I'm just curious about this, I see them both mentioned a lot, but I have heard some people say that they don't need a bolline.

The atheme is a ritual tool, used for calling the quarters and representation of the phallic symbol of the god.

The boline is the tool used for havesting herbs, and inscribing the candles for ritual, etc.

I would never use my athame for harvesting and inscribing. That is my belief. I have both for their designed purposes for my path.

I have both as well. I use both my athame and my wand to focus my power...I use my boline to chop herbs and carve symbols in candles and such. Some paths use one knife for all things. You don't have to have an athame if you prefer using a wand or even your finger in your magick. It's a matter of personal preference for everybody :)

tradition says that the only thing an athame should be used to cut is the handfasting cake. i have never heard of using the boline for etching candles, only herbs.

Intresting. I don't have either. But I would think one would need a boline more than an athame. Or at least I would. I don't really do much as far as cutting herbs and such. I do some inscribing which I use a little pewter letter opener for. I also use a wand instead of an athame.

Yeah, the other term for boline is "working knife". So the athame is used specifically for ritual purposes, and the boline is used within ritual to actually cut stuff. :)

I voted neither, but I own both, just never use either of them. I figured out a long time ago the power of the tool came from the user (me) and whatever I use to cut my herbs, mark my candles, or cast a circle work just fine. :dancy:

Tradition also calls for the athame to be used when casting a circle, does it not?

I use my Athame to represent Fire. When it comes to casting a circle or directing energy, I use my wand. I would like to own a Boline, but don't find it a must in my working. To be honest I use a kitchen knife to chop herbs or inscribe in candles.

I can just say that my Hubbie has bought me a beautiful Athame for my Birthday. He's sure I'm gonna stab him one day, when I'm in a PMT rage........te he he

Well, I use my wand for all my circle casting and sending energy. My athame I use to Inscribe the candles, use for spells, and for the Air element. Am I backwards? I guess I would get a bolline though, if I used a lot of herbs that needed cutting.
