And did I even spell it right?

I've seen threads that "explain" astrology, satanism, tarot, Karma, etc. But I haven't found one to tell me what Reiki is...

And I apologize in advance if I am spelling it wrong!

Reiki comes from two words that mean "Universal" and "life force energy". Universal life force energy.
Using Reiki is using this energy for healing and life changing purposes.

It originated in Japan I believe, by a man who had studied both Christian and Buddist philosiphies. He went on a quest into the mountains to find something he thought was missing. When he was on the brink of death, Reiki came to him. He was infused with this healing energy. He went on to train and heal many people, and Reiki eventually came to the US.

Reiki uses a process of attunment from a Reiki master. At the first degree attunment, you learn how to access and use Reiki, and you learn the hand position on the body for self healing and the healing of others.

At the second attunment I believe you learn the Reiki symbols, and how to use them in healing, which advances the process.

The third attunment is when you reach Reiki master level. At this point you learn more Reiki symbols, and you learn how to attune others.

Supposivly you can be "remotly attuned" by a master because the Universal Life Force energy is in harmony with everyone on this planet, so it is a matter of attuning you to hear it remotly. I do not know if this truly works or not.

Normally you would go to weekend Reiki classes to get attuned, and then practice for months before attending a class for the next degree.

I am sure someone can help you better than that, but maybe that will clear up the basics.

um, this should be in health. Reiki is not magic. Its the manipulation of energy for healing and change. like turning on a light. :)

I have been remotely "tuned" and am unsure of all the results. I did get better, and had a wicked strange dream some time before it happened. :) but it was some time ago. My wife practices Reiki

Thank you EarthChild -- RelicRavenEye was pretty much dead on.

The rediscoverer of reiki was Dr. Usui -- he was given Reiki after a 21 day meditation on Mt. Kuruma .

As to studying both christian and buddhist philosophies... That's under some debate, depending on if you ask the western or eastern taught students.

The symbols you're given at level two aren't necessarily absolutes -- it's more like the teacher saying "Here are the keys to unlock the door" ... but you can pick the locks without them ;-) .

Also, if you know or your teacher tells you ... one of the three "level 2" symbols is given at level 1 ... they just don't usually TELL you .

As to being remotely attuned ... I believe it's possible, yes, but I would think it better to be attuned in person if possible.

Time between degress differs from teacher to teacher ... it's more of a tradition thing than anything else... if you have the mental and physical fortitude you *could* Get your 1st, 2nd and Master attunements all in one day... but be prepared for the physical stress afterward!

Getting attuned to Reiki will -usually- put the practitioner through a period of cleansing ... which can range from nothing to feeling like you have the flu ... it's temporary and afterwards you WILL feel much better.

My site, while more of a personal "shrine", is setup for some basic info on Reiki ... http://www.arpg.org/ . Pretty much what Relic said and my additions.

Another note ... there are several different "schools" of Reiki ... they all teach it slightly differently with the one major difference I've found being that some schools seperate the Master level into Master and Teacher levels . There's really no NEED for this, but if that's how they want to teach... /shrug .

and never think that there will be an "inta" fix. Sometimes it will force you through a very traumatic change or decision and although the end is beneficial to you, the journey can be very trying.

Most definitely ... it's not an instant fix... and there are no guarantees that it will cure whatever ails you ... But from my own experience I will say that physically and emotionally I (And my friends that agree to treatment) are better off for it!
