I am no tarot expert but from what I've seen, read, and the bit of experience I do have...
Use both. Using your intuition is important, but that's often difficult to do when starting out. Go with the book to begin with (although some disagree with this and I haven't truely made up my mind on it yet) but if something in the book just doesn't seem right try to explore what meaning YOU perceive from the book. If the card's imagery is saying something specific to you go with that.

Follow yourself. What do you FEEL is correct? That is where the truth is.

Very few times are absolutes given in the craft, but I believe this is one of those times. Go by what the card resonates as in your mind. Why? Because the cards by themself are just that, cards. They are not special or magical, but merely a set of keys that unlock a door (your psyche or unconscious mind) that holds within it information none of us can even begin to fathom, perhaps all the secrets of the universe, who knows. They are a way to link your conscious mind with the unconscious so that you can retrieve those answers.
Now, with that said, pay attention to the book, perhaps the definition it gives can work in unison with your own. I use book definitions as secondary to my own. Mine come first and if I feel the book can add to my own meanings of what each card is interpreted as to me, then so be it. If it only serves to hinder the process, then I ignore it.
