View Full Version : What a Day!!!

Well, i am knackered and so is my poor little girl after her traumatic day! It started when she was coming down the stairs with her daddy, he had hold of her hand and she loves to jump, so she thought she'd jump down a few stairs, well my boyfriend held onto her so she wouldn't fall. Anyway, after that she couldn't move her arm & cryed everytime we moved it. My mom gave her a bath and she cryed as she got her dressed, we left it for a bit then thought it be best to take her to hospital to get it checked.
In the hospital she was fine, she just used her right hand & arm for everything, and let her left arm (the bad one) to hang down.
Anyway, when we got seen to, the nurse was making her laugh, so that when she feels all of her arm ellie would stop laughing when she got to the bit that hurts, she pulled a face when the nurse touched her elbow. She said she'd need an x-ray!
Anywho, i had to sit in the waiting for (with me being pregnant, i couldn't go in the x-ray room) so my mom took her in. The x-ray machine frightened ellie to death, it's a dark room and then this massive machine coming towards her, i could hear her crying while i was in the waiting room, and had to stop myself from crying!
Then we went back to the nurse who had a look at the x-ray's, she needed another doctor to take a look, and they found the problem. The little bit of cartilage in her elbow between her bones had come out of place, and we were told she'd need it popped back in! By this time i was a wreck, my little baby girl who's only 2 would have to have a bone popped back in :wah2: :sniffsnif
The doctor came in to do it, first he checked it again and he had a second thought, it seemed as though the bone had gone back on it's own. So now they had to go ask another doctor, thankfully they were happy to just leave it! I was sooooo relieved, and by this time my poor baby was just so tired & fed up!
We think, while we were sat in the waiting bit, she was just stood there and she suddenly started crying as though she'd really hurt herself, we reckon thats when it slipped back into place on it's own!
Anyway she has some meds for pain relief and for the inflammation, and if shes still not using it by Wednesday i'll have to take her back for a check-up.
I'm just glad all thats over with, and i didn't have to witness them popping the cartilage back into place, man, that would have broken my heart! Lets hope it gets better on it's own, and shes using it again by Wednesday!!!

Poor thing! And ellie too. :p
I have heard that is pretty common- it is called nursemaid's elbow sometimes. Not that it makes it any easier on you tor her....
Here is to hoping you both feel better.

The poor little thing. Every time baby's cry it makes me cry, I'm going to be a blubbering mess when it comes to having my own kids
I'm glad it sorted it self out - maybe it just needed fear tears, or maybe I've just been watching to much Simpsons

Sheesh, talk about trauma. Poor lil' girl, those x-ray machines scared me as a child. I used to think they-along with those drive-thru car washes I was terrified of-would eat me. Of course it sounds ridiculous now, but as a child the fear is very overpowering.
And um, talk about painful. Ow. Makes my elbow tingle just thinking about it. Kind of sad though that kids can't even jump down stairs without some major problem ensuing.

Yeh! I mean, it is kinda dangerous her jumping down stairs  but she has a thing for jumping, jumping on beds, down stairs, on the sofa anywhere! So my boyfriend had to keep hold of her, which caused the cartilage to come out of place :(
But yeh, those nasty machines are so scary when your little, i mean, we can't exactly explain to her that it's just to take pictures either... poor little soul.

 They're made of hardy stuff. You gotta love the fearless look they get in their eye before they do something that you know's going to hurt them. :)
You know, I never knew babies bounced until my brother fell of his change table...

My nephew has the exact same thing happen to his elbow. My sister and her hubby have to pop it back in anytime it goes out. Now that he's old enough to not be throwing temper tantrums to the point where he has to be dragged around by the arms (he pulled that one at Arlington Cemetary while we were visiting one time :foh: ), it doesn't pop out nearly so often anymore.

i would have been heart broken as well if it were my kid!
im just glad its over for thr both of you!
the great thing about kids - is that their bodies heal REALLY fast, much faster then adults.. Thats probably why her body took control and poped the bone back in without any external assistance..
give her a kiss for me!!

I had a thing for jumping and climbing as a child too. To date I have not broken any bones and the most major injury I've suffered was a piece of glass slicing through the flesh between my thumb and index finger-which was the fault of a dog, not my own.
Kind of irritates me that every where you look these days someone has a serious medical problem. Not sure why this is, but I just want to slap the cosmos... or go jump on my bed in rebellion if I could (too tall now, I'd crack my skull).
I was also terribly fearful as a child, so no, there is not much you can say or do to calm her down or convince her otherwise until she grows up. I was particularly afraid of machinery and 'large things' in general. Poor lil' girl, I know how she feels. :(

My granddaughte has had that happen a few times, and yes it generally popped back by itself before we ever went to see a doctor. I'm relieved to know that it's common and usually resolves by itself.
Edited after a google search.

This site says that the physician will rotate the child’s palm and gently flex the elbow, and that parents should not attempt this.

This site says that the physician can teach the parents how to do this themselves. This site has information on what actually happens inside the elbow.

My daughter Dana's elbow is soft like that and has been popped at least three times.
Ellie's around 2?
You will have to be mindful of a couple of things. If she's pulling to go away from you, let go!!! then quickly grab a more stable part of her. Your BF can swing her up onto his shoulders, the view helps stop the fit from not getting their way! You can pull this stunt too, in about 3 months!
The activity where two adults grab a hand and swing the child between them is a really bad idea . It'll pop the elbow again.
Consider getting one of those little halter and leash rigs...it looks silly but is better than a popped elbow or a child lost in a crowd or hit by a car!! If anyone insults you in public educate them with as much poise as they deserve...and remember how hard she cried over her elbow! better a leash than that!
Hugs from one who's been there!

Wow, so it's quite common then!!! I think my bf felt a bit guilty too, it was him who was holding her hand, but he just held onto her so she wouldn't fall.... i think men can be too rough without realising, of course they don't mean to, but i think they don't realise their own strength!
It's not a nice thing to happen to a child

nar, I think most people would have held onto her arm, jumping down stairs could have landed her with worse then a dislocation.

No they can be brutes without knowing it:rolleyes:
I didn't help matters much either that day.....I kept giving him 'that look':dis: till the doctor told us what had happened......
My son doesn't even remember it happening....thank gods for childhood selective memory;)

You poor things!
Don't worry, I even cried at my son's vaccinations...it was just the way he looked at me when the needle went in. He kinda looked like this  he just looked at me like I'd betrrayed him.
I hope Elliemay is feeling better very soon :hugz:

Actually, it's not just men, but you have a point. A lot of strong people don't realize their strength. I too went to the hospital with an elbow out of place when I was young. I don't remember it (thankfully), and the doctor had to 'trick' me so he could put it in place. Apparently I didn't even cry.
Unfortunately, mine was done on purpose. Please let your bf know not to feel too bad, because he possibly saved her from a much worse fate. My cousin broke her leg in three places jumping down the stairs when she was 3. My daughter was also (still is sometimes) a jumper, and one day she jumped off her top bunk bed and smacked the radiator face first. She bit all the way through her tongue. That was an interesting day to say the least, to come home and find that my family had been to the ER.
Hopefully this will all pass quickly, and she won't have any residual stuff from it.

Glad to know she's OK- It's amazing how much a kid's body can handle one time, then injure so easily another time.
