Sorry for sounding umm, dumb...
I was showing my kids a beautiful figurine of Gaia the other day. And I have no idea how to pronounce it. Jee- ah? Gay-ah?
Thanks!

I've seen it as Jee-uh, but I really like Guy-uh. I'm not sure either though. :(

I've always heard that it's pronounced Guy-uh ... but pantheon.org has it as jee-ah. I would think that they'd have at least some idea of what they are talking about. Olivia Newton-John pronounces it Guy-uh in her album "Gaia". I much prefer it that way.

I've never heard other than guy-a, either.

I saw it in pantheon.org as jee-ah too. that It is one reason why I was wondering. Then just recently I saw it as gay-uh, but I can't remember where. And one of the hardest things about being solitary and in the closet is that I don't get to hear some of these words.
Don't even get me started on athame. :D :p

LOL! Do you know where I heard "athame"? Charmed!! 8O8O
I'm glad it's Guy-uh too-- the others just don't sound right to me. :)

*snort* maybe someone could start a "mispronouncing athame" thread in Magick and Rituals? LOL! :D

How about a "mispronouncing everything related to Paganism" thread? Cause I still do that. :D

Chris~ would be a great contributer to such a thread. Except I often don't know when I am pronouncing something wrong!

Yep, I pronounce it Guy-uh as well....and I love Olivia Newton-John!!! (don't tell my hubby that though....he calls her Olivia Neutron Bomb  ) And if you remember a cartoon called...oh darn...what was it called....the one about all the ecologically concious teenagers with the holographic friend called Gaea (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg), they pronounced it "guy-uh" as well....
Well, I guess it's a tomayto/tomahto, potayto/potahto, let's call the whole thing off type of thing ;)

You guys should have heard me trying to pronounce samhain! What I came up with is nothing like what the books said it was! Someone needs to come up with a manual for us solitary Wiccans so we can half-way get these things right!!

athamé ~~> uh-thaw-may *or* ath-uh-may (and I've heard "uh-thee-mee", but that grates on my wee little ears!)
samhain ~~ "saw-win" (like sawin' lawgs in your sleep) ... also, "soo-wheen".

It might be Gaia = Guy-ah, Gaea = Gee-a.

I use Gaea as a psuedonym and I pronounce it jee-uh, because that's what the dictionary told me. But maybe it's just because I like to sign my emails:
See ya
Gaea
:)
I don't know if Gaia is pronounced differently though . . .

I'm new at this, but I did same research into this (I named my new kitten Gaea). I believe the differences in pronunciation come with the differences in spellings.
I've seen it spelled Gaea and pronounced Gee-ya and also
spelled Gaia and prounounced Guy-ah.
It's just a thought.
Thank you - blessed be.

Thanks for the thread, now I don't feel so stupid - how about Cernunnos (hard 'C' or soft?)
Cybele (like Sybil??? or Kibeelee?) and Ogham (Celtic tree alphabet - is it "uggham"? ) Sheesh - it's like learning another language. Well, I guess it is learning another language.
