While going about my business with getting my passport, I realized something. Canada would be just fine with me visiting their country to see Niagra Falls, but I'll have a hell of a time getting back into my own country of America. :D Canada probably won't even check my passport and just smile and say, "Hi! Welcome to Canada! Enjoy your stay!", while America will be like, "Are you REALLY an American citizen? You're probably lying. While we inspect every bag you have, make you take off your shoes, and possibly frisk you, we're going to run up on our computers your social security number, your hospital records, your criminal records, your high school grades, your history, your family tree, and what you ate last night. If we find anything the least bit suspicious, then you're not allowed back in." (Then again, once they see me coming, who would blame them? :nyah: )

Oh and I'm also curious to who here has been to Niagra Falls. I'm very excited over it. :)

actually, you'd be surprised... (I don't know what race/ethnicity you are) but if you're white and you're smiling America will let you in EVERYWHERE.

I lived in Buffalo, and now live almost 2 hours away. My family is in Michigan so I am no stranger to the bridges. You need to have your birth certificate as well as a picture ID. The rules have gotten a lot stricter since 9/11. It used to be true that it was too easy to get across the boarders. I have been waved through by a guy in a beach chair that did not want anyone to stop. You now get questioned both ways. Be polite!!!!!!!!! If you are not polite then your car can be taken apart and you must put it back together on your own. A girl I work with had her seats removed coming back into America.

I hope that you love the falls! I do. I have been several times due to the fact that I live in the area. Klucky, I know I am coming off as a bit of a female dog but I have seen people who took an attitude with the border patrol. They did not fare well. I just thought that I would mention it.

Have fun.. but why can Americans and canadians freely travel across each others borders when we have an ally bordering us on the south who aren't given the same respect? the Mexicans who want to be here are probably already here.. I know of many Mexicans who don't want our way of life despite all our luxuries. It is a sore spot, but I understand both sides to a degree. Ultimately our policy seems wrong to me.

I've been to Niagra many times. Stayed in cheezy hotels... hey they are under 59$ a night! and we went to franken stines house of horror, Maid of the mist and the ripleys believe it or not. I wanted to go to the wax musem but didnt have enough time during my stay. I LOVE IT and plan going again for a weekend sometime. the falls are lovely!

To be perfectly blunt the Canadians are not sneaking across the borders. I am sorry, but there is a huge illegal alien problem and Mexicans make up a decent chunk of it. Americans get into Mexico quite easily and return fairly easily. My parents do this frequently.

I have been to Niagara Falls. It was April. It was veryy romantic (you can read about it somewhere on my website, though my words do not do it justice): we walked around the whole night looking at stuff and talking and then spent the night sharing a bed and to s certain extent each other's arms though that was all. There were no other people around that night; it was like we were there by ourselves. It was foggy. It was so foggy you could not see the falls by standing right next to them. I was so nervous I threw up when I got off the plane. We didn't take in any tourist attractions. And the next morning we were off to Pennsylvania via Buffalo as thats where he was living at the time. I really miss those times and wish he had been a better person to me.
The border is tough. I had the unfortunate experience of having to cross not long after 9/11 and wow ... 'nuff said. I look like just anybody and I had my stuff searched and was given a "pass" that I had to obey and a definitive return date (or else they would hunt me down like a dog lol) because I had no job at the time and they thought I was illegal alien or something instead of just going down for another visit with my then-sugar.

Have fun Klucky!

I live near by and have been there in all seasons. The Canadian side is the best and most fun.
If you are a naturalized citizen carry your papers with you, it's the American's and getting back in you need to be aware of.

Be sure to try and see the falls during the evening, particularly from the Canadian side. When I was there last a few years ago, they put on a cool light show on the falls when it gets dark (but the light show gets turned off before midnight -- maybe sooner.)

I'm a Canadian and my same-sex partner (we're married in Canada) who is also a Canadian works for a US company. We come back and forth between Canada and the US a lot because of it. I've been turned away at the border a couple of times because, as they keep telling me, same-sex couples might be recognized in Canada but that doesn't mean we can come into the US and expect to be treated equally. They've been very rude about it.

Getting back into Canada is always no hassle. It's the getting into the US that is the fussy part. Be sure you do have all your relevant paperwork with you (maybe even marriage licenses to prove you are married to your spouse if you're married.) We've also found that the big busy border points like the international airport in Toronto handle things better than the smaller ones as they handle more people and are generally more on the ball about things. The smaller crossing places often seem to have people who act like it's their first day on the job and they get flustered by the slightest variation in things.

Ooohhh, a water light show would be neat! But I'm sorry you have to keep going through such hassles with the states. I can't wait to get out of here and move to Canada. :)

I am glad to hear that! You would be surprised how many people do not behave! I grew up a half hour outside of Detroit, and then moved to Buffalo. I have been near a bridge my entire life and the things people do are scary!
