View Full Version : what do you wear?

Danustouch

Mebbe this belongs in Magick and Ritual forum..but I'm curious. What do you all wear during ritual?

For me, it depends on my mood. Most of the time, I wear one of a couple of dresses that I specifically use for ritual. Most of my rituals are indoors these days..so I really can't wear a cloak or thick robe, so...thus the dresses. But..sometimes, if it's just me, and i'm doing something spontaneous..I'll just wear some loose, comfortable clothes. I rarely go skyclad for ritual...just in case hubby comes home with company in the middle of it, or a neighbor knocks on my door...etc.

I voted for dress up.......I don't have anything specific, but I was raised with the belief that one's clothing indicates one's feeling toward the event attended. So, for a ritual changing clothes indicates both respect and the seriousness of doing one as opposed to simply sauntering into ritual space wearing whatever I happened to have on when I decided to start.

I voted loose comfortable clothing, but it really depends on the situation. For a sabbat or esbat ritual I'm likely to "dress up". But for my daily meditation and offering I usually wear loose comfortable clothing.

And skyclad does have it's place. But for me that isn't very often and not a public ritual.

In Circle most often everyone goes in street clothes, tho there are very rare times that we all don the robes etc. When I work alone if I'm home alone I sometimes go skyclad, sometimes streetclothes, sometimes robe (ie. if it were very ceremonial I'd wear the robe, if it were a very strong important spell having to do with protection etc. I might go skyclad, usually clothing)

**ROFL**

I couldn't vote because there's no one answer that fits me. If there were an 'all of the above' option, I'd vote that. I do what feels right at the time, taking into consideration my surroundings and my feelings. Sometimes I work best nekkid. (To the point that even wearing my watch, my pentacle, and my wedding ring can feel like they're burning my skin no matter how attuned and natural they are to me normally.) Sometimes I work in clothes that I feel comfortable with. Sometimes I work in clothes that I'm not as comfortable with because other people might be around. And if I were ever going to work in a group ritual, or were 'presenting' myself in a solitary ritual, I'd dress up perty or in ceremonial, depending on the occasion and what the ritual and/or group called for.

For me it's the situation that determines the dress code. :)

My mother is very supportive of my Wiccan ways, but I'm not sure how she would react if she walked in on me and saw me skyclad. And I also have nosy neighbors, so when I do rituals outside, I try not to attract any more attention than neccessary.

I couldn't vote either because an "all of the above" or "any of the above" was not a choice. For me its entirely up to the circumstances of the moment. But, if circumstances were always perfect I would practice skyclad, or in ceremonial robe or clothing.

I usually wear ceremonial robes/dresses. Black at esbats and Samhain, white at Imbolc, green at Ostara, red at Beltane, etc. I have acquired many long velvet dresses from attending the various renaissance faires, but have learned to stay away from long bell-style sleeves (I almost caught on fire during a ritual). he he he.

I voted loose comfy clothes because that's what I wear most often. When I go to Ritual with the church, I usually wear a robe and cords. It's expected (not of everyone) and I don't mind in the least. If I'm in my bedroom I either go comfy clothed or naked as a jay bird. My most often occurance is in my back yard, so I'm usually comfy clothed. I feel I work best in comfortable conditions. :cutie:

It depends on how I'm feeling and what kind of magick I'm doing. Since I do a lot of ritual in the bathtub, of course I'd be skyclad.....I've done other rituals in plain comfortable clothing and some in a ritual robe. I wear ritual robes at public rituals about a third of the time. The rest of the time I dress up.

I voted for "loose, comfortable clothing" because, like someone said before, I'm not sure what the parental units would think if they walked in and saw me skyclad.. ( Goddess knows how many times I've been disrupted already!)

Though, if there were public rituals around here, I would definitely dress up and "look pretty".

Usually I just wear loose cargo pants and a sweater/t-shirt, and my pentacle necklace. I'd like to get some sort of robe to wear, but I don't have the time and skills to make one, nor the money to spare to buy one, so my street clothes will have to do in the meantime :P.

Actually, only my skin under a ceremonial robe.

When I do spellwork- I do it skyclad in front of my altar which has a LARGE mirror mounted behind it. I use my body as my focus point. This only works if you have a very healthy acceptance of your body type.

Outdoors, I usually do spellwork and ritual naked under a robe.

Hehehe- it would not take a very enterprising person to punch my screen name into search engine and find skyclad pix of me on the net!

I would have to say it depends...on where I am and who I'm with. If I'm at home, I go bare (if the kids are in bed)...I do have a long dark green velvet cloak I throw on for chilly nights under the moon. If I'm with my group, I dress up according to the calendar. For our Mabon ritual, I wore all browns and golds. I think it's fun to pull stuff out and make new outfits.

I was thinking about making a large cloke for my small group (There's only three of us including myself and the one is moving to Flordia soon), . I have this book that list the differant colors for each sign of the Zodiac. The problem is the metaril that I want top use is so hard to find and I haven't found a pattern that I like yet so if any one has one they want to share... No Just kidding. For right now we are wearing what ever is comfortable and depending on what the circle is for, we try to wear the colors that will go along with what we're doing.

Last month in our study group, we made ritual robes out of a really simple pattern - you just use a t-shirt as the pattern and there are only two seams. I made mine with "angel" sleeves - they go all the way to the floor  so they're also "stay the heck away from the candles" sleeves.....Since I've never been good at sewing and was afraid I'd mess it up, I bought fabric that was only $1 per yard. It cost about $3.50 to make and it is beautiful.

We agreed to dress for our group rituals, now that we all have a robe.

Usually skyclad, except in the few group rituals I've attended. I live in an apartment building, so there really is no place to do an outdoor ritual without drawing a lot of attention.......there is the coulees, but it's been SO FREAKIN' COLD I would be able to get myself down there without losing a couple digits in the process;)

And you might want to take a look to make absolutely sure that no one can see through the blinds and curtains when you think they can't! A few years ago, I'd left a bedroom light on when I went to the store and when I came back and pulled into my driveway, I noticed that I could see very clear shadows and outlines through both a mini-blind AND a curtain:eek:

Room-darkening blinds cost about a dollar more and give you much more privacy. Needless to say, I bought a new one the next day.

No, I have to hem it yet. I read somewhere that in the old days folks used to sew herbs and charms into their hems, so I'm trying to figure out how to put them in there so they'll last a while when washed.

I'll think that the pattern is on a website somewhere. I'll check with the person who led the workshop and get back to you. It was so simple, I am still amazed at how well it turned out!

Wear? What's that? ;)

Hmm.. for somethings we go a la nude, for others we wear the robes, for others we go casual, for others its street.. It all just depends on what it is.

For Rites of Passage, we put on the robes.
For Sabbats, its casual.
For our weekly ceremonies and non-magickal Esbats, its street clothes.
For magick its robed.
In our at-home rituals its typically nude or robed.

That's the usual, anyway. Sometimes we change our minds.
Its not at all uncommon to see something of a mix.. that is to say, street clothes, but with a number of them missing. :) Like socks, shoes, shirts, hats, whatnot ending up in a pile to one side somewhere. Happens a lot at Sabbats actually... funny that... ah well.

But in the meantime... I'm going to risk everything and show you guys a blast from the past.. this is me, years ago, in my robe at the time...

When I first began my journey, I was drawn to the color midnight blue. I first started wearing it during my rituals in loose comfortable clothing. Since then, I have fashioned my own gown and wear it with every ritual and spell I do. Makes me feel closer to my working. Don't know if that explains it or not, but it does.

I have since fashioned a cape to go with the gown, and am now working on a new gown. This one will be forest green.

Depends on circumstances. If it's just me, then I'm probably nekkid already. :p If others are included, I dress in something comfortable and casual.

I've heard the whole "clothing blocks the body's energy" thing before, and it's silly. Clothing doesn't block x-rays, or a bolt of lightning, so why would it block any other energy that I want to use?

It varies for me, depending on what I'm doing, and how many are involved in the ceremony.

I have a robe, for general ceremonies,

I will sometimes just wear "street clothes",

For formal ceremonies I have my "celtic regalia", all handmade, and a wonderful cloak tha my wife made.

And I do skyclad work on occation.

while i voted on the "loose clothing" bit....i use a variety depending on the ritual....am i alone.....the importance (or urgency) of the working....etc.

I mady my own cloak...i like this better than a robe...no sleeves to catch the flame (i'm a bit of a klutz LOL) it's reversable too...green on one side...black on the other...

for really really really important, urgent, deperate workings... i will go Skyclad....no clothing to trip on, gatch things with etc and break my concentration. I only go S.C. when alone though.

My most common outfit though, is a shimmery blue/multi paisley Mumu, and my cloak....no shoes if i can help it!

I usually wear loose comfortable clothing. I don't like to feel too restricted. I'd like to wear a ceremonial robe in the future and I'm in the process of deciding how I'd like it to look, what material I'd like to use, what symbols I'd like on the sleeves, colors, and so on. Right now I wear any loose comfortable clothing I have at hand. However I am working on a robe and intend to use this strictly for ritual. I will even store it seperately from my other clothing with my 'magic things'. It's been my limited experience that this should help me to get into a 'working' frame of mind more readily. Its a tool just like anything else in ritual...not required...but sure cant hurt. =)

I used to wear a black robe (slit at the front, drapey sleeves, hood), but since I almost light myself on fire with the sleeves, I'm gifting it to a friend who has admired it forever. I'm making a new one (sleeveless--LOL) in brown fabric in a Greek style (from a Greek Goddess costume pattern), with golden cord around the middle. It's more condusive to my pantheon and beliefs, and the brown is a lighter colour. Eventually I'll make a black one, as well (I just happen to have 40 yards of brown fabric from bridesmaids dresses that never got made b/c I broke it off with my fiance).

I wear my normal clothing for rituals and magick making. Robes are too expensive and being cought skyclad by my mother might give her the wrong impression (plus it would be kinda embarrasing).

I used to wear my robe and cloak, though I have a new robe and cloak in the process of being made, so for now, ordinary clothes.

I don't always wear a robe and cloak even if it is available to me. Sometimes I will wear specific clothes for specific things, such as my yellow shirt with a faery on it if I'm working with the fae or things related to air for example.

My friend from Marocco gave me a beautiful Moroccan housedress, which I use exclusively for rituals.

i wear what i've got on, my street clothes, but then they are pretty witchy themselves, so i guess i don't need any additional dressing up to do.
(i wear a lot of black and stuff, kinda like the wench in my sig)

If I'm doing ritual at home, I'll usually be skyclad. If I'm with "the group", I'm probably in comfy yet nice clothes (the "good" tshirt, or a hippie type shirt..).

Me it mostly depends the occasion. In the morning it's my street clothes, because I have to head out to school. For special occasions I have a white cotton dress and for Sabbats and Esbats, I have color coordianated dresses. Like the one I'm making for Samhain, it's a deep red, while the one of Yule will be a light blue. I cannot go skyclad because my parents don't know how to knock and just walk in my room, and I have no lock. So for the sake of my sanity and theirs, I put some clothes on.

I know everyone is different .. I strongly feel that a person should be as comfortable as possible. If that means they're naked .. then so be it. If they are comfortable and feel it important to wear a robe .. then so be it heh .. I on the other hand .. wear loose clothing that keeps me comfortable and focussed.

Mostly I just wear what I was wearing so I don't lose focus. I have usually worshipped spontaneously. I have worn a dark blue sarong because it seemed magical.

It really depends on what I'm doing and who's in the house. If I'm alone in the house I will work skyclad and I'm comfortable that way. Otherwise, for Esbats and general workings I wear loose clothes, and for Sabbats and special magickal work I wear my white ritual robe.

Generally I do rituals skyclad... but, if not, I wear loose comfortable clothing. :D

Due to the fact that I have been living with my parents for a while, I don't get much of the opportunity to even DO ritual, much less plan how to dress for it. But when I was doing it regularly, it depended. On my own, I varied between street clothes, robes, and a couple of dresses. With my group, it was always in my ritual clothes and/or robes (depending on the weather).

Most often I just wear something really comfy, pj bottoms and t-shirt... that kinda thing, though they're always washed, so I don't drag the bad energy from the dayinto it. That and my street clothes are jeans, and I'm not *that* comfortable.

I *would* go skyclad more often, but if my bf walked in he'd just get all horny and that would kill anything I had goin on!
