MM all...
I was just corious about the deosil and widdershins casting of circles.....
if you go by the nature of the moon/sun...as wicca does...northern casting would be Deosil...as with the Southern Hemi....the casting should be widdershins...
Now I know that widdershins is negetive to northern and some southerns but it would make sence to follow the nature of things wouldn't it?
And also Sabbats.....for southern hemisphere witches the Sabbats are in a different order to the Northern...but yet i still find lots of people casting to the northern hemi?
This doesnt make sence...as the Sabbats are deffinently seasonal celebrations to celebrate the seasons...so Samhain...will be Beltane in the Southern Hemisphere......so it would make sence that we, in the south, should cast occording to the south...
I was just curious on your opinions on this.

Guess it's up to the individual but you've raised an excellent question.
I don't always cast deosil anyway, which is terrible to some people, but oh well :)

MM,
Well formost i think it is a personal choice...but in the effective casting of a spell, we are taught to get the correspondence right to make the spell more effective...but I see no real information on the difference between the northern and southern circle casting methods?
So yeah I just thought it might be a good topic to descuss.

Widdershins? Deosil? (deosil is pronounced "jez-uhl", btw)
What does it matter? What matters in ritual and magic is your intent. :p

Ooh! Now this is something I can answer!!! hehe
Some Southern Hemisphere people choose to do it the way it says in the books (widdershins=negative deosil=positive) however my experience is that you should go with what feels natural.
The first circle I cast (in Australia) I automatically went widdershins, it just felt most comfortable. To me in Australia, widdershins will always be positive/raising, and deosil will be negative/banishing.
When I got to America the energies were COMPLETELY different, I literally felt like I'd been turned upside down energy-wise. But circle felt much more comfortable being cast deosil than widdershins.
So my answer is go with what feels most comfortable.
As for the Sabbats, again some choose to go with the Northern Side of things, I had a friend who was English and moved to Australia later in her life, so out of habit she did things the Northern Hemisphere way.
I chose to follow the seasons, so it's completely reversed. Samhain in NH = Beltaine in SH and so on. You also have to remember that like in most places, some parts of the country don't have four clearly defined seasons, like in the Northern Territory in Australia where there are only two seasons "the wet and the dry".
I think sometimes with this it is interesting to look into the native/locals and their customs and work it into your own celebrations if you find it works for you.
Great topic!

Yes I agree, it does have alot to do with intisnct, and what feels right with a person.
I live in NSW, so we have very defined seasons....you can instantly tell when spring is coming and winter is leaving...and I tend to go with that, rather then dates so to speak.
And circle casting, because I was unshure wich way to proceed, I'd cast from the earth up, earth down...meaning.....I'd stand in my area, visualize energy coming from the earth forming into a protective sphere around me...then when I was finished I'd release the sphere from the top letting it settle back into the ground.
:D
This way has been very successful...and very comfortable to do...but I will try it widdershins as I want to find what is perfect for me...you never know...I may already have..
Thanx

I think that your technique is very nice!!! I do something similar to that myself nowdays as it's easy to do in smaller spaces. Go with what feels comfortable! :)

I cast deosil for the light half, and widdershins for the dark half, and on Moons i cast deosil for full, widdershins for new, and do a special one for the halves.

Well, don't hold youself to corrospondences, a spell or ritual just has a bigger energy boost if you do them, and a higher chance of succsess. But, i can conjure up a strom in the Dark of the Moon, if need be, BTW, i am a fire child at heart, so sometimes i do this when it should be left to the God, but most times only after a week or two of praying for rain, with no ritual.

Didn't the ancients do it in only 2 seasons? if i am not mistaken, the equinoxes were added later by the germans.

My first experience with magick was calling a storm....
I was 10 and I was meditating.....I visualized a storm coming...cos I loved to watch the lignting with my family from our balcony....I didnt notice the temperature drop...but mybrother was poking me to come inside as it was starting to rain.
My mother said I was out there for almost 2 hours.
But I must admit, I havnt done it again....my mother said that although it was a good occumplishment, it is not always good to mess with the nature of weather.
I beleive she was right, cos we had a week long drought of stinking hot days...
Coinsedence, or the 3 fold law?
Who knows? But I am leaning to the 3 fold law, as only 3 years ago I sent an EX-friend packing, and I emded up moving away as well!

well, it might just be that you drained the land ... i never had this prob, but then i am a water person at heart, which reminds of of something, but that is for another thread ... I like the lightening to. What i do is go oustside and jump on my trampoline and appeal to Zues for rain, then during i call on air (for the cloud) and water ( for the rain) to nurtue Gaia's earth. I point west and east then bring my hands together do face north. I leave lightning out entriely, so as not to hurt anyone or thing.
It has been there some times, but never struck anything that i know of.
