I am looking into making my own runes. Most likely they will be made out of wood.
I have heard many people in here talk about carving or painting their runes, but since I am going to make them out of wood what if I were to burn the runes into the wood? like with one of those wood burning kits?

Any opinions on burning the runes into the wood???

I would think that wood burning would be just fine! You should go with what feels most comfortable to you. I know if I were going to make rooms from wood I would probably go that route. My runes are made from river stones, so I just painted the symbols on them. But I would think burning the symbols into the wood would be more permanent.

Sounds like a wonderful idea! =)
Although carving is probably the most common way to go with runes out of wood, I think that burning is a great idea too, and it would probably look really neat aswell :)

Good luck!

Burning wouldn't be a bad idea. Cut a couple of extra pieces to practice on first. I just finished my second set. I gouged them out of hazelwood. heh! When I say "gouged" I do mean gouged! The disks are about 3/4" by 1/2" & it was really, really hard trying to carve them without cutting my fingers to bits! :p I think I'll try the burning idea & see if I can tidy them up a bit.

Well... depends on how 'traditional' you want to be. Traditionally, Runes are carved into wood, using a knife sanctified just for that purpose. Personally, I use a Dremel power tool. Depending what kind of wood I use, & how many 'revs' I've got the Dremel set on, my carvings sometimes look like I burned them.

Making a set of Runes recreates the Old Germanic-Norse Creation Story. Ve (or Vili, I can never remember) gives Ask & Embla (1st Man & 1st Woman, made from an ash & an elm) shape & form (cutting the Runes, or creating the shapes of the Runes), Odin gives breath (chanting the name of each Rune as you cut it, a form of Galdr magic), & Vili (or Ve) gives Life's Blood (staining the Runes with your blood).

Burning is OK, as is making Runes out of clay, etc.
