runes are a type of alphabet. the most well known are the ones that originate in iceland, the germanic futharks.
they were and still are used for writing and magic, and then there's rune casting (divination) which is more recent as far as i know. i'm still looking for some historic reference that runes were used in divination, but i'm not finding any.
i've heard about turkish, finnish and hungarian runes, but i don't know anything about them.
i can give you some links for researching the futharks if you like.

this one's very good for beginners. to get an idea of how many different runic alphabets there are, click on origins of the runes.
and to find out the phonetic value, meanings and divinitory interpretations for each rune, click on meanings of the rune symbols. have fun!

Tacitus, in Chapter X of his Germania, describes a form of divination used by Germanic tribes:
"To divination and casting of lots, they pay attention beyond any other people. Their method of casting lots is a simple one: they cut a branch from a fruit-bearing tree and divide it into small pieces which they mark with certain distinctive signs and scatter at random onto a white cloth. Then, the priest of the community if the lots are consulted publicly, or the father of the family if it is done privately, after invoking the gods and with eyes raised to heaven, picks up three pieces, one at a time, and interprets them according to the signs previously marked upon them."

The runes have been (and still are) used for both communication and magic. They were still used here in scandinavia around the year 1000 and are by some believed to have origins from hundreds of years BC (some would even say thousands and thousands of years before that). In the year 1300 the latin letters had "won" the battle her in scandinavia but before that one believs that the runes were used for communication. They carved messages in wood and stone. Unfortunatly there are no findings of wood carvings and there wont be either since they would be to old to have survived into this time... but there are many runestones here (although most of them seems to have been used to mark territory, a local event or in memory of family that had passed, and does not hold any clues to what magical uses the runes may have had nor to the norse religion practised at the time...).
Runes was also used for magic, the runes was more than an alphabet. Each letter had a magical meaning and the runes could be traced or carved on weapons, homes etc for various reasons. Mostly for courage, protection and fertilty. And at the time people used the runes to tap into the runes magical powers. They also sung songs with runes, by singing specific songs before battle they believed that the runes powers and the gods powers would aid them in battle. Many of the runes are connected to gods or goddesses .The knowledge of runes seems to have widespread. Many stones were put up, and today many scientists believes that almost everyone at the time could read and write "rune".
Apart from being used for magic and writing the runes were also used for fortelling the future. There were rituals where runes were cast and the runes could predict the future. Using runes like this was probably not used by everyone. But most likely there were a few in each village that had the knowledge to do so...
Well that is a little info about runes in general. If you are interested in knowing more, there are plenty of information on the internet, try searching google. There is also lots and lots of information here on MW.
Good luck!
Blessed be

I never heard of runes before until recently. I've heard of them as "Ancient Runes". At first I thought they were Egyptians, but not according to this thread. So I embarassingly would love to ask for more information.
What type of experiences have you had with runes? Can anyone give me ideas as to how they use their runes, and what spells they do with them? Just so I can get a feel of what people use runes for.

Runes are mostly used for divination I think, though if you do a search there are several rune-magic threads :)
I'd suggest doing some general reading on the subject to begin with; find out where they're from, what theyre about etc xx

There are numerous types of runes, in fact, I doubt I could even list them all. I believe I can count up to around ten different varieties, but don't ask me to list them at this hour of the morning. Typically they vary in more subtle ways than obvious ones, and if you study them as an alphabet it becomes very noticable. To be quite honest, I'm rather tired of seeing the alphabet since there is no definite 'correct' one out there apparently, as I have seen numerous variations even amongst the same type. They also vary in number depending on the type, I believe anywhere from sixteen to twenty-six in most cases.
Outside of that, they are most often used in divination, vision question, and in a wide variety of magical ways from charms and talismans to inscribing candles.
I have a beautiful set of silver coin runes with celtic knotwork circling the run on one side and the pentagram on the back, with celtic knotwork interwoven all throughout it. They cost around $80.00 or so, and the only reason I have them in spite of that price is cause I didn't pay for them.

I think they probably are all "correct", but you must remember that dialects varied within each country, and so I'm not surprised there are slight variations - You will probably find they were used in different parts of the country :)

I suppose you could use them in scabble....there is a blank rune that could be the equivelent of the blank tile. Now all you have to do it learn the alphabet, figure out how many point each symbol is, then you're good to go. I'm sure Milton Bradley will make millions off of it. :rotfl: :T
