I don't know if any of you have seen this book, but I thought I would mention it.
Its called Lasagna Gardening. Its basically setting up your garden like a glorified compost heap. The theory sounds good and I thought I would give it a try.
The woman that wrote it claims you don't have to dig up the ground to make a garden and the weeds are fewer and easier to take care of.
I am going to try to create one of these, I am going to prepare it in the fall and plant it in the spring.
It almost sounds too good to be true but I will give it a whirl.

I saw that at the library a few weeks ago. It looked interesting. I wrote myself a note to look at it again when we buy a house in the next few years... no opportunity to create compost whilst living in an apartment...

Well I started my Lasagna garden this past weekend, it does'nt look like much right now but I don't plan on planting anything in it until next year so hopefully it will look better by then.

basically its like a glorified compost heap.
You take all your compost material, leaves, grass, garden weeds, etc.
Figure out where you want your garden, if it is in an area where your have grass then lay down a layer of wet newspaper and then a layer of leaves, then a layer of pete moss, then grass clippings, pete moss, etc. until the layers are about eighteen inches thick (I think thats what the book said).
There you have your garden.
I didn't have some of the materials for mine so I just layered the things I had. I am going to wait until next year to finish it with this years leaves from my yard and I am going to buy a few bags of pete moss and mulch to top it off next year.
The book says you can let it sit and "cook" or you can plant in it right away. The combination of materials makes a great growing environment and keeps pests and weeds away.
the book gives ideas on how to get rid of garden pests organically and other tips.
A really good book. I got mine from the library and am looking for a copy to buy.
