that wouldn't stop them of making fun of us. Canada has an inferiority complex.
Firstly, most of that is wrong ... Canada is NOT the same as the US. Our society is a LOT less capitalist (and I, for one, prefer it that way).
And I don't know where you were when you ran into people who were religously intolerant, but I live here and people don't even ASK me about my spiritual beliefs. The general conscensus is that religion is a private matter and it is impolite to pry into something that isn't your business.
And depending on where you are, it isn't that cold here ... I site BC as an example ... our climate is almost the exact same as Washington state (only we get less snow).
And that is the end of my mini rant ;)

Oh, and Klucky, Quebec was colonized by the French before the Brits. First the king of FRance was just out to make a buck but then he figured "Wait a second! the guys don't want to stay!" So he sent breeding stock: Les filles du roi. There was a good TV show made in Quebec, it was translated, called Shehawe. You'd like it.

Silly Tzhebee, don't you know what we'll do if you try to invade Canada? We'll simply disperse in this giant country of ours and leave you lost in the bush. And then, when you're all alone and crying for your government to find you, we'll assault you with beer bottles! :hahugh: :fpeace: :drinking:

I like certain areas of both Canada and the U.S.A.
I have very good friends in Oklahoma, Arkansas, & Georgia, and have had nothing but a warm reception when I was visiting down there. There are also parts of the U.S.A. that I will never go to again.
It's the same with Canada. I live in and love Alberta. I also really like British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, parts of Ontario, & the Maritimes. But there are parts of this country that I'll never venture into again also.
There is a good and bad side to each country. Your opinion will be based on what end of the stick you got when you were there.
