So what are they going to do? Have the shool nurse yank the teeth out with a pair of pliers on the first day of school? **rolls eyes** Whatever.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of in my entire life! Granted, I think gold teeth look tacky, but geeze there teeth!

ok, I'm gonna be unpopular here, but....I can understand where they are coming from. Growing up in a city that had a freekin' HBO special done on the gang activity there, all the schools cracked down on anything that could be construed as gang-related. Heck, ya weren't even allowed to wear certain colored hats or bandanas to the mall b/c there had been so many innocents caught in cross-fire.

Plus....most schools had serious dress-codes like "no shorts, no tank tops, no sleeveless dresses, no mini-skirts, no dangly jewelry, no backpacks unless they are mesh or clear vinyl..."

Frankly, I think the kids should just be glad they aren't wearing uniforms (like I had to--I went to Catholic school, but my sister went to public school, so I'm pretty familiar with those restrictions, too.)

I understand where you're coming from...but this isn't down to just changing your outfit a little! A gold tooth is...attached to your mouth, right? What about kids who have to have them, or something? That just seems too bizarre to me.

They mention "grill" in that article. A grill is apparently a removable cap. I found this article which helps explain it: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2003-02-19/cityside.html

agreed. If it's necessary b/c of a dental issue, I'm sure the school would make an exception. It sounds to me as though they are banning the "decorative" gold teeth made popular recently by certain musicians...in which case I could see it as a form of jewelry & I imagine it would be fairly easy for a dentist to remove the gold cap.

Besides...my first thought was "who lets a kid get a gold cap that would be permanent just for fashion reasons?"

I think they look stupid anyway. I'm on the same side as Aine. If it's for a medical reason, it's different but I there are far too many kids with them to think they've all gotten their teeth knocked out or don't brush them or whatever.

They'll be banning pants next... after all, those are in all the videos too!

Honestly, this kind of thing is just stupid. It's about as useful as a band-aid on an amputated limb. The patient's head has been cut off, and we're trying to give him tylenol. Not going to work! If there's a gang problem, then the underlying issues need to be dealt with. The clothes don't make the gangs - the minds do.

There are some gangs that use finger nails as a symbol... mainly growing out the pinky finger nail on a specific hand. In Hamilton Ontario at some schools they require students to not do this.

I'm not too worried about it, either way. Who cares if you cant have gold teeth. Just deal with it, or change schools. As hard as you try, you can't fight the man over stuff like this. I think its appropriate to ban all gang related apparrel, and one could have just as easily gotten a white tooth as opposed to a gold tooth...

Besides, I think when its gotten to the point where having gold teeth is considered "bling" they can do whatever they want to stop it.

I'm so sick of hip-hop culture. Guys thinking they're pimps, girls dressing like ho's. I'm sick of it!
When did youth get so rediculous?! Ban the bling, ban the gold teeth, ban the hoochie skirts and just ban it all... there are other ways of expressing yourself... you don't have to walk around with a life size gold crucafix around your neck to be cool! If you believe in Christ then leave it at that.. Jesus bore his cross, so you don't have to!

I think it's a load of bull...Do you know how much trouble their own fears cause innocent people...when I was in school you weren't allowed to wear certian things or dress certian ways because of the whole gang thing....I think it's rediculous. And those who told the administration to go shove it where they needed to...were punished for dressing the way they wanted to and that included wearing bandannas. Give me a break! Get over it already. :strike:

As a person who lives just across the river from Augusta, (aka Richmond County) this is kinda stated wrong........They have banned gold 'Grill teeth"..........It has become a gang thing......And, like it or not.....kids are getting hurt by the gangs.........Kids I know and love.....My daughter in laws sis goes to a school where the gangs are most dangerous, and if this gets the badwords out of the school, I'm for it!! She lives a block and a half from the school, and her father picks her up from the school carrying a gun in full view.........he has a license to carry......she is very beautiful, brilliant and some of the skags there want to mess her up because of that......

I thought the only way to remove a capped tooth was to pull the tooth out!!! Or, perhaps, have a nice dental bill to replace gold with the fashionable silver!!!!!!!!!!!(sarcasm)

This gang stuff is old and tiring. Why not do something about the gangs instead of policing ever dam thing you ware?

I'm disgusted by the state of public (and even private) schools, so I'm sort of glad they're capping (no pun) fads. I think there's way too much peer pressure and way too much want to be in a gang going on.
But, I think the problem needs to be dealt with. Sell the schools, and use the money to pay for the parents to homeschool their own kids! Woo!
Bye-bye, peer pressure and idiothood!
Hello, lack of social life, to some degree, but that can be remedied by a mindful parent.

I'm definitely not sending my kids to school. (holds twinkles-in-eye closely so no one can get them)
