If you're running Windows XP, the Microsoft Paint program can do it. Just use Paint to open the file, then do a Save As, and select the JPEG or GIF image type. I assume Mac has something similar.
Don't know how to do it on an older version of Windows without using something liek Photoshop.
Hope this helps.

Yup, that'll work. Chances are whatever program you use to OPEN the photos as .bmp images will convert them to .jpg files, and it really is just a matter of clicking FILE > SAVE AS> and then selecting .jpg from a drop-down menu.
Maybe if you let us know what program you use for image editing (or viewing), we can offer a little more guidance. :)

My only problem is that the drop-down menu only has bmp.
I'm really at a loss at what to do.
Thanks anyway. . .

If all else fails, you could send them to me and I can do it. I use PSP and it saves them in whatever format. That's the only way that *I* happen to know how, but maybe someone else has better ideas.

Its just that I have a lot of LJ icons that are all in bmp format, and i'd really like them in Gif or jpeg so I can use them.
I can PM them to you when you have time.
Thanx

Have you considered using a free program called Irfanview? It can translate image files to dozens of different formats, including gif, png, jpg, bmp, tif, etc. You can download it for free from http://irfanview.com.
Open your image in Irfanview, and then use File -> Save As and select the output file type. That sould be it.
If you have a lot of graphics to convert to another format, check out the Batch feature.
