I have a problem meditating. If I close my eyes and try to relax, I sense something in the room and I open my eyes and look around but nothing is there. This happens even when I try not to meditate. I can't help but feel like I'm not the only one in the room, and it scares me, even though I know that sounds silly. I've always been able to sense when a person/animal walks close to my door without hearing anything, but I'm thinking that's just a human instinct and not a "power" that I have. I really don't know who else to ask this to, who won't think I'm an idiot.

Hmm, sensing things doesn't sound like a problem to me. You should probably work on improving it or something instead of thinking it's a 'bad' thing.
Well, anyway, here's a meditation exercise I use (and it seems to be working fine for me):
Get into a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Take a slow deep breath in (fill your lungs with as much air as possible), and as you exhale (sp?) slowly, imagine that all your worries and tensions are going away. Repeat two more times.
Then, inhale to the count of four (the slower you count, the better; but not too slow), hold to the count of four, exhale to the count of four, hold to the count of four and then start over again.
After doing this for around 5-10 times, I find that I don't need to count anymore (the counting is done in your head, not aloud) and I feel relaxed and all that good stuff.
Well, hope I helped!

A couple of questions for you. Do you meditate in the same room all the time?
If the answer to that is yes, then I would suggest meditating in a different area.
If the answer is no, then I would work with my shields. If you think that you are letting your guard down then you may become a bit paranoid and have that sense kick into over drive.
In addition to that I would ask if you have tried to contact what it is you are feeling. I find acknowledging spirits very helpful. Ones that I am thrilled to cohabitate with can be a bit frightening until I start to chat with them.
I like the meditation exercise that wasw already given to you. We did that type of meditation in "Stress Reduction Through Exercise". That was a college class that had a lot of roots in Tai Chi.
I wish you every success!

Well, to be honest with you, I spent most of my younger life feeling that there were things around me that I couldn't see, but could see and possibly hurt me. I had to work with it for a while because I love to meditate, and I couldn't when I felt like that. It really helps to pray for protection from anything that can harm you before you start your work. Try to remember that nothing really can hurt you. Fireswimmer and Atercorax have great ideas too. I have one to add to theirs, I like to smudge my room whenever I can. Try doing a regular cleaning of where you meditate, then smudge the room ( keep your windows open ) command anything harmful and negetive out of the room. I always notice a big peaceful difference afterwards.

:spaceman: Many people tend to have a certain amount of fear when first starting to meditate. I did this when I first started. I was able to put myself into a trance and had the feeling that "I was no longer here" and immediatly I 'came' out of it.
I asked a Yoga master about this and he told me that I would need to get over it because unless you are laying in the middle of a railroad track with a train coming, nothing is going to hurt you. Whenever you feel limited are fear, you will always come out of it, back to earth as it were.
Smuding is a good idea if you feel you need some protection. I have used Sage. Or draw an imaginary circle, but most of all, relax. The four fold breathing exercise mentioned is an excellent method to help you relax and to get into meditation. You may even try to find a guided meditation tape. I used this method when I first started and it does help. After awhile, you won't need it. But it may help eliminate your feeling of someone else in the room that is invisable by having the sound of a comforting and mellow human voice. Music is also good. I often use a classical slow type music to help me relax like Val volde (sp?) Four Season or sometime even Rovals (again sp?) Bolareo or the Gregorian chant. Celtic instrumental music or any sound that is relaxing.
Hope these suggestions help.

Yes, that helps me too! Music, I like raga for meditation and sometimes Enya. Even nature sounds. You could also use incense and other things to help you focus and are pleasing to you.

It probably is just human instinct but if not its good to no that Im no the only one who gets it

Do you meditate in the dark? It sounds to me like the monkey mind is playing fear into the picture. Sometimes when I'll journey in the dark, at first I'll feel fear or like a presence is near me. It's just my mind. Then I clear my mind, and simply look into the darkness, letting any thoughts float by like clouds.
Try a different room, try it outside with the sun and birds, and try visualising yourself being shielded and protected as soon as you close your eyes. Then, immediately begin breathing, so that you are focused on breath and nothing else enters the mind. Good luck.
