I took this post directly from the "what's bugging you thread" because I realized that I just didn't want to state what's bugging me, I want to be able to rant and talk about it...

For the second year in a row my husband asked for a raise to industry standard pay -- he even did research on what others in his field are getting paid and made a proposal stating his case. But instead he gets a whopping extra $200 per month. He's getting paid $18,000 LESS than industry standard, but the company is too cheep to pay him what he deserves. On top of that, no job market exists in his field, in this city, so he can't even go anywhere else.....sigh.....

This means no new car.....

AND I just found out that the comany has a pay plan for the IS department that tops out at $43,000 after he worked there for 6 years. So even if he sticks around for 4 more years he STILL won't be getting paid what he's worth, (Industry standard in this province for his position averages $48,000).

Stupid cheep son's of.......

My husband said that if we weren't in the middle of buying a house he'd have quit on the spot.

The stupidist thing is that he got one of the highest raises in the company. Our friend who's the marketing director got a whole $25 extra per pay cheque, and that was the biggest raise in the marketing department!! Wouldn't you find that incredibly insulting?

Umm, he gets raises?? We do not here.. only like 10 or 12 cents a quarter... but, if he cannot pit himself against someone elses business, what do you do? Like you said, no other market.. Business is going to help itself first, unfortunately.. I am sorry.. cheap cheap cheap..

The thing is he works for one of Canada's 50 best managed companies. They've got revenues of about 200 million a year. They can AFFORD to pay industry standard. It's not like they're a struggling mom and pop organization....

Ugh! I hear ya! My hubby is stuck in a similar position. He changed from a job he loved but was dead end to a job where he was assured there was advancedment. When he got there he realized he was lied to and he can't go back to his old job. I'm cranky along with you.

Go to the job bank website for government positions. www.jobs.gc.ca See if he can't get anything in Ottawa, if he's got a University degree in anything he can get a great job there. Them government employees are paid sooooo weel Gods do we all know that here. At the worst you can move to Ottawa, and then we'll go for picnics!

Sometimes, big companies like that realy cheese me off. I don't think they see 2 inches farther then their noses! Don't they get that not everybody is a millionair?!

Please hug you husband for me hun. You'll get the house then he can look for a new job that pays well and treats their employees better. And have a hug yourself :hugz: I'm sorry about this frustrating situation.

Moving isn't an option Llewyth, seeing as how we're 2 weeks away from posession on our new house. Government jobs....worth looking into, but he only has his IT certificate from college -- never did university. Wouldn't hurt to look though, thanks for the idea. And I totally understand about being lied about. They did this last year too. Told him that if he does "such and such" (last year it was complete a huge project by june, this year it was write a proposal), they'd "see what they can do" about paying him industry standard. So even though I was hopeful, I kinda figured from last year that they'd screw us over again.

Cappy: Can't see 2" infront of their noses is right. The two owners probably take home 10million a year each, but they pay their IT head (my husband) half of what he's due? Uhg!

How do you think these companies get so rich? The executives make a fortune by not paying the workers what they are worth. I was in a simular situation here as well. It sucks big time!

My SO's boss has an assistant to make sure everything goes smoothly for him. She just about butters his toast in the morning! I need someone to butter my toast! :ggrief:

My hubby works for a company that is privately owned but has revenues of over 900 million a year. They have over 15 retail stores (and growing) and are headquartered in our town.

He started with them 10 years ago last month. When they made him their Unix System admin 2.5 years later, he was making 40K less than industry standard.. He even turned down two other jobs in different states..2 months later. One offered him 47K more than he was making at the time, and another offered him 85K more.. He turned them both down because his parents were elderly and he was the only one here to watch over them, and because at the time he was moving out and didn't want to be away from his kids. (that was 7 years ago) He has since earned "Associate of the Year" and they've finally realized what he's worth. He still makes less than Industry standard, though the difference in pay is much less

I was feeling the same way a few months ago.
