Her devotion to you is what keeps her here in spite of all pain. You must tell her to "Go ahead, girl, I'll be along soon. It's okay, you can go. Go on now."
If her pain has her to the point that she cannot hear you now, you may want to take her to the vet for a shot of mercy. But after that, take her home and give her a proper burial if you have a place for it, as that will give you some help as you grieve.
I know just what you are going through, my wolf-like dog stayed long after she should have gone on... in misery and pain, her devotion was too great to leave easily. I could hardly bear the loss and she sensed that.
I took her to a kindly vet and stayed and hugged her as he injected her. She seemed to go in peace. She seems to be with me still when I need her. She was 15 years part of my life and my daughter's life, and I will be forever grateful that she was and that she still is in spirit.

yes thank you all. I have a nice place picked out for her on my property, but the vet clinic will not be open until its too late, but instead a friend of the family is on his way to put her to sleep. His girlfriend is a vet so he will do it for us.
BB thank you all

I love border collies. Had one when I was younger, he was the best dog I'd ever met. Sweet, amazingly smart, loyal to a fault, boundless energy. He could run all day long and never get tired.
Good vibes and energy on the way, for you and your friend.

I just spent anhour on a reply and I was disconnected!!! But I will retype some of it.
Lady Cowie died at 11:36am today.
She will be missed not only as a pet but as my best friend.
I am gonna give a short ulegy in her honor so everyone could know her better.
Lady was born in norther Ontario Canada in roughly september of 1987. Her owner was very abusive so a friend of the family saved her. Four years afterwards my father seen her tied to a doghouse and asked our friend if we coulde have the dog. Reluctently the man said yes.
Lady came to my home when I was outside playing in the sand with Tonka's, my very first memory of her is when she got out of the truck and ran directly for me. My dad said that this was very rare because of the abuse she used to sustain. I loved her from that moment on. Lady was a very smart dog and kept me out of a lot of trouble. Something like lassy (whats that Lady little Darren fell in the well again? lol) She even saved my life before! Long story short two cross huskies one lady one me, only I walked out. Lady killed the other two dogs which wer twice her size! But in return they ripped her open and nearly killed her, thats the reason we nicknamed her the 6 million dollar puppy!! THE VET BILL WAS HUGE!!! "we can rebuild her,we have the technology, she will be stonger faster....lol"
Any way I love her and will always remember her so to all at MW give a fond farewell to Lady Cowie (1987-2004) See ya on the other side wonder dog!

::hugs to you:: I know how hard this must be, and I'm so sorry. I hate that she had to suffer at all, but can take small comfort in the fact that it wasn't for weeks or months. I hope you can take comfort in that too, and in knowing that you gave her so much love and such a wonderful life.
You may not know it now, or think it can happen, but there will come a day when you remember more of the joy than the grief when you think about her. I hope you can get to that place quickly.

You can count on that. *tears role down cheek*
This is the first time I have cried since my father had a heart attack three years ago.
