what is it like to be near so many people all at the same time? claustrophobizing? energizing? cold? warm?
i am just amazed that so many people (like the first photo) could be in one place at the same time.
do you get a sense of the big picture when you are one of those in that crowd
what an amazing place to see so many people. all the photos i have ever seen of stonehenge are devoid of people with the exception of scientific shows where theres some kind of historian prowling around with a solitary cameraman and soundman
kinda makes ya think what it would be like
i so wish i was brave.

LONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of druids, revelers and the simply curious witnessed a cloud-obscured sunrise at Stonehenge Monday during an annual pilgrimage to the site to celebrate the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Wiltshire police said 19,000 people converged on the ancient circle of 20-tonstones on Salisbury Plain in southern England, where they partied through the night until the sun rose over the Heel Stone just before 0400 GMT.

A police spokesman said 11 people were arrested, mostly for minor drink and drug offences.

Druids, a pagan religious order dating back to Celtic Britain, are drawn to Stonehenge on the longest day of the year, about 160 km (100 miles) west of London, because they believe the stones are a center of spiritualism.

I can't imgine trying to find a spiritual center amist all of the people! I've always thought that it would be cool to go and witness a ritual there, but maybe not. If I was trying to do a rite, I'd be pretty pissed!!

Yes... I'd love to visit someday, but I don't know if I'd want to go during something like that. Call me a stick in the mud, but it looked like alot of drunken revelry! I tend to get very depressed and drawn inward when I'm around a whole bunch of people being loud.

:) Bigger than you can imagine.
And, yeah, the energy just surges there. It's pretty incredible. But I would prefer to see it as I got to the first time, on a quiet Sunday with just a few people wandering around. Frankly all those people tramping and drinking on a sacred site like that makes my annoyed.

My aunt us leaving in a few days to go on a UK tour, and she promised to take lots of Stonehenge pics for me. But man, I would have loved to have seen her god-fearing face were she to stumble into the solstice celebration. :p

When hubby and I lived in the UK about 21 years ago, he took me to Stonehenge. I couldn't go up to it because it was all fenced off. I was told back then that authorities were worried about vandalism and the like, so no one was allowed to get up close.

Guess they've changed the rules. Didn't look like much of a ceremony to me, looked like a dorm house drinking party. I'm with you guys, would much rather see and experience it up close with much fewer people.

Wonder what condition all those people left the area in?

I am a stick in the mud. I don't like to be around a bunch of drunks.

I'd love to go there, but not with all those people who don't respect it.

they still have it fenced off 'cause people suck and ruin it for everyone, thats why i said i would go, cause that may be the only time i could get up close to the actual stones

Sooo......, they fence it off during the bulk of the year to protect it from the idgits out there who would harm it, and then open it up a few times a year to 19,000 folks who are drunk, high, and probably won't even remember the experience?

Jeez. Still wonder if the participants pack out their trash.

I have to agree... to see so many careless people so close to the stones makes me really nervous. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that way.

ya i wonder about that too, the English Heritage must have some ways of protecting it during these events, i know there are security but other than that...

Wow!!! probably the Royal Park People... (is there such a place?)

In New Orleans.. at Midnight on Fat Tuesday.. The cop cars start driving down Burbon Street followed up by the street cleaners and Guys with shovels and stuff.

It is disgusting.. Can you imagine the filth that they clean up?

For months afterwards you see beads in the bushes and stuff all around New Orleans.
