Hi there.

I recently decided to collaborate with my brother and enter the Resident Evil poster contest. So we did. We didn't get into the finals...oh well. Anyway, I waited until today so that I could compare the winners to the work I did, and figure out what I could do better for next time (This is my first attempt at any kind of photoshop work). I really did enjoy myself and would like to enter another photoshop contest in the future.

However, I think I'm being too biased toward my own two posters, and can't seem to figure out what I could have done differently. Duh.....

So, would you kindly step forward and tell me what you think I could have changed to fix my work? I figure that it would be better to get someone elses' opinion. Don't worry, be blunt.

Here's the link to the 5 posters that made it into the finals: http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/residentevilapocalypse/postercontest/vote/

Here are my entries:

ok your posters look nice but the only difference that i am noticing is that the others seem to look "darker" does that make any sense?

edited to add : that i think yours are just as good. but that it is a matter of personal choice of the people choosing, they probably had tons to choose from. who knows why really?

your posters are wonderful, especially the one on the right. The others are nice too. An honest opinion....I'd probably pick the others. yours are good though. :cool:

Hmmmm...now that I look at everything, perhaps mine weren't creepy enough? I think you guys were right about not being dark enough. heh, heh, I'm not much of a horror fan. I figure that I probably missed something with that.

My opinion, yup they could be more mysterious and dark.

Um... I hate offering criticism, and here I graduated from art college... now all the posters have the same problem, yours and the winning choices: they're two straight-forward, too average. Now, movie posters tend to be like that, I agree, but if you'd put in one kick-ass element in an otherwise standard poster, something that made it different--not scarier, not more mysterious, not darker-- but a different visual element at attract attention from the others. That's what really makes good design and advertising. Just think of the TV ads that really catch your eye: they're weird, or they're funny... they're different.

Your work was really well-executed, though. Congratulations on a first -time!

Also when I look at your posters I think "action movie" whereas when I look at the others I think more "horror movie" (except the last one ... but then the rendering there just looks awesome *____*)

Thanks Boogins! Don't worry about offering up critisism. I've got a real problem with my taste in things being "off" . It's always been that way. ......anyhow, I had so much fun with this, that I'm going to hunt down some more contests to enter. I'll also be filing everyones' comments away as constructive means to judge what I'm doing. There's nothing like a public forum to fix mistakes!

Judging by the ones that made it, I would say you just didn't use enough photoshop filters. :rolleyes:

Very nice work for your first attempt. :thumbsup:

I'd say it's because yours are more colorful on the whole... not as rouch/textured looking, and also they are more of what would appeal to a girl rather than a guy... they're trying to get the stereotypical audience for the genre, so the monochromatic, relatively goth look is what wins.

Darker=Eviler ... I guess. Personally, I like yours more.

The red one you made is awesome. I love the umbrella theme. However they did want a darker type movie. If you could make the poster more menacing then it would have been perfect for them. I really like the red one.
