View Full Version : How many of us honor Deities who "clash"?

We all know mythology, a while ago somebody who followed Thor told me that because of some of the other Gods/Goddesses I worship he questioned my loyalty to Fenris. Kinda ticked me off as far as I know none of the Gods/Goddesses I honor and love have evinced any displeasure because of "lack of loyalty" so here's my question how many of us honor and love Gods and Goddesses who perpetually clashed in stories? Do you think they mind so much? I personally never thought so. But I want would like other's opinions. :viking:

Ummm wel, allow me to put it this way... IMO, "mythology" is only a way to represent Deity, some of it may be true, but some of it is IMO false. To me, Deities don't clash. So to answer your question I say "yes".

I honour only one goddess so I don't have that problem.

I guess I would have to say that I agree with aluokaloo83, and Charles. I beilieve that they are all One, so how can they clash? The mythologies are only our ancestors way of viewing the Unknowable Ones. There are many different views that are all right, but the all clash somewhere...

You mean you don't have parts of yourself that you hate, FairyMoon? Parts of you that you wish you could change but for some strange reason, you keep not changing? You've never felt conflicted (at odds with yourself)?

I, too, am a monolatrist, but my gods still disagree with each other on occasion. Ma'at and Setekh, for instance. They both want divine order in the universe. But they approach it from completely different perspectives. (The former is all about order and balance, the latter is all about purposeful destruction.)

And I can tell you right now that Brigid and Quetzalcoatl would probably clash BIG-TIME.

No, I don't have deities who "clash." Do you honor these deites simulatenously? I think that they might be conflicting. But then again, they might create a balance that you seek.

for example I honor Fenris as my patron I also worship several of the Asa-Gods so yes I would, I am also a hard polytheist, I believe that each Deity is distinct. I also worship Set, Osiris, and Horus, in myths they didn't get along so hot. I can understand why, but myths to me are interpretations of the relationships of people and the Gods, that doesn't mean it's always true, and as I said before if any of my Gods felt offended by this or that I would know. To me they are a balance of each other. What I'm trying to get at, as far as clashing is say Set and Horus, or Quetzlcoatl and Tezcatlipoca. Just as examples.

I'm human, of couse I have. I guess I should say that I dont feel that there is anything wrong in worshiping dieties that mythologies depict as clashing. These stories are interpreted and changed in a more gruesome version by time and the church over the many many years anyways, and are ( as I see it ) a guide to beginning to understand the God/dess that you want to work with, since everyone interprets them differently. Now, if we're talking spells, I think that might be a little different. If we want love, we won't tend to call on a God/dess od war and destruction... right? Sorry so long, just trying to make sure I'm understood a little better and that I'm getting the right point accross.

I honour Morrigan, as she was the first goddess to make her choice known to me, that I should serve at her altars. I also, more recently, honour Hathor - her choice has come across just as strongly, and after a great deal (read two years) of thought I've accepted her call.

This makes Morrigan extremely displeased, for whatever reason. I don't know how I am going to balance this, at all.

I've sorta had a shift in spirituality lately, but I still am a Daughter of The Morrigan.
She is still around, though I think she is not the happiest camper with the fact that I work a lot more & honor Mother Mary. They are definitly two very distincts opposites, but I find these opposits to work well in my life. I adore them both, they each have different prespectives on life and they each teach me different things.

I only have one space that I call my altar. So they both share this space. I havent gotten any "complaints" from either to be honest and i think its because they are aware of the fact that I simply dont have any other place to put up an altar, otherwise I definitly would... So my altar pretty much has a drawing of a Crow, and Cinnamon Incense within the incense holder (which I light every Dark Moon in honor of The Morrigan), and I also have my little rosary collection on one side of the altar - one rosary box with a drawing of Mary and the Sacred heart, and another beautiful little rosary box that has a small statue of Mary herself. There are also two white candles, some crystals and a statue of a little pixi.

To me they both represent dark & light that are tangled together in the world - in every single aspect, including Divine.

If anyone is pissed its probably Brigid.. I've been lacking my artistic inspiration for a WHILE now.. I think its cause Mary & the Morrigan have taken over

My primary ones have been showing themselves to me the last few months. Nox and Juno. I havn't found any mythological references involving both of them.... Nox isn't seen much at all.

I asked them about a week ago. And felt slight grumbles on both sides. ie... they dont' particularly care for eachother, but know that each has an important place in my life at this point.

Juno has become more of a major aspect in my life. Nox doesn't seem to really care as long as I continue to explore the tasks she's given me.

personally, deities don't clash, they are opposites that provide a balance and i think that's a good thing.

My patron (Well, matron rather) goddess is Athena. Except for the Trojan war, she wasnt much of a trouble-maker. Shes alot like me, she likes to stay apart from things untill she has to be in them.

Well my god and goddess are both in the greek pantheon and i think they get on rather well. I say theyre mine but theyre the two that look out for me most of the time, i know thee are other gods out there, spot the polytheist, i'm just content with the two i have now, If i need to borrow help from another god i'm sure they wont mind.

I don't have a clashing-deities story, but I am interested in the topic, and since there doesn't seem to be a way to subscribe to threads without replying, I'll just post here and get the subscription :D
