:woot: I've found several letterboxes right in my area! I started collecting them, even picked up a "hitchhiker" last summer, but have yet to go out this summer.

Basically, a person takes a weatherproof container (Ziplock sandwich containers are great for this), put into it a blank notebook and a rubber stamp with an inkpad. They then hide it somewhere where it won't likely be disturbed (stone walls are a favorite around here), and write up clues to how to find it and post them on the net.

A collector comes along with their own blank book and identifying rubber stamp. They use the clues to find the box, open it, stamp their book with the stamp from the box, and stamp the book in the box with their stamp. "I was here" kinda thing. Then they close it up and put it back where they found it.

A "hitchhiker" like i found, is a small stamp with ink and book that gets left in a letterbox, and when found, is picked up and brought to a new location, another letterbox. Its book gets stamped with the location it's in plus the finder/hider's stamp.

It's cool, and it gets you out exploring areas you might not otherwise have gone to. Some of the ones I found were on trails I hadn't been down before, and one was tucked away under a stone in an old house foundation.

Very very neat. :)

Some people like to make their clues into riddles, though. I know of one that's hidden in Pulaski park, whose clues are a riddle written in Polish. No way I'd be able to find that one. :D

Lots of people buy rubber erasers and use Xacto knives to carve their own stamp.. That way you know yours is original and you won't be confused with somebody else... :D

I haven't tried letterboxing, but I'm familiar with it. However, I love love love geocaching!

Sylvan, I know you're in RI - if you ever want to go caching/letterboxing together, let me know. :)

Cool! :D Unfortunately, it looks like the site where I'd gotten my clues from has been shut down. :( I wonder if I printed them all out, or only some... :twitch:

This seems cool. I remember seeing a site a while back where people did the same thing, but they left actual books they no longer wanted somewhere. Then on the site, they would list clus as to where they left the book.
