View Full Version : My ebay bid was cancelled!!!!!!
Aine of the Fae

I collect prayer beads of all kinds, and I bid on an antique rosary in black beads and silver tone metal. The pater nosters (big beads on which you pray "Our Father...") are carved and the Hail Mary's (beads on which you pray "Hail Mary...") are solid and oval shaped. The miraculous medal is original, although it doesn't look like the crucifix is, although the crucifix is nice.
Anyway, I placed a max bid that was considerably higher than the current bid, because I really wanted it. Opened me email a few minutes ago and the seller cancelled my bid. Why? Because my bidding history shows a trend of bidding for "Occultic, Wiccan and New Age" items. I looked through my bid history (not very long) and there is a bunch of Mary Kay consultant supplies, a hematite rosary and a Buddhist Mala. That's it. Because I bid on, and won, a Buddhist Mala, I am now barred from buying rosaries from this woman. And they are just the kind I'm looking for too! Antiques with family histories!!!
Oh, I'm so mad!!!!!!

perhaps they feel their beads need to go to a Good true Christian Home. I am thinking that they are looking at your other purchases and thinking perhaps it would disrespectful to let someone who dablles eleswhere have them. What good christian would need other religios items from other faiths.
Not saying this is true but perhaps this is what she is thinking.

Ooohh... You would love the rosary that my hubby has...
It's made of seeds from some really special tree, and has a little reliquary in the crucifix for the ashes of.. somebody... (I gotta pay more attention when Memere tells the story of it..)
But it came from his Pepere and is really close to the family, so it can't go anywhere.

Cancelling your bid was wrong. I've heard of this happening before, same situation. the seller decided not to sell to certain people because of their past purchases.
If a seller puts something up for sale there should be NO strings attached. If they're selling the item they want money, once it's sold it's none of their business what happens to it.
Deciding who is "worthy" is tacky and ill-mannered.

There was a similar thread posted here awhile back. A woman who was selling rosary beads on ebay was very clear on her listing that she would cancel bids from people who had ever bid on anything "occult, profane, New Age, pro-abortion, or anti-Catholic". If the listing for the beads you bid on didn't state that clearly, then you might have a reason to complain to the folks who run ebay, or at the least leave her negative feedback.
Here's the other thread:

That's a good idea, Lunacie. If she didn't state it right-off, then it's extra-tacky of her to cancel your bid because she doesn't see you worthy of having them. In my opinion, it's really up to God to decide who is worthy to have her rosary beads. I don't think it's a very "Christian thing" of her to do that. The Priest here at the Catholic Church I go to would disapprove. :/
And I hope you get them. Let us know if your husband's ID won you those rosaries!

I hope you husband won them!! That was a very rude thing to do...cancel a bid because you don't 'match her standards':flamer:
If she is so worried about where her beads will end up, she shouldn't have them in a public auction like that. There must be an auction site for strictly christian items (theres one for just witchy stuff)....she should go there!

Have to say, I agree here. This seems to me like discrimination. For all she knew, Aine was buying the Buddhist statue to blow it up like the Taliban did in Afghanistan. Down with the infidels and all that.
Sheesh!
Oh well, if ebay allows it, then I guess she can do it. But morally, I think it's wrong and fiscally stoopid as well...

Just did a quick Google and there really are Christian auction sites. Does seem like if you're going to be that discriminating you might want to use those, unless you're wanting to seem "holier than everyone else", eh?

as for the beads, i think that it's morally wrong for her to discriminate, but you know that it's not going to stop her. as long as you get the beads in the end, all is well, and if you don't, then it's just not meant to be :)

My thought was that what if I were someone who is seriously seeking God (I am ) and was very interested in the Catholic church (I am, but also very turned off by the whole infallible Pope thing....)
What kind of an impression does that make? "You can't have my rosary because you aren't good enough..." At which point I say f*** you, and go off and become a witch.

Honestly, I think this sort of discrimination is silly given many eBay seller's natures.
I have on occation gone searching for bladed weapons for my SCA/Renn Faire activities and thus start searches using the keyword SCA knifes or SCA swords. Half or more of the daggers have the keywords SCA and WICCA or Athame added together. Looking more into the listing, one can clearly see this sort of blade would never be used by a SCAer for his/her costuming, as it is so rediculously non-period, it's apparent to people who haven't done Medieval period weapon research.
Now, tell me and do be honest: do you really beleive all eBay sellers have a clue as to what the keywords they are imputing mean?
I know for a fact that they don't.
Oh and by the way, Jenne, a "Buddhist Mala" isn't a statue. A mala is a Buddhist or Hindu prayer bead necklace (the Catholics call this peice of jewelry a Rosary.) There are a lot of beaders who will by mala's at online sources (such as eBay) just for the beads on them. Sometimes you can get the beads for cheaper strung as a mala than you can get the same beads from a supplier. I wonder if this seller knows that.
Editted to add:
I have also had a bid canceled from someone for this sort of reason. My bid was for a Knight of Columbus sword, but my bid was canceled for bidding on those EVIL Magic: The Gathering cards....apparently this person doesn't know M:TG is a game.

That is so true! I want to make a rosary from rudrakshah beads, however to buy the beads isn't exactly cheap. However I can get a rudrakshah mala (108 beads!) on ebay for less than $5 !!! 108 beads is MORE than enough to make the rosary, in fact I'd have enough to make a couple of decade chaplets for shorter devotional prayers!
And before anyone throws a fit that I'm using rosaries "incorrectly" I actually pray ONLY the rosary on rosaries, only buddhist prayers on malas... etc...

:eyebrow: that figures!
I found these two subjects.......
Cancel Bids
In general, sellers should not cancel bids on their auctions.
Legitimate reasons to cancel a bid include:
* A bidder contacts you to back out of the bid.
* You cannot verify the identity of the bidder after trying all reasonable means of contact.
However, there are tools in place to let you cancel bids.
Are there eBay members you'd rather not sell to?
If you know that you don't want to sell to certain eBay members, you can put them on your blocked list. Members on that list won't be able to bid on any of your listings until you remove them from the list.
.......so I guess she can get away with being has hypocritical has she darn well pleases:whatgives

The guidelines may be there, but eBay doesn't care to enforce them. My mom bid on a computer before she had any feedback. She had won and paid for 3 auctions, but hadn't gotten any fb yet. The seller cancelled her auction saying he couldn't contact her. He never tried. She complained, and eBay said that he could refuse who ever he felt like for any reason.

What bugs me is the holier than thou attitude. As if she's perfect and so no one who isn't perfect can bid on her items!!! Not to mention the fact that Mother Mary instructed the rosary be prayed to aid in the salvation of lost souls!!!

Sorry you had to go through that Aine and I hope you got it anyway. (*grins* Kudos on the quick thinking with having your hubby bid)
However, *shrugs*, it's her stuff, and she has the right to sell it to whomever she choses. That's just the way life works.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if a bunch of us MWers went and bid on her rosaries and she had to spend all her time cancelling all of us? :bubbles:
Heh funny! I was going to come in here and mention the same thing!! Drive her crazy for a wee bit! I know I ahve some New Age, witchy stuff on my feedback. Knowing my luck though, she wouldn't cancel my bid and I'd end up winning!!! I say it's worth a shot though!! LOL

After all that, I lost it when my internet connection kicked me off 2 minutes before the end of the auction and someone else came in and outbid me by 27 cents

Aine,
I have a rosarie and what appears to be a small "bracelet" made from the same material.
I can take a dig photo for you if you want to buy it or trade something or what ever. I bought them in all places a 2nd hand shop. I was going to throw them on eBay, but never got around to it. I asked my best friend (who is catholic) if he wanted them and he said "thanks, but no" (don't worry he wasn't pissed or anything, he only uses te one when he was a child) and I respect that. But if you want them for your collection, I'd love someone who will appreciate them, have them. I mean obviously it wasn't important to the person it used to belong. Unless they became one of us ;)
And Laisrean is correct... it's the same seller from earlier this year. I remember reading about it before I joined. Yeah I was a'trollin'

I'd love to see them! Is the bracelet beaded? If so, how many beads? Very often you will find bracelets with ten beads, and perhaps a crucifix. They're called single decade rosaries (as opposed to the standard 5, 15 or even 20 decade rosaries!)

I was thinking about it, but probably not. I'll just keep bidding for her rosaries using hubbies id and she'll never know
Though do you want to be putting more money in her pocket? I guess to it seems more karmic justice that her attitude has lost her business.
