View Full Version : Brigit's Eternal Flame
Morr
July 27th, 2004, 05:07 AM
Brigit was working overtime last night, and she sorta threw a ball of inspiration at me.
I was messing around online, just surfing through random sites, when I started going through sites dedicated to Brigit (both Pagan & Catholic)... I noticed that there are few online international circles where they are dedicated to Brigit and to keeping her flame alive.
This means that each circle has 19 members (usually women), to represent Brigit's 19 priestesses in Kildare, whom each participates in a 24 hour shift (from sundown to sundown - As the Celtic Calander represents the Daily Cycle) where each member tends to a candle/fire/flame etc during their shift and keeps it going, untill their shift is done, and then the next member in line begins their shift and tends to their own little candle/fire/flame in their house (using a candle/fire/flame that is dedicated to Brigit and for this purpose only). Now obviously most of us cant keep a candle/fire going in our house for 24 hours since we have other daily life stuff to do (wether its school, work, taking care of kids, family, friends, etc) - So during one's shift, he/she tends to the candle/fire for as much as they can within their 24 hour shift, as well as offer offerings to Brigit, etc..
These groups obviously dont just do the keeping the Brigit flame cycle going, but they become a close group and share magickal/spiritual experiences and their bond with Brigit.
I found this idea very beautiful, since I have a relationship with Brigit and I do feel connected to her. However, I also found that for each of these groups there is a membership fee. Which I didnt agree with.
So Brigit tapped into me and was sorta like - "Yo, Michelle, why dont you try to create your own little circle - but for Free!".. And I figured - You know what? That could be a REALLY AEWSOME idea.
Now I havent figured out how I'll bring this idea to life just yet.. But I have some time on my hands today and I will brainstorm and see how this can work. However, I wanted to share this idea with all ye Brigit daughers (and sons!), and see if there is any intrest.
Since there is a lot of trust involved here - as in trusting each member to tend to their flame on their shift as required - I am looking for people whom i know already and whom i can trust and know are dedicated to Brigit and this idea.
So whoever is interested and thinks that they can really handle this and be dedicated to this (meaning you get a shift AT LEAST once a month, somtimes two), and if you want to help me out and have ideas - please reply to this post or PM me.
Once I figure more things out, I'll post here as well. Also, if I get morethen 19 people interested, we can just open a 2nd circle, etc. the 19 is kept since its Brigit's traditional number.
Looking forwrad to your responces :D

While, I haven't begun to work with Brigit, this idea does sound facinating ...

Morr, I also have a connection with Brigit and would love to commit to a flame-tending with others. Lately I have been very drawn to Aset/Isis, but very much want to keep my relationship with Brigit alive and this would be the perfect way for me to do that. I know that you said you're thinking only people you know and I've been posting and hanging out here for a while, but you probably don't know me. But I do keep my word! You can PM me if you have questions or concerns.
I noticed that with some of the Flame-Keepers they say that people don't have to keep the flame going for the whole 24 hours, but keep it going as long as long as possible; are you thinking that would be an option? Just curious. This is a wonderful idea!

well when i meant someone i trust, i meant people here on MW. i may not know everyone personally, but i do know that the people who stick around on this community are dedicated and can be trusted :D
yea, flame keepers wont have to keep the flame going for 24 hours - i realize that for the most part its immposible and also dangoures. A flame keeper will keep their flame going for as long as possible for them, during their shift.

Morr, I've been working on developing a relationship with Bride myself as she's a very important part of the Scots Gaelic pantheon. I'd love to do something like this. I too have pondered becoming a part of those other circles, but the idea of paying the fee didn't sit well with me either. So I'd love to do something like this.

*bumping this one a bit!*
I've also begun brainstorming and making layouts for a website, for this little project... Theres still a lot to go, but I'm also waiting on more people to, hopefully, show intrest...
So, I'm working on it! :D

I remember reading about this a while back and thinking it was a brilliant idea, but the money aspect with a draw back for me. I've been developing a relationship with Brigit for the past couple of years and would love to be involved.

I love this idea Morr! I would love to join if you'd have me. I'm Scottish myself and I've had a connection to Brid (the scottish name of Bridget) for quite a while. And I really think I could keep a 24 hour candle. Just give the word.

I would be interested as well. Bridget has been throwing herself at me lately in her form as a Christian saint. I thought I was going nuts.... she's one of two saints who keep coming up EVERYWHERE......

I don't have any name suggestions as yet, but I'm thinking that something in Gaelic, either Scots or Irish, would be a really nice touch, as she seems to have been most widely worshipped by the Gaelic speaking tribes. Not that others didn't, just that she was more popular in those regions.

Since you liked the idea of Gaelic, how about this: Reul Iuil Brighde. It means Guiding Star of Brigid/Bride and is usually used to refer to the ornament placed over the heart of the brideog. For those who don't know a brideog is an effigy of Brigid made of rushes or oats that is decorated with ornaments, flowers, greenery, and shells, then carried around by young girls from house to house and then into the fields at Imbolg. And I rather like the idea that our flames would be known as her guiding star.

Glad you liked it. :bigredgri
Also, I was thinking it might not be a bad idea to start a mailing list so that we can all keep in touch easily. I know you can start one at Yahoo Groups in just a few moments. That way if there is any news we need to share about the circle, such as if one of us will be going on vacation and won't be able to tend the flame for our shift, or anything else we just have to send it to one place and everyone will receive it.
Ohhh, and are we planning on following the days as the Celts did, with each new day starting at sundown? And how will we deal with time differences? I know your time in Israel is going to be quite different than my time here on the East Coast in the US.

Oh as for pronunciation for those who are curious it should be (or is close to, I'm not perfect as I'm still learning) rail ew-il breej-uh. The word I question most is Iuil because it's really hard to transpose. Basically that particular tripthong (iui) is ew followed by a short i. It shouldn't really be seperated into two syllables, but it was the best way I could show the ew short i combo.

Mòrag Elasaid MacDhòmhnaill, and Morr, I love the name too! I was just about to start looking through my Irish-English dictionary, but I love it. :)
Anything I can do to help? Thank you, Morr, for starting this! I've been trying to think of a good, meaningful way to honor Brigit on a regular, respectful basis and this is so perfect. Isis seems to be taking up loads of time lately and it will be great to have a designated time for Brigit. Yay!
And again, if you have any questions or concerns about me, feel completely free to PM me!

as of now, according to our Yahoo group, we are 12... I invited 2 new members who sent me their applications.. So we are 14.. I guess... which is quite a good start, in my humble opinion!
i talked to Kay, and she might be able to post a Sticky in this forum, with a detailed description of Reul Iuil Brighde, so anyone who enters the Gods & Goddesses forum, can see it right there :D
PS - Morag, if you can PM me the explination of what Reul Iuil Brighde means & its correct pronounciation in English, that would be awesome (I'll post it on the site). Thanks :hugz:
