This website got posted here a long time ago, and I love the site and the stuff they have
http://www.tarottotes.com/
Only problem is I have no job, and there are a bunch of these I want to get. Now, I know this is going to sound silly, but how do you make these? I am assuming that all you have to do is cut a piece of fabric to a little larger than the height of the bag, sew it inside out and sew a flap on top for the cord but it sounds a little too simple for it to be right.
And, umm...I don't have a sewing machine. ^^;; Will it stay if I hand sew it?

Bah, I got an error message. "The page you are looking for cannot be found..." blah blah bla. :(
I could really use some tarot totes, too! Sure beats ratty boxes. :D
EDIT: Oh, it worked when I typed it in! (Weird.) Those are very cool, and the prices are decent, too!

I've always called those "drawstring bags" and they're very easy to make. I tried searching the 'net for instructions with drawings, but didn't see any right away. You can search a little harder, or look at a pattern book at the fabric store or fabric department at WalMart. :) But they are really simple and these instructions may be enough to help you out. You can use about any fabric, but without a zig-zag sewing machine to finish the edges of fabric that ravels badly, you may want to chose a fabric that doesn't ravel so much. The idea of using a shoelace sounds good to me.

I've made a couple bags like this, though not for my tarot deck. The ones I've done were too small for the sewing machine, but they stayed together anyways, even the one that I lined with felt for our tiny cheesy digicam. I just use a whipstitch (I think it's called), and as long as the material isn't too loosely woven, it's good enough to stay together.
One tip though: Before you do the cordflap/sleeve-thingy, fold the edges of the fabric over at the point where the cord will be exiting the bag. Stitch those edges down, then do the cord sleeve thing. I didn't do that a couple of times, and the edges started to fray and the bags don't look so swell anymore. :( Also, putting a couple of extra stitches at the bottom of the opening where the cord comes out will help keep the stitches holding the bag together from breaking apart.
You can either sew the cord flap down and then thread the cord through, or you can fold the flap over the cord and then sew, being careful to not stitch into the cord. If you do thread it, I've found that using a little girl barrette can help alot. Thread the cord through the fastening-hole on the barrette, then push and scrunch and wiggle the barrette through the sleeve. Gives you something solid to push through.
I tried to draw it how I do it. The red lines are stitch lines, the blue lines are fold lines, and the red circle is where extra stitches are a good idea...

Yes, I made my own as well actually. I made it out of black satin and a black shoestring. I bought some of that fancy trim stuff at walmart and put it around the top, and black glass bead fringe around the bottom. I love it :)

I have seen that site before..but I make my bags for my tarots in a variety of ways. I also color cordinate it with the color of the deck. I use draws strings, elastics or just one with a button hole and button..it depends on the mood i am in at the time of creating!
Sylvan that is aweoms tips, thanks for posting!
Hehehe Walmart is awesome for material and trims infact I got a nice suede like material for my next pouch, but I never have the time to look at the trim.:veryweird

I usually make my own bags but a few months ago when I got a little overzealous and bought a bunch of tarot decks. So I decided to order some bags so I wouldn't have to make them and just to try them out. They also had some cool fabrics that aren't available in my area. They were pretty speedy in shipping them. Their bags are unlined however which doesn't bother me. Anyway here are a couple more sites I might try if all the new decks I want come out at once. hehe I do so want a velvet bag! hrmmmm..

I'm going to be making my deck one out of the silk that I have lying about (scraps lol)... I'm just going to have to do a double layer so that it won't rip!

I found a good site with celestial and fantasy prints. Good stuff here
http://www.ladybuttonfabrics.com/cgi-bin/fabricshop/gallery.cgi?func=search&searchterm=&Category=16&Page=1
And http://www.fabric.com has good cords and trims, and a very nice selection of nature print fabric.

I love TarotTotes.com too!
I've made my own bags out of my daughter's old shirts. Some of the prints on them are so cute! And the pocket for the string is already there.
Take a small shirt and cut from somewhere in the bottom center of the shirt up as tall as you want the bag, then cut over to the outer side of the shirt. You now have one piece of fabric that has one side already sewn. Turn it so the good side faces in and then just sew around the 2 rough sides, up to the hem at the "top". You might have to make a small slit on the other side to open it enough to run a string through the hem on that side. Run string, ribbon, cord, etc. through it and you're all set.
I've sewn 4 or 5 of these by hand. I wouldn't re-sell them, but they will do when you're short on cash, and they also save those sentimental fave outfits (sort of).

I tried making myself a drawstring bag but something weird happened and it ended up half as big as it was supposed to be o.0. I got so frustrated that my fiance got the bag his guitar tuner is kept in and gave it to me for my cards :D

Anyone have a clue? http://www.tarottotes.com/item.asp?iid=51It looks like the Buckland-Romani tarot deck. Lemme check it somewheres... Yep pretty sure it is but I can't find a scan of the exact picture. Here are some more scans of the deck Buckland Romani Tarot (http://www.themysticeye.com/pics/buckland.htm)

The two cards in front may be from the same deck, but the one behind looks like it came from a different deck. I think maybe they pulled TheSun card from three different decks to fit with the theme. :sunny:

Here is the site of a friend who makes bags and reading cloths http://www.geocities.com/magickcottage/
I have one of her velvet bags that I received in a trade and it is STUNNING! I use it to hold my Goddess Oracle deck, which are larger than normal tarot size and they fit perfectly, so these bags are really roomy.

I make my bags out to chamois. I go to the automotive section and buy those that you use to dry your vehicle with. I cut them a bit wider than the deck and about two and a half times as long. I then only have to sew along the two sides of the bag. I usually use a decorative stich on these so that I don't have to turn it inside out and with the flap that comes over at the top, I can just fold it over and then tie a ribbon around it if I choose to. I find that this is so much easier to me.

Ah yes....I make bags for my tarot...the local Hobby Lobby has a really good price on their "remnants" and since most of the pieces are about 1 yard, that's enough for 2 or 3 bags. And I always have odds and ends left over from my "normal" sewing.
