I posted this in my blog. I figured somebody here might be interested in reading it. Can you tell I love rats? ^-^
I was thinking about the relationship I have between Scsi (my 2+ year old ratty) and I. I've thought about my relationship with my rats before, but I never really stopped to REALLY think about it.
I've discovered that I trust Scsi, as I trusted Kazi, on such a deep level, it can't be explained. I really do trust my ratties more than anybody or anything. I have, in the past, set up play areas on the kitchen table of one of the houses I used to live in, let the ratties out to play, cooked dinner, and let the rats eat off my plate.
The rats will take anything from me to eat or chew on, sometimes so quickly that it makes me wonder if they ever stop to check what it is. If I keep offering a rat something and she doesn't want it, she'll eventually get tired of me asking and then take it and stash it somewhere. This happens with banana chips, mostly.
I've let Scsi open my mouth to see what I was chewing on. She's been known to lick my lips and my teeth. I trusted her to do that, knowing she wouldn't bite me by accident.
They can be so gentle. If I offer Scsi a raisen, she'll realize it's something really small. She'll just barely grab it with the edges of her teeth, so she doesn't grab my finger instead.
I've let the ratties run all around me while I worked at my computer/laptop/read a book, did paper work, etc. I've gone to Petsmart with Kazi cuddled in my shirt. I let Scsi take a nap, cradled in my shirt. When she did that, I didn't move the whole time she slept.
You see, there's a very strong bond between all of us. It surpasses mere trust and love. It helps to hold our little world together.
So, people, when you decide to get yourself a pet, or furry companion, whatever you want to call them, I urge you to consider rats. I also urge you to build on a trusting relationship, as it can really make your world a bit easier to live in.
