I just found out that the huge, 300 year old oak tree that I have know my entire life, was chopped down by some idiot developers.

The tree was at the corner of my grandmother's road, right across the street. There used to be steps on the tree, for climbing, since it was so tall....and I spent lots of time in it and on it and under it. All my life, every time I went to see my grandmother, I'd hug my tree.

Anyway, g-ma told me on mother's day when I went to visit that there was a possiblity that it would be gone. I just can't believe it. Here are some pix from mother's day.

That's a gorgeous tree!!!! Why would anyone in their right mind want to take that down? Oh wait... developers generally aren't in their right minds...

Oh, and it's nice to see you hun!!!

Wow! What a beautiful tree... People just don't get it... I had my huge childhood tree house cut down before my eyes a few years ago. That was pretty hard for me as well. Its funny how atatched you can become to a plant.

Sacred oak tree standing tall,
What have you to say?
I will listen with my heart,
Speak to me this day.
Teach me of your strength and courage,
To stand proud and tall,
But to humbly give completely,
Teach me most of all.

I came to you when I was weak,
These were the words I prayed.
You took me in your warm embrase,
There to always stay.

My heart did yearn so I returned,
To find that you were gone.
In my heart I heard you whisper,
You must carry on.
I give to you my life you said,
My strength and courage too.
The lessons of complete surrender,
These I give to you.
Take them now for I am with you,
Theres work that must be done.
In the healing of our mother,
You and I are one.

That's so beautiful, Shanti! And what an amazing tree! I used to visit a really beautiful little area where there was a little creek, just at the mouth of the woods. This little spot was filled with blackberry bushes, flowers and reeds of every sort, and was so full of life. I made my first offering to Mielikki there. Just recently I went out for a walk only to find the creek filled with still, muddy water, many of the reeds trampled, several of the blackberry bushes hacked down, and a tall, wood and wire fence had been built. Apparantly the people who own much of that area wanted the land fenced off.... The minute I saw what had happened, I was so hurt....I just started crying; it felt like I had come home to find my house burned down. The point is, I can really relate to how you are feeling, and my heart goes out to you.

Sorry for such a long post! :raining:

heh. i know how you feel. in fact, i think everyone around here knows how i feel. over the past 2 or 3 years, b&c has "rebuilt" almost every place down here that was sacred to anyone. they started with my old neighborhood, which is crazy with spirits (im not going to go into why) well lets just say they are really really pissed off and causing some havoc that b&c is having to account for. needless to say, a lot of the plans for that place were canceled but they still wrecked the place. it used to be so beautiful. i could go anywhere and be alone.

now they've moved as far down as garden city and murrels inlet. they're killing every sacred place down here, and for what reason? to spend money. they're not actually doing anything productive. hell, half the things they build here go bankrupt over time or just plain arent even used. they ruin everything here. i just think they hate trees. heh.

That is sad...and hard to understand. I've seen some lovely places disappear over the years...as the population grows, we expand into territory, drive out the animals, wipe out the trees...

*hugs*

Shanti, that's a beautiful poem. Mind if I use it? I think I'll have a little ceremony of some sort the next time I visit my g-ma. But it's going to be very difficult to go to her house. My mom grew up with this tree, as did me and my little ones. I used to have tea parties underneath it.

If you look at the third pic, you can see that the tree *was* at the corner of the dead-end road. There is a large field (where I was standing to take the pic) that they're going to develop...but I don't understand why they couldn't just go around the tree. Sure, there is a huge root system but it was the ONLY tree in the whole field. Why wouldn't ppl want a big friendly tree in their vicinity?

Doesnt matter to me. Its a song my friend taught me. I sing it to the trees with my kids. Theres a country golf course across the road from me and there was a beautiful tree that a hawk had made its home. The tree was on the fence line along the road and the golf course just desided to cut it down for no good reason. I cried and my girlfriend came and sang this song. Ever since i have sung it to the trees when ever I feel sadness for their fellow kind and I taught it to my kids so they would understand the teachings and sacrificies of the trees. :)

13th Cylde-

Im very sorry to hear about your oak tree. Sincerely. I have an old Oak tree in a cemetary here in Royal Oak Michigan (there really arent many oaks left here btw) and this "grandfather oak" blooms late, and seems to breath so soft and quietly. He is surrounded by 5 pines (kind of like a pentagram) and it has become such a sacred space for me. I have only known it for a few years, but during the seasonal changes and its age i worry that he might not be there the next time i go out, and am always thankful that he is!

Since i've become so attatched to my tree, I cant imagine how painful it must be to have known your oak for so many important years of your life. Heartbreaking. I don't think most understand what kind of attatchment you had and why you are so angery. I do.

I've heard alot of talk about clearing trees and people referring to "trash trees" or "junk trees" and it just makes my blood boil. There is some thing very wrong in our cultures dialog and mentality when it comes to nature, especially trees and woodland animals. People complaining that pidgeons and squirrels are like rats, and that trees are invasive and "messy". To that thinking I say "what the Hell?!" We chose to live with nature, it was here first, and this urban sprawl is destroying every thing in the name of progress. It makes me feel like a parasite on this planet, and embarrassed to be human, knowing what were doing.

I'm not an activist, not yet any ways. But I have promised myself to do what ever i can to help stop this or change peoples attitudes about thier environment. If you know of any groups, or organizations that have been effective, let me know, because i am just as mad as you!

In Sincere Sympathy,

:( Sigh. ...People...

Just to play the devil's advocate for a moment though, one can't really write off all developers and architects and construction workers and lumberjacks as arrogant and superficial. Nowadays humans need shelter and space because we're so unused to living 'side by side' with anything. Many people would consider a new hospital or housing development to be equally as beneficial as a grove of trees, because that's sorta the way of things. And I mean, c'mon, the desk you're sitting at is probably made from trees that were just as beautiful and sacred, and I bet you'd be pretty pissed if all the wooden items in your house turned into trees!

I'm not advocating indifference here, I'm just saying it's kinda useless to get angry at the people that destroy the environment. I think they need to be somehow educated or awakened to the effects of their destruction, but just sitting up in a tree probably won't make many people think, "Gee, trees ARE incredible," instead they'll probably just pit conservationists against everyone else.

Just my thoughts. Don't know if that made any sense.

I know how you feel. The house I grew up in was the last house on a dead end road and my parents owned the next two lots in, and I grew up with woods on three sides. I lived in those trees, but there were two in particular that I was attached to. One was a giant white pine that was in the woods. My best friend and I played underneath it all summer every summer, and the other was this fat, ancient apple tree on the edge of our front yard, with a strong low branch that was wonderful for sitting on and reading or watching birds or what have you. When my mother sold the land, not only did they cut down the pine tree to build the house next door, but mom had the tree cutters do some "clean up" around the edge of our yard and the apple tree came down too. I was devastated.

I'm so sorry to hear that...it looks like a gorgeous tree. What a shame to cut down something with so much history and so much life. Why did they cut it down anyhow?

Well, there was nothing that could be done "legally" in that situation. A private developer had purchased the land and my g-ma lives a few hours from me, so I couldn't harass them :spidey:

Years ago, the ppl who own the land behind my house decided to sell some to the lumber company, and me and the kids wrapped a huge yellow ribbon around the biggest tree next to the creek, and made a poster which we taped to the tree. That one is still standing. :p

They go to such great lengths to preserve the STUPIDEST stuff and then ruin the greatest areas in a second. Theyre trying to build a new concrete manufacuturing plant out here and everyone is protesting because "Ittl destroy the natural beauty of the area".....WHAT natural beauty!? Its the middle of the flippin desert! The only thing at the site they want to build the plant is SAND!

Yet we had a lot down the street, for some reason, no ones ever sold it, ever since I was a kid its had plants in it. Long grass, very pretty flowers. Its a great place, everyone used to play there, I remember hanging out there as a kid. Last month, they plowed up the whole damn lot and put a freaking GAS METER there, for the whole block. So now instead of grass and flowers, theres concrete and steel.

It was a beautiful tree, and I don't understand why one place needs so many banks and shopping malls. I hate seeing things like that destroyed. Hugs

I'm so sorry. Though it's hard to imagine that they couldn't build around it, I guess they thought they couldn't.

I bet they didn't even explain it to the tree or anything.
