I used to love this as a greeting, until I realized (at about the age of 13), that it's said A-way, not A-vay. A-way makes me feel like I'm lisping

I also used to think that usurp was said us-urp, not u-surp, and was rather embarassed the first time I said it out loud to someone, because they laughed their head off. I also wondered why on earth anyone would call a king uh-ther, because it was so hard to say.

And finally...often when I would whine, as a child, my parents would say to me "Well, cry me a river". I was really really really confused about that, until (again) I was about 13, and finally said to my Mom..."What does a river in Crimea have to do with me whining?" :rotfl:

Does anyone else have funny mispronounciation or misinterpretation stories? :colorful:

I used to think asperagus was "asper-gus" 'cause I went to a foreign resteraunt with my parents when i was young and when my dad asked about side dishes the waiter said "asper-gus" and I guess my parents were making fun of him amungst themselves saying "I'll have the asper-gus" and I was too young to get it.

but all in all Ive caught on to words.. I still have a hard time with my spelling and Im 18 and going to be an english major... so... yeah... not good.

I have a tendency (unless I think about it) to pronounce the word freight like fright rather than to rhyme it with eight. Which wouldn't be a problem except the job I'm in requires me to say the word freight a lot. I didn't even realize I was mispronouncing it until a client brought it up.

Let's see ... up until my mid-teens I used to say wolf like woof and Quebec like Qbec ...

I once had a friend/room-mate who was very ditzy. One day she was telling us about her ex-boyfriend, praising him to the skys and telling us how wonderful he was. Proudly she said, 'he treated me like the ground he walked on!' - uh ... yeah

There was also the time she was putting together her resume and was having me proof it. Well, for a time she had looked after a boy with ADD and she listed that as one of her jobs. Except she spelled it out as Attention Defecate Disorder.

Good thing she was around, I tell you - we were so poor that we relied on her for entertainment! :hehehehe:

My absolute worst is Episcapol.

For the longest time I'd ask people what an "ep-eh-skop-al" was....they'd look at me like I was nuts, go figure!

i have a hard time with things that end in ag... like bag and flag... I just pronounce them different... but everyone else in my family does! I pronounce it like beg... beg, bag, beg, bag... sounds the same when it comes outta my mouth!

i also have this long-going debate about the word mayonnaise.. I pronounce it man-ayse.... and some people pronounce it may-nayse.... my friend even tried to take a poll once to prove it was supposed to be may-nayse, but it ended up pretty tied... now i'm wondering how everyone at MW pronounces it

My mother and my boyfriend got into a huge argument in my kitchen over the pronunciation of the word "forte". Chad kept calling it "fort" and my mother insisted that it was "fort-e". Teachnically they were both right, but "fort-e" is the most common pronunciation.
