Im new and i dont know much of anything at all. But the other night when i was walking down the street at like 230 in the morning i saw this cat running at me. i thought it might have a disease or somtin so i didnt touch it and just kept walking. And the cat was gone. the next day i went out side and the same exact cat was in front of my door. it was rather nice. Then i went inside and came back out and it was gone again. I told one of my more experience pagen friends and she told me it was an omen but i dunno wut it meant and ive been thinking about it for days but i just dont know. do u have any ideas?

The great thing about omens is that they can mean whatever you want them to mean at any time. And if you were wrong, you can just say "I must have missed the omens that said the original omens were incorrect".

There are soooooooooooo many superstitions when it comes to cats! Here are a few:
A cat onboard a ship is considered to bring luck.
It is considered bad luck to pass a black cat after 9pm
Halloween Superstitions: In North America, it's bad luck if a black cat crosses your path and good luck if a white cat crosses your path. In Britain and Ireland, it's the opposite.
Bad Luck: Black Cats - In ancient Egypt, the Goddess Bast was a black, female cat. Christians, wanting to rid society of all traces of other religions, convinced the ignorant that black cats were demons in disguise and should thus be destroyed. In the process, they also destroyed the kindly ladies who cared for the cats, believing them to be witches. Being demons, a black cat crossing your path would create a barrier of evil, cutting you off from God and blocking the entrance to heaven.
A kitten born in May - a witches cat
A black cat crossing your path - good luck (A white cat in USA, Spain and Belgium)
A black cat seen from behind - a bad omen
Stray tortoise shell cat - bad omen
Cat sneezing once - rain
Cat sneezing three times - the family will catch a cold
USA belief - A cat washing on the doorstep - the clergy will visit
Killing a cat - sacrificing your soul to the Devil
Kicking a cat - Rheumatism
A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it. - Italian superstition
It is bad luck to see a white cat at night
Dreaming of white cat means good luck
If a cat washes behind its ears, it will rain. - English superstition
A cat sleeping with all four paws tucked under means cold weather ahead. - English superstition
English schoolchildren believe seeing a white cat on the way to school is sure to bring trouble. To avert bad luck, they must either spit, or turn around completely and make the sign of the cross.
A black cat crossing one's path by moonlight means death in an epidemic. - Irish superstition
A strange black cat on your porch brings prosperity. - Scottish superstition
A cat on top of a tombstone meant certainly that the soul of the departed buried was possessed by the devil. Two cats seen fighting near a dying person, or on the grave shortly after a funeral, are really the Devil and an Angel fighting for possession of the dying/dead persons soul.
To see a white cat on the road is lucky.
To kill a cat brings seventeen years of bad luck. - Irish superstition
When moving to a new home, always put the cat through the window instead of the door, so that it will not leave.
In 16th century Italy, it was believed that if a black cat lay on the bed of a sick man, he would die. But there's also a belief that a cat will not remain in the house where someone is about to die. Therefore, if the family cat refuses to stay indoors, death is coming.
The old alluvial tin streamers had many taboos about using the names of animals and birds which they might meet with in the mines; and so referred to the owl as the braced farcer, the fox as the long tail, the cat as a rooker, and the rat as a peep.

Yes, it was an Omen that the local pound will be visiting to pick up strays :tongueout
On a more serious note before I assume that something is an Omen I ask myself several questions.
1) 'Was the animal in a place I wouldn't expect it to be?' Would someone expect to see a stray kitty on the road at night?
2) Was the animal behaving in a way that was unusual or odd? Would it be odd for a kitty to see a person and run to it...wanting to be petted perhaps?
As for it coming to your door...*shrugs* it obviously wanted attention since it ran to you the night before. There's certainly no reason that it wouldn't follow you home. As for it disapearing? Well, I have a cat and cats are pretty good at being there one moment and vanishing the next. Doesn't mean it's a supernatural kitty...just means they're very silent movers.
No, I require a little more than an encounter with a stray cat while Im taking a walk to convince me that there is something supernatural afoot. My Omens have to come with all the subtley of a 20 lb frog dropping out of the sky and landing on my head. But that's just me :tongueout

I'd take it as an omen that a cute furball needs a friend! :)
I don't go for cat superstitions... ever sence a Halloween (predating me being pagan.. so that's what it was) in the old part of a cemetary. A lovely black cat crossed our path, stopped and looked at us, and kept going. It was one of the better days in my childhood. Perhaps the cat was trying to tell me something about my spiritual future! :D
