Starlight in her blue eyes,
sunlight in her golden hair,
bone and sinew, all new flesh
and promises, she
tentatively leaps from
baby girl to precocious youth,
following a path of slick stepping stones
across childhood's murky pond.
I pray to the Universe,
To forces unknowable;
Guide me.
Teach me to teach her.
Help me to know her.
How will I save her,
the dangerous one,
the one I do not understand?
What nature has given me
through the marriage of DNA,
the division of cells,
the blood and feral cries of birth,
let me now make mine by faith.
Make me all she ever
Needed me to be;
the stable one,
Gentle, wise, responsive.
Where her emotions teeter,
Make me the point of balance.
When she is wrong--
deceiver, coniver, thief--
let me be her right.
Unknowable Universe, I pray,
help me be all she needs to save her.
Make me her mother.
