Hey
I feel cacky cos I was supposed to be going away for a night to the coast tonight and it's been cancelled. Iwas gonna walk along the beach and generally get my knotted hanky on on the beach and get my pasty white body reddened by the ineffective British sunshine, but no.
My g/f is offit and not wanting to travel, so I've got a night in with MW and BB!
Ho hum! :fishsmack

I was going to Scarborough. Quick look round the castle, kiss me quick hat and a general change to the ongoing monotony of work and DIY house improvements!

Tell you what...I'll swap you the endless summer/surf/sand that is Australia for just one of your nights stuck at home in the UK.
-sigh- Is it rainy? Are you getting that long, slow sunset I just never see over here?
*feels very homesick*
Sorry. Moping in my own misery.
Hope your evening improves :D

OOh Scarborough! Do you live in Yorkshire? Um...of course you don't have to answer that if you'd rather not. Just curious.
I live near the city of York, you see. Possibly not for much longer, but that's another story.
Anyway, hope you feel a bit less 'cacky' now.

Yeah I'm in Yorkshire. Castleford to be precise, near Leeds. (the sign on the town states 'historic roman settlement' although the site of that is now buried under the Jobcentre!)
Whereabouts in York are you? I love York. I used to attend a CoA gathering there last year and I'm gonna take a day there this week and take a river boat ride if the weather holds up.

Not far from the city centre...it only takes about 15 minutes to walk. Do you know an area called Osbaldwick? I'm not far from there.
I'm really fond of the city of York myself. It feels like a village! Which is a real change for me since I come from quite a large city. I love all the old stuff, the city walls, the medieval buildings and such. Lots of stuff to do too...I went on a ghost tour when I was first there, it was great fun!

I've heard of Osbaldwick. I did a ghost tour myself there once and went on the 'Ghost Boat' a couple of years ago which goes from outside the Kings Arms Underwater pub :D
I do like Scarborough but my absolutely favourite place would have to be Beck Hole, near Goathland. Used to spend many happy hours in and around Whitby too.
I used to live in Monk Fryston, nr Selby. Hey, have they caught the guy suspected of those murders yet?

I don't actually know what's going on with the manhunt now. It was kinda scary 'cause one of the murders was reasonably close to us, in Strensall. :blushake:
lol the Ghost Boat...I heard an amusing story about that. One Hallowe'en, a couple of students from York Uni are supposed to have got dressed up and re-enacted a murder in front of all the passengers on the boat, at the exact spot it was supposed to have happened in, like, the 1400s or something! And just as the tour guide person was saying "There was a terrible murder..." blah blah. The passengers got quite a fright haha.

Heh... I'd be happy if I was less than a two-day drive from the ocean. :wah:

The ghost boat is well cheesy, but worth a trip. No murders took place whilst I was on it, although a couple of college girls did flash at us from the riverbank!!!!

Lol Jaroson, at least you got your money's worth!
And now, fellow MWers, I bid you goodnight.

Woot! The Shambles! :D Hooray for wonky streets.
York has real character, doesn't it? So many unique aspects...the walls, the minster, all kinds of neat shops, including various pagan-esque shops. There's a herbalist in the city centre which has a really good stock. Everything you need for making your own ointments, perfumes and stuff. Plus you don't have to go very far at all out of the city centre to find all kinds of greenery. Best of both worlds, in my opinion.

Oh, I spent a whole day walking those walls, and going up into Micklegate Bar (did I spell that right?) and seeing the little museum in there...I stayed there for 3 days, which was no-where near long enough.
I came across this beautiful, but boarded-up parish church and graveyard called St. Martins. Frrom memory, it was boarded up in the very early 1900's (I think), though, the church itself is some several hundred years old.
I had afternoon tea at "Crumbles", a tea-house built in the 1400's where all the floors are sloping up and down, and the doorways are so short they have padding on the tops to stop you bruising your head :)
Honestly, there is no other place like it...wow am I homesick now.....

Yeah, morrigen, You spelt it right. My boyfriend works on Micklegate, at the top end, quite near the bar! and I know the church you mentioned too. You should come back and visit some more. :)

I'm originally from Lowestoft, but have been stuck in Australia for quite somee time due to my S.O. and I both finishing a Doctorate and a degree respectively.
But as soon as we're done, we're moving back. I wouldn't move to Lowestoft though (it's sweet, but a little dull).
I actually want to move to York or surrounding areas....I can't wait....:)

Where exactly is Lowestoft?
Wow, you sound like a brainy couple! :) What brought you to Australia? Is your partner Australian? Just curious.
I moved to York to go to University...there are some really nice areas close to campus. Rural places, fields and so forth.
I'm so glad to be talking to someone else who thinks York is special. My SO is less than keen. He prefers BIG cities.

It's east...near Norwich. it's a piddly little fishing town that now relies on tourist dollars...it's got a lovely beach, and is very cute...but I'd go mad in a few weeks if I lived there.
My folks dragged me out to Aus when I was a child...I've still got all of my other relatives in the UK, and I keep going back, because it *calls* to me, iif you know what I mean.
My partner, funnily enough is also an ex-pat, who moved to Aus when his father passed away when he was a teenager. We met in Australia...these things work out very oddly sometimes :)
He's originally from Cornwall.
I must admit, I also love London to bits...but it does have a distinctly different feel than York does...London makes for a great place to play and shop and go manic, but York would make for a lovely home.
So, the partner's finishing a doctorate in bioinformatics, which should be finished by the end of the year, and I'm finishing a degree in Sociology and Psychology, hopefully next year. Unfortunately, we have to work around our 15 month old son. I can't wait to show him York :)

Ironically, I want to move to Australia... Sucks that their immigration laws are so tight, it's damn near impossible to get in.
