I am outraged! I am in shock... I am upset! and Furious....
My grandmother is home from the Nurseing home, this is good news, however, the Nurse gave my mother a list of the Meds she was taking while in the Nursing home...
this is not the same list that My mother and I had given to them when we admitted her there (we had to sign paper work there too, before we transfered her from the hospital )
ok, now, here is the confuseing part... My Grandmother had fallen, and Broke her HIP...she had orthopedic surgery, and was to go to the Nurseing home for 1 month for PHYSICAL THERAPY...... the medications she was taking were for her Emphazema, and her Parkinsons, (neuropothy) her feet get numb...
and her pain pills......... that is IT
How did she go from that.... to TWO AntiDepressants and Nurotton.. in adition to what she was supposed to be getting , and by the way, my grandmom told me that they didnt give her the purple pill as often as she should be taking it, she takes it 3 times a day, this is the Sentiment for her feet.......... My mother has power of attorney, so shouldnt they have contacted her for consent before they had the Resident Psychiatrist evaluate her... and by the way, he made a diagnosis of Dementia..................... Um hello she has Parkinsons, ........ she is still heartbroken at the loss of My Grandfather NOT DEPRESSED as in needing to be on meds.....
and you dont give a patient TWO different Types of Atidepressants for any long length of time, unless like in some cases for a week when switching meds...... I know this because I am taking Zoloft and Paxil for 7 days, then I stop the zoloft and take just the paxil CR.
My Dr told me that I had to stop the zoloft after the 7 days because any longer and taking the 2 together could cause a reaction or worsening of symptoms, ....
and they had her taking Paxil, and celexa for 4 weeks apparently.....
I am absolutely appalled! I want to go over there and speak to the head administrator, and ask her to see the Psychiatrist's Credentials.... I am doing research on the Presribing info, to see if I can find documentation to support my DR's statements..... but I dont want to ask him to show me because there is no need to bring him into the loop.....
I told my sister we should get a lawyer, but she doesn't realize the seriousness of the situation, I guess this is why Im asking for wisdom, I need to sell my sister on the Idea of getting a lawyer, or DO I need to get one? IM confused, so this is why im doing the research.... are there any Medical/Legal people out there that can direct me??

I would be talking to an advocate of the aged at a BARE minimum.......
Let me tell you a quick story of why my grandmother a sweet soul not a mean bone in her body...became mean nasty short tempered and just not fun LOL
I went down (surprise that's my role huh lol) to sort it out and see what we would do was it dementia???
nope it was a sweet old woman who thought docs know best and she never told the specialist that the regular doc changed her meds and then never told the reg doc the specialist changed them -- she was not honest (lack of abilty in understanding imho) and there fore the docs were treating the side effects of each others meds
causing her to take a blood thinner -- couple hours later a thickener all day
lol and then causing a series of mini "strokes" --- now this was not really the fault of the docs they asked she wasn't "honest" we found out cause i called the reg doc and said look i want to know what each of these is for and why --cause there are two of you uping her doses alot!! not interested in a lawsuit JUST in HER health....they jumped right away to help
so when the family "knows" and they still worried over the actions we could take ---- i think someone needs to look out in your case -- and tell your sister that even though grandma is "fine" and has a family that loves her and will help fix this what about ALL of the MANY that do NOT --- she can help be a voice for those with out voices, doesn't have to be mean can be done with love
((hugs))

well, as it turns out,
Celexa and Paxil work together becuase they work on diferent neurons, so takeing them together can prevent Depression in old ladies who fall and break thier hip
my grandmother is 84, and has parkinsins, and osteoperosis...
for her to Fall, Break her hip, and after orthepedic surgery to be home in 5 weeks?
not too many 84 year olds who fall and break thier hip can say that...
and her loosing my grandfather and all, she was in a depression of sort for the past 6 months, she was heartbroken...
GO GRANDMA' :fpompoms: It's yer birthday :)
Im not gonna sue, but we are gonna ask her primary physician how to go about weening her off them, or should we, ... in other words, does she still need to be on them, if so for how long etc

Blessing to you and your family. I have for many years worked in nursing facilites that do work with the elderly and infime. I know a heck of alot of stuff when it comes to the care and medication of the elderly. So here is some stuff for you to consider........
When a person is admitted to a NH their doctors try and take over the care. They then order alot of unnecessary tests and eval for the patient. NH are notorious for over medication of patients in efforts to keep them under control. A person with Parkinsons is not a person with dementia. But these Docs like to make the diagnosis of this as a wya of controllint them. The staff is as much to blame. No one should have their medications changed with out the ok of the patient their current doc and their family.
You can do smething about this. One they have to know that your Mum has POA. So they have to consiult you on everything. Make it known that your Grams doc is the only one to see her and NOT the house doc. Make very frequent visits to the NH. Complain and yell for everything you find out of order. Another thing you realy should do is make a formal complaint against this NH to the State Board of NH examiners. They do not like to hear thngs like you have stated. And they pull surprise investigations as well. You can get a place closed down sometimes.
Get a copy of the Patients Bill of Rights and read it. It can hel;p to protect your Grams. Keep on top of everything that is done. But by all means do not let this slide. It is totaly wqrong to treat the elderly as if they were nothing more than burdens to be controlled by meds and mean aides.
I am sending energies to you and your Grams for health and saftey and all she is in need of. I put all this info here for youand anyone else how might need it. Xander sweety, take good care of her and please let me know how thigns go and if I can help in any way!

well, thank you DS ..
well, Like Dr K's Mom told me last night, for her being 84, and haveing osteoperosis, Parkinsin's and on top of that the emphazima and the loss of her husband...
one month is a fairly short inconvienence...
alot of people younger then her would be completely disabled for life, with the same type of injury, she fell and broke her hip... this is a really small facility .. it has a mass every sunday in its chappel... yeah, like my grandmother is going to want to go to Mass right? my mother has been trying to get my grandmother to go to church with her on sunday for months now... My grandparents both werent the type to go to church on sundays, maybe on easter or christmas, and so.... well anyway, ...... the nurses saw that My sister and I were not just going to let her stay there, and my grandmother was scared when she was transfered to the nurseing home... she thought we were "Putting her in the home" it took a week for her to realise that we werent putting her in the old folks home,
My sister and I both would go after work and on the weekends, so there was always one of us, or My Mother there .... and All those people, in her wing, I think My grandmother, and the guy across the hall were the only people that had that frequent visits from the Family...
and the guy across the hall, I think he is more long term care than my grandmother...
What I am saying is, I think Love had something to do with her speedy recovery... there are people alot younger then her, some of them wheel chair bound, and a few of them can walk with minimal assistance.... I never saw anyone visit them, well some of them.... at least not while I was there, and I was there at least 4 to 5 days a week
and I again want to thank those of you who frequently asked me how my grandmother was... and for DS to say I am a good grandson... BAH, quit that lol it was your love that helped me be strong and helped get me through this.... these threads work people :)
