View Full Version : Phobias

As mentioned in another thread, I have totally illogical phobias with needles (injection type, not sewing8O ) and spiders. These two are shared by millions of others.
But has anyone got any strange ones?
A friend of mine was terrified of safety pins his whole life, until he tried hypnotism at 30, which worked. The only explanation we could come up with was that he was stabbed by a nappy pin when he was a baby!

I have a friend who's terrified of moths... because one of those giant ones flew in his mouth when he was little.. Kind of absurd, I know, but no amount of "they can't BITE silly!" will help.

My brother is terrified of clowns. Always has been. Although now that he's in his 20's he doesn't scream anymore.
I'm afraid of spiders and am convinced this is something left over from a previous life. They've never done anything to me save keep the apartment clean of flies and other insects!

I have a friend who is scared to death of frogs and hasn't even seen one explain that!!!! I don't understand but I guess it is ment to be that way.:p

Mine is I'm afraid of deep water. I get nervous when I can't touch the bottom of the pool. I've made some progress. When i was in college I swam out to the 10 ft. end of the pool, but quickly grabbed the wall. I haven't done it since.
It comes from when I was a little kid, and my mom made me take swimming lessons. the teacher carried us out to the deeper part to make us go under the water and he FORCED me to go under no matter how much I cried & told him i was scared. My cousin had to jump in and get me cause I was so freaked out. :(
So I just stay in the shallower end of the pool (can go to 5 ft. without freaking) and still have a good time.

I'm terrified of lightening ever since my house got struck. I happened to be unplugging my computer at that instant and a large, blue spark of electricity flew out of the outlet and zapped my hand. The deafening thunder that proceeded didn't help!

I work with someone who's scared of clowns as well...it's a neurotic fear though, induced by WAY too much pot...not a real fear like your brother has :)
My hubby bought a t-shirt that would be perfect for this girl

I'm terrified of Spiders,
I'm too phobic to drive...That's the worst one. I can't explain it, because I've never gotten into a reallllly bad car crash..but every time I get behind the wheel to try..I totally freak out. Nausea, dizziness, sweat palms, shakes...etc.
And I'm also terrified of Sharks. I'm not sure whether that's just being "Smart" or being "Nuts"...though. I won't go into the ocean past my knees, because i'm scared of sharks. I personally believe that since I wasn't born with Gills, I don't belong there! It's THEIR hunting ground, after all..their world. Now, Just recently that Little Boy in Florida was attacked in VERY shallow water by a Bull Shark. Now I'm not even sure if I'll go into the ocean AT ALL!
I think this fear of Sharks comes from a field trip I took when I was very young. We went to Mystic Aquarium, and Seaport. When I was at the Aquarium, it was Feeding time for the sharks. All that blood in the water REALLY traumatized me, I think.

Lurking sea creatures. Sharks, jellyfish... especially jellyfish-types. Ever since saw all those documentaries about them being invisible and then paralyzing you and finishing you off... *shudder*
And I still have this stupid fear about sharks somehow turning up in my pool. I can't stay in the deep end for long when I'm alone.
Hey-- maybe it's cause those old cartoons, you know, where Bugs Bunny dumped the alligators into his new father's pool?

I'm freaked out by stairs without banisters and stadium bleachers. I believe it stems from a past life. Heights don't freak me out. I could stand on the edge of a cliff looking down, but I couldn't stand at the top of the bleachers in high school.

I wouldn't call it a phobia but I'm nervous around fire and firecrackers. Especially when my friends get out the coffee mate and start throwing it in the bonfire so it'll flame up or make fireballs.. Gee I wonder if that stems from a past life... :)

I too am terrified of driving. I have really only driven a few times, and that was when I HAD to because it was half of my grade for a class. It was the most nerve-wracking experience of my life, I had the teacher constantly nagging me while I was trying to keep the car between the lines and still not hit anything. When he made me go out on the interstate I almost started bawling. After I finished the class and passed by some miracle, I realised that I had a bruise on my lip from where I was constantly chewing it from being so nervous. The worst part is my parents are pressuring me to drive more and get my liscence and think its silly that I'm afraid and think I just won't drive because I am stubborn. They don't understand that I practically have a panic attack every time I even sit in the driver's seat! I have never been in a serious car accident, in fact the only one we were in we hit a mule deer in SD in November on the way to my grandparents' when I was about 3 or 4 and I slept through it. The only way I can describe my fear of driving is that it is a bonafide phobia. I realise that the extremity of my fear is totally irrational, but there is nothing I can do about it. The way people drive here doesn't help much either.
I also have an abnormally great fear of commitment in a relationship. When people I am seeing talk about being together in a few years still and "oh maybe we could....in a few years" I will totally get sick to my stomach and try to tell them that I don't know about that. I can usually never see myself with anyone past maybe a few months. Heck, I can't even see myself past a few months into the future usually...its always been like that. Once again I have no previous traumatic experience to justify this, except maybe it stems from my having moved a lot when I was younger and I could never keep friends for long. All I know is that the thought of being committed to any one person for a very long time really stresses me out and it has been the end to many otherwise good relationships.
I'd say that those are my only true phobias...I mean, other things scare me and freak me out, but those are the only things that I think are totally irrational fears.

I have quite a few fears, really...
1.) Spiders. They're freaky little things that I'll examine and watch at a distance outside, but if they're in my room, on my bed or TOUCHING me they will be sure to die! But then I always feel bad for killing them...
2.) The Ocean. I dunno why, but it terrifies me. I can't go any deeper than I can touch the floor and when I am snorkeling I must use a boogie board...even then I'm scared outta my wits! I can't explain it...but it just scares me. You probably won't catch me on a boat anytime soon!
3.) Dying young. This I am truly terrified of. I mean, I am so scared of dying before I have really ever had a chance to live. I want a chance in life, and even though I'm scared of it, I sometimes think it silly. Because deep down inside, I've always known there were some things that I must finish here in this lifetime...
Well those are my phobias...

I used to have a huge fear of driving. I would get massive panic attacks and almost black out....of course, that wouldn't help because then I'd be panicked about being panicked ^_^ But this summer I had no other way to get to work than drive by myself for a half hour each way.... So now I'm getting over it.
My only other real fear is the idea of possession. I mean, I'm afraid of deep water and earwigs unnerve me and I don't like wandering around the woods at night, but the thought of completely losing control of my body and my mind just flips me three ways. I can't watch any horror movie with any possible insinuations of possession because I'll have nightmares for _months_.

get scared of really tall things? I get nervous and go into a semi-fetal crouch if I look up at something that's really tall. Also I can't lie down and look up at the sky because I'll freak. Is this normal? I'm also afraid of heights and can't look down from high places, I always just assumed this was a variant of that.

I am TERRIFIED of Clowns!!!!!! I always have been. Although I guess it didnt help that my brother used to hide Clowns under my bed holding knifes. I did mangange to get him back for that - I put jars of spiders on his bed and he was too terrified to get them off :D He learned his lesson when I started doing that....sort of.
I am also scared of heights, but I think thats because of my family "Dont go too high you will fall" etc.
I also have this EXTREMELY weird thing about my neck. I will not let anyone except my bf touch my neck for some reason and that took forever and a day to let him - I get really scared if someone does, break into a sweat, shake etc. So it makes me wonder if I was hung in a past life or strangled or something.....pretty strange!

Rayne, I'm exactly the same, can't even wear a choker or high necked top. Been like it all my life.
A couple of months ago someone asked me if i have trouble with my throat, because in my aura she could see a line across my neck!
Told her I'd never had throat problems apart from normal sore throats.
She said that she thought I'd been hung or strangled in a past life! The thought that scares me the most is a knife, or sword, so guess it could've been that.

Hmm. I have a mile long list of things that mildly to moderately unsettle me, but I have few phobias anymore.
Clowns and spiders / ticks / scorpions mildly disturb me. I can stand to see them, and can deal with them, but they make me uncomfortable. I generally kill spiders that get too chummy in my house. If they stay in a corner, they're fine. But if they're walking towards me on a wall, they're toast. **L** I feel bad, but not bad enough to stop killing them. Heh heh. I'd kill a tarantula on sight though. The thought of a giant hairy jumping spider doesn't sit well with me.
Heights upset me if I'm by an open railing or something. If I'm in a plane or on a roller coaster, or anything that holds me in place, I'm fine. If I'm not though, I'm considerably nervous.
Electricity can bother me sometimes. It probably stems from a time when I 'fixed' (by splicing) an extension cord using only a little electrical tape and then plugged it in to test it. The sparks and smoke were astounding. It scared me to heck and back. Since then I always have a good solid respect for electricity.
I'm totally paranoid about psuedo-bees (wasps, yellow-jackets, hornets, etc.). They seem to hate me with a passion and are always flying at me and jumping on me and stinging me. :( Rotten little buggers. Strangely enough though, real bees (honey, bumble, etc.) don't seem to care one way or the other about me.
I used to have a problem with driving, but since I had little to no choice, I got over it. I used to also be afraid of ... err ... physical intimacy. (To try and word it nicely.) Through love and caring I got over that though. And I also used to have (still occasionally have) a problem with crowds. All of the noise disorients me and I sometimes I go nuts trying to keep track of who is where and doing what to make sure that no one sneaks up and stabs me in the back. Weird, huh? I've gotten a lot better with that, but it's still unsettling at times.
And I'm still considerably afraid of growing old, decrepit, and senile. I don't mind the thought of dying young. We all have to die sometime. I just don't want to live for so long that I'm nothing but a burden to everyone and the few moments of clarity I have are only filled with the shame of what's become of me. :( I'd rather be put to sleep like an old pet than to suffer through that.
I'm also very afraid of having to ever kill someone. I'm afraid that the only way I could handle it is by shutting off all of my emotions and I'd be forever changed into a cold heartless monster by it. :(
But I think anyone can get over a phobia if they want to and have the strength to try. Everyone is afraid of something, and it doesn't have to be anything rational. Emotions are hardly ever logical. :) Courage isn't about not being afraid, it's about aknowledging your fears and standing up to them until you can overcome them.

Actually, I don't think that's an irrational fear at all, Willow...unfortunately, in this day and age, this sort of thing occurs WAY too often, and very often a casual cautious thought can very well balloon into a very real fear. I feel for you, sweetie, and I will keep you in my thoughts that somehow, you can overcome this fear.

Ok.. this post should be called "Why Bree is the biggest wimp in the world." Here goes.. proceed with caution.
1. Clowns. I think these movies made it worse: Poltergeist and Stephen King's It.
2. Heights. If I'm on a cliff, and holding onto something, I'm ok.. but I cannot just stand up and look over the edge.. too scary.
3. Falling. I hate that feeling. Roller Coasters are bad, but Ferris Wheels are even worse. I don't even like falling down, like tripping. Even if I don't get hurt, I'm terrified after I fall down.
4. Thunder. This is probably the most irrational fear I have.. I'm not scared of lightening (which is the one that can hurt me.) I think this comes from when I was in middle school, I had this friend Brian, and he was terrified of thunder, and I was not. When we would have thunder storms, he would call me, no matter what time and I would talk to him until the storm was over. In 8th grade, he died, and since then I have a serious fear of thunder. Maybe I inherited it.. gee thanks, Brian, I love you too, kid! :)
5. The dark. One of those things from when I was a kid, I suppose.
6. Chickens. I got attacked by a chicken when I was a kid.
7. Water. Yeah.. try getting into a fight with a river, then getting your butt kicked by a tree, while still in the river. Not good for ya. If I'm in water above my neck, I freak out and start panicking.
8. Claustrophobia. I can't stand to be in the mall during X-mas time. Too many people. I can't stand to have my head underneath the covers. I can't stand my parents bathroom, too small.
9. Left hand turns. While driving (or riding in a car), I tense up during left hand turns.. about a year ago I got into an accident going around this corner too fast (I wasn't driving) and we crashed into a guard rail. Scary.
I think thats it for me. Poke fun at me, people.. I deserve it. My fears are irrational and ridiculous. LOL Maybe I should get hypnotised.. get all these fears outta my system.

It terrifys me too. 31 women have disappeared from the
downtown eastside of Vancouver, B.C.
There are 2/3 men who force women into a van, rape them,
and murder them....no bodies have been found:confused:....
but the police have a good description of a man who bragged
about killing the 31 women....given by a woman who escaped
from him.
Let's hope these scumbags are caught quickly!
