Can someone clarify the family-tree type relationships for me...
I think I understand part of it, but not quite.
For instance, my dad's sister is my aunt. Her daughter is my 1st cousin...her daughter is my 2nd cousin - right?
So would that make my son and my cousin's daughter 3rd cousins?
And my grandmothers sister is my Great aunt, not my 2nd Aunt?
And what the heck does "once removed" mean?
Thanks to anyone who can help make this a little more clear than mud.

This website (http://www.home-smith.co.uk/Defining%20relationships.html) can explain it better than I can.

Sorry, no clue here, as far as I'm oncerned you have parents, brothers, sister, aunts uncles and cousins...theat 1st and second and all the removals only matter if you plan to date them I think.....

Is this one (http://home.insightbb.com/~Grand_Uncle_Mark/cousin.html) any more helpful for you?

You know, I have no idea how that goes. I always thought once or twice etc removed meant that divorces had occured. Then someone tells me no. I think I once dated my 2nd cousin in Liverpool once. Sighs it is just a puzzelment.

DARK HELMET: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former room-mate.
LONE STARR: What's that make us?
DARK HELMET: Absolutely nothing. Which is what you are about to become. Prepare to die.

I get it, but I don't wanna. Basically, my kids to my cousins are 1st cousins once removed because my children don't have the same set of grandparents as my cousins.
The things that make your head spin.

Selene (I hope you don't mind me leaving off the {}'s) - That second link was great! For some reason, the chart just made more sense.
Dragonsinger - I used to think the same thing about "removed" relatives!
Nighthawk - My mom's dad is from Mississippi, mom's mom from Alabama, both my dad's parents are from "deep-country" North Carolina...and when I have relatives called "uncle junior", it leaves little doubt in my mind! :bug:

Glad to hear it! And I don't need the { }'s, they're just decoration. LOL

Your parents siblings are your aunts and uncles. Their children are your cousins. If your cousin has a child it will be your cousin once removed. Your child and that child will be second cousins. Your grandparents' siblings are your great aunts and uncles, hope this helps!
