In the begining:

We have found out recently that my dad has an allergic reaction to scabies, a mite which is carried around by animals and can be carried by humans. The allergic reaction can include: servere itchness, soreness, liasion, bloches and general discomfort all over the body.

We have had to pull up all the carpet and polish the wodden floors underneath and take away the animals.

My animals are my best friends. I have had my cat for 5 years now and my rat a little less. We cant find anyone to give the cat to and the petshops will not take older cats, only kittens, so I have to take her to the vet this afternoon to be put down. My rat has to go to the pet shop and be put down as well, seeing as no one wants him.

My mums guide dog also has to go. Her guide dog instructor is coming over this afternoon to put her up and give her to another home. She is still workable as she is only 7. We have had for 5 years as well.

I feel terrible. I'm losing my best friends. This morning I did my daily reading and I picked Justice. Which equals: balance, law, harmony, karma, fairness, moderation, equality. [Any problems will be solved fairly]

Fairly? How is that fiar? It may be fair to my dad but it certainly is not fair to the animals that have to be put down or to my mum who looses her independance.

Oh that is so awful! Isn't there any way to keep your kitty from being put down? No one will take her? I am soo sorry for your loss!

I'm so sorry. You could put an ad in the newspaper for the cat and maybe the rat if it's not too late...

Are there any allergy shots or pills your dad can take?

Are you sure about the rat. I had read that mites on cats and dogs are not the same as rats and that pet rats rarely carrie them.

This is all so awfull!!!!! I am so sorry. ~hugs~

Are there any no kill animal shelters?

I'm sorry. Cant you take the cat to a shelter or something? There has to be a way to keep from having it put down...

Ok, The Cat and Rat... that really sucks and to me... to me mine you it seems your Dad is being selfish there. But, it is his house and all... But the guide dog? THAT is being selfish. Scavies are no fun at all. But it's my understanding that cleaning ALL the laundry in HOT water, bathing all animals and humans in the house in medicted soap, and steam cleaning the mattresses, should clear up the problem. Like Shanti said pets don't ALWAYS carry Scavies... of course the critters mite be a bigger pest in astrallia then they are here in Michigan.

Either way my sympathies ArKane

I agree wholeheartedly. Isn't there anything your dad can take? Was the reaction life threatening? For your mum to give up the guide dog is over the top.

I looked up scabies and found this site:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/scabies/factsht_scabies.htm

It indicates that the extreme length your parents are going through isn't necessarily necessary. It also indicates that the pets might not be the cause.

i'd be quite surprised if your pets were the cause. they might be infested at the moment, too, but that would clear up with trreatment, done at the same time you treat yourselves and the household.

Clean dogs, cats, and rats do not suffeer from scabies as a matter of course...they just need a treatment, too. (Not that I'm suggesting your pets are dirty, just that they've picked up the infection along with the humans.)

I really hope you find a way to keep them.

I just came back form the vet. I had to put her down, the local RSPCA was full for the time being and the pound would just put her down anyway. I was there when they did it. [sarcasm] DO you know that animals seem alot heavier when they are not liveing?

I have tried to talk to my mum and dad about it but they insist that it was 'the only way' the doctor said get rid of the animals so they did.

I tired telling them that scavies can not infest rats and that we could bath the animals more regulary and there werealternative options but my families half dutch. We are stubborn as hell, my dad wasn't listening.

The troulble is I dont think that this is going to help. They will just come back from the animals that live around the area [because we live in the back on a school near the bush].

I'm off to get extremely drunk now.

Cheers.

I am so sorry. If I were there, I'd take the rat in a heart beat. Don't get too intoxicated. Well, actually, I know I would be. I'm so sorry.

I am soo sorry for you. This is awful. Its unfair to you and to the poor animals.

DAMN DOCTORS (before anyone gets shirty I will acknowledge there are exceptions to this). If Id had a pound for every poor woman who phoned me when I used to do cat/kitten rescue and said "Im pregnant the doctor says I should get rid of my cats because its not hygienic, they carry worms, diseases, they will smother the baby" etc etc etc Id have been able to buy a good few more cans of cat food. Wear gloves to do litter trays, cover your mouth with a damp cloth - of the stuff is very dusty, worm the cat, use a flea treatment - KEEP A CLEAN HOUSE!!!!!!!!

When my husband started having problems with his chest - what did our brainless GP do????? Ask if we had pets - he didnt take the fact that hubby is a stainless steel worker working for a company that doesnt have adequate ventilation and is a known fact that some of the dusts from that sort of work can provoke asthma into account - just blamed my cats/dogs. I told him he could go to hell if he thought my babies were going anywhere.

WHY IS ALWAYS OUR PETS THAT GET IT FIRST?????

Once again sorry for your loss - when you get your own place you will be able to say what happens - not your parents.

Blessings n hugs

Angry....very angry:flamer:....I'm sorry for you and your babies...but I'd refused I'm sorry maybe its me, I've always been closer to my animals than to most of the people in my life...so it would seem that YOUR father should have been the one to make changes...like someone said, pills, shots? something....very few things are completely untreatable...and the killing of the trusting-defenseless animals seems to be NOT a resort at all...my dad once said to my mom...HE said he was allergic(hypocondriac,sp?) so it was the cats or him...she said Good bye, he 'found' a way to survive...he'd should have figured out a way to make it work slelfish arslock. I'm sorry...I'm just flaming one of your parents! Excuse me, I just love animals more than people... :dis:

Oh, ArKane--that sucks big time! I think I would curl up and die if we had to get rid of our fuzzies; I am asthmatic, but I don't care.

When you move out, carefully pick a place that allows animals, and allow yourself some.

I'm so sorry. :hugz:

Ditto Boogins!

Didn't anyone suggest Malathion washes? I know it's not the safest chem on the planet, but one of my neighbors acquired mange-related scabies because she didn't have one of her dogs properly treated. She was covered up until the day she was evicted last month.

I did not like the idea of her parading herself and her animals around my part of the townhomes so I did a regular light misting with Malathion Plus around the yard. I didn't like doing it, but we (me, daughter, dog and cats) never picked up the mites, either.

I'm also wondering about the likelyhood of the infection actually originating in the school... If they are in the school-yard due to any infestation of one or more children, that could indeed be your source.

Doesn't Avantage control scabies too?

Doesn't Avantage control scabies too?
Yes, I think it does. Theoretically the female mite is the one who invades the skin, and regular treatments of Avantage will build up a poison that effects parasites upon entry/blood contact.

Hey everyone it doesnt matter what may have been done. ArKane said its over now.
I think compassion for her broken heart is needed most right now?
This is a suggestion. Dont want to step on toes but I dont think what if's are of much use right now.

Hugs ArKane.
