mol
February 22nd, 2001, 10:50 PM
Ok. We all have names here in the Community...for some it is our Magickal names...for some its not.

Some of these names are pretty easy to pronounce.

eaglewolf for instance.

But, some are a little strange. Lets put up some phonetics. How do you say your name?

MINE: How many of you call me mole? As in the animal?

Well, its MAUL as in what I am going to do to you if you call me a mole again! :D

Semele
February 22nd, 2001, 10:53 PM
How about Dork?!?!

Semele....rhymes with Emily

Armitage
February 22nd, 2001, 11:54 PM
Mine's pronounced arm-it-idge...My boyfriend decided I resemble an anime character of the same name, both looks and personality wise. It stuck as a nickname.

Red Dragon
February 23rd, 2001, 01:49 AM
Red Dragon, common pronunciation Hee, hee. Not my craft name, sorry. Originates from the third phase of a dragons life and a key to it's age. As the third or autumn quarter, it corresponds to mine at forty something. ;)

Ex: 0-20 years Green or Spring
21-40 years Gold or Summer
41-60 years Red or Autumn
61-?? years White, Ice or Winter

Just a little dragon lore in case you're interested. I've done quite some research into Dragons, Habits, and legends. Besides, We dragons tend to ramble.
Blessings :D "Red"

Maggie is a nickname, comes from Magpie. My now husband started trying to organize all my stuff when he first moved to the area. He finally started calling me Magpie after he got a good look at all the stuff I had stashed away. I also like flashy trash sometimes, and gadgets all the time. The name appears to have stuck.............

Kalima
February 23rd, 2001, 02:50 AM
That's cute :)

Mine is pronounced Kar-LEE-mah, and comes from the Hindu goddess Kali (stupid comment).
Also chosen because it sounds vaguely Arabic and I have this thing with bellydancing ;)

Mairwen
February 23rd, 2001, 03:05 AM
Neat thread!

Well, Mairwen is my Craft name. It's pronounced "MEER-whuhn", and is a Welsh common-name. "Mair" is the same as Mari/Mary (my "common" name is Mari), and "wen" means blessčd or holy. I've read that Mairwen can mean "Clan Matriarch", which I thought was a real hoot! ;-) I found it last year after doing an exhaustive search for a Welsh-specific name for myself. It seems to have stuck very well. :D

richardcranium
February 23rd, 2001, 06:00 AM
RICHARD CRANIUM. This is a nick name given to me by my friends. They say it reflects my personality. If you don't understand what it means then here is a break down for you. RICHARD- What is a four letter name for this that starts with a D? CRANIUM- What is another name for this? The answer to the last one is head and I can say the other on this board.

Niamh
February 23rd, 2001, 09:42 AM
Niamh is pronounced NEE-ahv. It is my craft name.
In Celtic mythology, Niamh is the goddess or princess of Tir-na-nOg, the Otherworld or Land of the Dead or Realm of the Ever-Young. Niamh guided warriors to Tir-na-nOg at the time of thier death. There are tons of stories about her, and I find them fascinating!
I've enjoyed reading about other's names, and will continue to do so!
Blessed Be!
-Niamh
P.S. Yes, people often say NI-am. It's OK :D

Lady Tana
February 23rd, 2001, 09:51 AM
actually the Tana part came when i was one of those annoying lil' kids who decided that i didnt like the name i was given so i told everyone to call me Tana... and years later i was searching for a name when i had my first aol acct and became Lady Tana... so thats the history of mine
there is a Goddess Tana.. (posted her in the Gods/Goddess' section :) )

and yes... my family still calls me Tana on occasion!

and Mol.... guess you are gonna have to 'Maul' my 5 year old... she sounded out your name as 'Mole' :D

Kaylara
February 23rd, 2001, 10:13 AM
K-lar-uh... This is a mutation of the name Kylara (i think) from a couple Anne McCaffery books. That's my name.

Blessed Be!

This is getting to be an interesting forum don't you think. I mean really look at all the thought put into a name. And hey, :) it's even educational, Hee,hee. By the way, Cranium, isn't another name for Richard "Dick"?? :D There... I said it for ya! It's a hoot!

Twig
February 23rd, 2001, 11:27 AM
My nickname goes all the way back to 1967 when I was in 4th grade. children can be cruel and I was 4ft tall and weighed 140 lbs.

Well,it just stuck. the good news is that I grew up and became more height/weight acceptable to my schoolmates.

But alas,at 43 I find my paunch tring to make a comeback. We druids DO like our ale! ;)
Peace,
Twig

February 23rd, 2001, 01:32 PM
Anyone here from Italy?? Besides you, summer solstice!

My common (maiden) name is italian for "fountain" and Summer Solstice (an old friend of 9 years) decided that she would call me Trevi after the Trevi Fountain in Rome. (At least I think it's in Rome.... ) It's stuck since then.

Then... when my grandfather died in July of 1999, We all got together to go through his belongings and there was a beautiful 24K collectors plate in the "throw-away" pile. I dont know why I even looked at it, but I did, and it was from the Trevi Fountain!! No one else wanted it, so I took it as a sign and brought it home! I had never even seen a picture of the fountain even though my grandparents were from there. Now, I know. And I take it as a compliment that Summer has named me Trevi.... Its a BEAUTIFUL fountain!

What a nice friend...huh?

Oh, yeah.... its pronounced TREV-ee

Amethyst Rose
February 23rd, 2001, 01:53 PM
Amethyst Rose is my craft name, although there's an interesting story in how I chose it. My friend and I were sitting around talking about being escorts and what our escort name would be if we ever became one (she was interested in being one, I wasn't). Anyway.... I decided I like Amethyst, so I guess you could say it's my escort name :).
As for the Rose part, well, that came much later when I realized that Amethyst actually has many qualities that I wish to find in myself... Rose is everything that I already am.

Rosabelle
February 23rd, 2001, 02:19 PM
I think Rosabelle is pretty simple, but for anyone out there who has a simple mind like me ;) this is how you pronounce it:
Ro-sa-bel
:)
it means beautiful rose in french, but i dint know that until a couple of days ago. i just thought it sound right. i suppose it is my craft name, although i also have Turin as a craft name :)

Well, Eaglewolf and Scarlet Swan are not hard to pronounce for most English speaking folk... and were given to us sometime after initial dedication to the path by tradition elders.

They are our "public circle" names. Basically, Path names which are shared with those outside of our tradition. Pen names, screen names etc.

We each have two other names, one traditional (given by our elders) and one spiritual (chosen by us or deity).

Only members of our tradition know our traditional names, and only we know our spiritual names... neither of which are related to animals ;).

Hmmm, that's about it....

Lilu
February 23rd, 2001, 05:35 PM
Well, I was doing pretty well with MOST people's names, even pronounce Niamh correctly *grin*

However, here's what I was doing with some...

Mol - I wasn't saying "Mole" but I was just saying it like short for Molly - more like Mohl or something, real short.

Semele - you'd probably guess most people go for "Se-meel" that's how I was saying. Like it much more the way you say it.

Mairwen - I never get Welsh names right, so no surprise I was saying it MARE-WIN hehehe

And Kaylara - I was pronouncing it how it looked, accenting the Kay - not ignoring the "ay"

I say Lilu like "Lee-loo" I am actually known also on the net as LaughingKoala and Aaerin (AIR-ren) but Lilu is my more recent name. It comes from the movie "Fifth Element" - I kind of twisted it into my own symbolism of being at balance with all the elements.

Well, my name is my magickal name, given to my by Deity. Pronunciation:

sh-TAHV

I later (like 10 years later) found out it's Egyptian and means "His Knife", though I don't know why I was given that name. The fact that it's Egyptian makes sense, though, as my guardian deity is Yinepu.

I've never chosen a craft name. I spent so much of my life hiding I guess I chose not to hide at all when I came here. When I talk to my Gods and Godesses I have always been of the mind of " It's me again ". I've always felt that they new everyone and I never thought of choosing a craft name even when I learned enough to understand what I am. Silly I guess but true. My first name is pronounced E von. It's French. Ironicly my parents when you translate my name first middle and last named me the archer of bitterness on a beautiful island. I love using my husbands name and try very hard never to live up to the potential of my birth name. I guess you could say I use it as a reminder of what not to be. Sorry this is so long.

Ariel
February 23rd, 2001, 06:02 PM
Ariel.

Yes just like that Diseny thing. But much older, much older. It's Hebrew for " Lion of God" or "Light of God". I use it because it is the middle name of my most Beloved Soul Mate Judith. And since she has passed on to the otherside I find it the best way to honour her. It is also the sprites name in the Tempest and if you knew Judith they were a pair.

Ariel

PS. This is the male form of Ariel. Her father thought she should have been a boy. Go figure.

Dagda Moon~Lily
February 23rd, 2001, 08:53 PM
Okay, I have recently acquired this name. I was feeling it was time to get a new name, though I still go by my old one elsewhere on the net.

Dagda rhymes with tag-duh. And I think everyone can get the Moon~Lily part :D

I picked all of this name from pieces of names on a pagan name generator site. :D Dag is my middle name so the Dagda part I related with. The moon entrances me and there's nothing like a beautiful lily. (moon and lily came up seperatly on name generator, I just threw them together for my own selfish needs :D)

Ps: I was born on the autumn eqinox, and it never occured to me to incorporate that into my name....maybe next time!!! Cheesy :D's

enwyn
February 26th, 2001, 07:31 PM
hello! my name enwyn is pronounced EN-win. pretty simple!

i didn't really chose my name though, it was given to me. i was meditating one night and i heard the name called.
since then whenever my spirit and animal guides need to call me or show me something that's the name they call me by. i loved it from the moment i heard it though and i was really excited because up until then i had never been directly addressed by any of my familiars under my old name. the familiar that first called me by that name was a pure white cat with pale blue eyes. he wasn't my cat, he adopted me one night when i was out walking and he followed me home. he became a friend and stayed at my house for about a week up until he gave me my name, and then he left. i still get visits from him in dreams though. :)

*Brightest Blessings!*

February 27th, 2001, 02:44 PM
Hi all,
Well,I think everyone can pronounce Rain BrightStar.I did a lot of meditation under the trees in my yard before I picked my name.Listened quietly.I picked it when I became a dedicant at Beltaine 99.It turned out to be relatively simple. My birth name is Robin or Rob.Years ago I looked up what it meant and it was "bright fame.'Well,a person of fame in the USA is called a star, I wanted a bit of fire, and something from the sky so BrightStar. Then I felt I needed to express my emotional and intuitive side.Well,it rained the whole week I was trying to choose and I thought of River, streams, pond, etc until I was dripping wet, looked at the sky and thought Rain!It was kinda cool, because many of my friends(non pagan who don't know I have this other name) have taken to calling me Rain after the Rainman because of my extraordinary ability in trivia and remembering all kinds of odd things. If they want to know of this or that they ask me and I'm right most of the time, kind of freaks them out.But I can't ever seem to find shoes, keys, and generally screw up with daily things all people do such as tying my shoes.I just forget,ya know?
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
Peace and love
Rain BrightStar

I saw that others were talking about going by other names on the net, I have several others that I've gone by in the past... and I'm in a chatty mood, so here they are *grin*

Firstly in the thread of when born, I was born just before the Winter Solstice in Australia (July 16) and I was 2 weeks early so I guess I could be "Eager to be Born"? hehe

Aaerin (originally spelled it Aerin) was the first name I went by on the internet. Aerin was given to me by a mentor in a dream, she also gave a name ot my sister, and my friend Adam in the same dream, I just can't remember their names. hehe. I later did the numerology thing, and found that by putting another "a" into the name it matched my birth number. So I did. It felt better that way anyhow. Later I attached Danann to it in honour of Danu and Ireland.

LaughingKoala - the Koala is one of my Australian totem (Wombat being the other) and it just decided to make itself a name one day. Laughing is because I enjoy life *grin* I chose this name for a chatroom because I was getting ignored as Aerin in there. hehehe (And we can't have that!)

Ixesha Jade I was known by VERY briefly before I changed to Lilu. Ixesha is said (ee-ZAY-shuh) and is from Xhosan for "time".

And then there is my real name
Donna Leigh
which with my maiden name meant "chief guest of the lady of the meadow" or something like that. My surname meant "Chief Guest", Leigh means "meadow" and Donna means "Lady"
My husband's surname, which I go by now is Leonard and means "heardy lion" in both English and French I believe.

Merry meet, all! I JUST signed on, and this would be as good a way as any, of introducing myself!
I am 44 years old, mother of two. My daughter was zooming around on the internet, and was looking for a handle for herself- She is born in 88, the year of the Dragon, so she chose "Dragonette" I had to sign up for the parent's forum for the site, so, I was "Dragonmom" but I think DragonMother sounds more literate. Nowadays, I make Wands and Athames, and sell them on ebay and e-witch. "DragonMother WandWorks" sounds kind of sweet, don't you think?

Well my username story is pretty boring as it is my name.

However, Beige is just not a name most people have. The actual pronunciation of it is Bay-AH-hay. In the Magyari dialect it means "evening fire". Howver most people would pronounce it as BAYJ and after I heard the joke about the man and wife in bed with the punchline "I guess I'll paint the ceiling beige", the common mispronunciation stuck.

i use to get asked this a bit, it is odd i know that (my name that is) its pronounced boob-in flopp-in

where i got it, my mom said that my family was cursed with the rare anchient swedish disease of floppy boobs, i always wanted to put it on my licence plate mainly cause i have been a DD+ since i was in a bra. we were trying to make it 7 letters to fit on the plate. she (my friend) came up with removing the vowels and makeing it bbnflpn. when i started chatting on the net i had no clue of what my screen name should be, so since i never was able to get the plate (i will have it some day i sware) i decided to use it as my main log in. it is the main log in i have for most places. i have several others mostly vorboten (german for forbidden) and M.I.N.X given to me by a freind who said i was a naugty minx.

Raven Reed
November 27th, 2005, 05:29 PM
My screen name is my first name and my middle name, pronounced as usual.

My dad had a thing for Sam Houston, whose native american name translated as "raven." Reed is a family middle name handed down for four generations.

Boring, boring, boring.

If you know English, I'm sure my name is rather easy to pronounce.

HAP-pee SHROO

I've been frequently compared to the female lead in Taming of the Shrew, but in the positive form of being a relatively tamed one. I'll still tear some people to shreds given the chance, but my guy knows how to calm me down before I do anything criminal.

Élistariel
November 27th, 2005, 08:39 PM
I've been pronouncing a few names wrong.
Semele, I've been calling you Sim-el. I didn't know it was supposed to be said like Simile.
enchancea, I keep wanting to call you ecanacea, or whatever that herb is.
The worst, even though she hasn't posted here yet is fangedeshana. I SO want to call her fang-dang-sh-nang-ga. :bigredblu

I tried typing how how my name sounds, then I looked at it. Élistariel isn't really something that can be explained with the dash ecks-plah-nay-shuns. So, I included old sound files instead. Can't get any better than actually hearing it, can ya?

I know my name's gotten some misprounciations.

*name's = name has*

Honestly it came to me. I don't know why. I put it together when I was between sleep and awareness and bam! Here I am. Over the years I've used it many nicknames have come from it, including SR (which I honestly hate because it also stands for 'senior', but next year I'll be a Senior in HS so I guess it'll finally fit XD), Saph, which is okay, I guess... , and Sapphy, which has only been used by one human being in my entire life, and I haven't seen her in years. =(

I've tried for years to figure out where it came from and I've concluded that the deities gave it to me and I shouldn't question it a bit.

However, I think Sapphires are pretty and Rowan is apparently a goddess but I haven't been able to find anything about her in all of my research, only the mere mention of her name.

When I frist came here I was Serpentine_Beauty-- that was for many reasons, some being my new found love of snakes and my interested in Wadjet.

I left MW for awhile and came back not knowing the names could be changed by Admins so I made another account: WhispersofSaraswati.
That was durning my Hindu-Pagan phase. Saraswati came to me in a dream and I listened. I thought she was my parton...but I was wrong. Heh. She is still one of my favorite Goddesses.

Then I got a sign for what I thought was the Morrigan. I have also had a facination with birds and I am a libra, an air sign. So I changed my name to BlessedFeathers. I kept finding feathers all over then. It wasn't Morrigan, but something else. Blessed meaning: "Bringing happiness, pleasure, or contentment."

Then when that name didn't feel right I changed it again to Belle Terre-- said: 'bell tear'.
It came to me in a dream. It's french, the only language besides english that I know enough to dream in. It means "Beautiful Earth [or land]"
Which encompases everything about nature-- animals, plants, etc.

Who knows what name is next! I have a feeling it'll change sometime in the future.

Alright... Bethra!! I'm after you now!! :T:T:T

Man I've done this a lot. *digs up an old thread*

Here's what I once put here: http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=105829

Mines Lyra Dragon Star

You can call me Lyra

I say my name like this: Lie-ruh ...and I'm not going to tell you how to say 'Dragon' or 'Star' because those are some pretty simple words. So put it all together and you have my name!

It's a phase of my Withces Name. Lyra Eclipse Angel...which I'm thinking of changing back to Lyra Dragon Star. I did not get Lyra from 'His Dark Materials'. Infact, I had never heard of the books when I found this name...which came to me through meditation...and I pronounced it differently. :T

Dragon...was just a phase. I thought it sounded cool. Eclipse...is my MSN nick name. I used it in Solitary Magic and met some amazing people under that name. Found a good friend there too. :) A token of rememberance I guess

Star...I love the night time..I love the sky. I love that sort of thing. So...Star was part of the phase. Angel...well, that's my little secret.

Mine is my Craft name as well, and its just about the way it is spelled: Cyst-laine. :) It just came to me while I was lost in thought one day...not sure where it came from, really. :P

Tzhebee
November 28th, 2005, 11:29 AM
My daughter became a member about a month or so ago, and she saw Mol's pic on a post and asked "who's Maul?" She knew exactly how to say it....I still say/think Mole. :p

My name, Tzhebee. I prefer it pronounced like: tuh (very very soft, almost like an afterthought...not quite a silent T, but almost), ZHE (like she, only with zing) bee (the little buzzy critter). tuh-ZHE-bee

Most of the time, people leave off the Tuh sound and just call me Zee-Bee, which is OK too.

Where it came from? PnP RPG game. I made some uber-bitch character and her name was The She Bitch, which translates to Tzhebee. It fits, I like it, I think I'll keep it around. :)

Oh, and does anyone else remember that "game" in JS about guessing what MOL stands for? Now I know! :D

Christo Pagan
November 28th, 2005, 11:39 AM
I used "Christo Pagan" on here to describe my beliefs. I don't really have any other craft, magical or even nicknames that I go by. Very bland, huh? :geez:

Mitsuko
November 28th, 2005, 12:53 PM
Mitsuko is the name I use on alot of forums, mostly roleplay and in rpgs. Its said "meets-koh". I told a few of my friends this and they said they'd been pronouncing it "meet-su-ko". I got it out of a book called "Battle Royale". There's a girl in there named Mitsuko Souma who almost makes it to the end of the book's "game".

aislin_ryann
November 28th, 2005, 01:45 PM
Aislin means "Vision, Dream". Pronounced "As-lynn" or "A-slynn", depending on what sylable you accent. I have had "prophetic" dreams since I was a small child.

Ryann means "Little leader". It is pronounced just like Ryan, rhymes with Brian. lol I am known for my natural leadership ability.

My sister actually helped me to decide on my name. This is the name I use on line and in study group. It isn't a coven, just a small group of friends who are finding themselves through paganism.

My Magick name that I use in my private circles and the name that my Lord and Lady call me by is Nakia Faye.

Nakia means "Pure, Faithful". It is pronounced "Na-keya". Think of the cell phone, Nokia, but it has an a instead of an o.

Faye is an easy one to pronounce and it means Fairy.

The name came to me after much contemplation and meditation. My Lord and Lady evidently think of me as a Faithful Fairy. lol

My sister's Magick name is Fallon Riona. Fallon means "Of a Ruling Family" and Riona (like Fiona from Shrek, but with an R) Means "Queenlike". If you knew my sister, you would agree the name fits her perfectly. She has that spoiled attitude, but is noble too.

My one friend, his name is Druce Cassidy. It sounds like a porn star name to me. But Druce means "Druid, Wise Man" and Cassidy means "Clever" .

Magick names tell more about a person than their birthnames (duh-I know). I think they are such a personal thing, and to know someone's Magick name is kind of special to me. I'm such a nerd! lol

Ok, I will shut up now!

raminda
November 28th, 2005, 01:56 PM
It's just a name, not my craft name. I was just trying to figure out what username to have here (since I use something entirely different everywhere) and thought of a character I'd created on a game that I named Raminda.

So I guess I named myself after a video game character I made..

My name is my craft name as well. Suggested to me by my familiar (that's her in my sig)

Its pretty much pronounced how it is spelled - Cat - ee- ah - na

Bix
November 28th, 2005, 03:33 PM
Bix...the "i" is short as in big, pretty basic. It's from my favorite character from the Dinotopia books by James Gurney. I still love dinosaurs because of that. :)

And I just realized that this whole time I've been pronouncing mol's and Semele's names wrong. I thought it was mole and Sem-mall. Now I'll have to train myself to think otherwise.
