Very interesting article. It's amazing what an effect a symbol can have. all because of the way it's perceived. The ban definitely would have been unconstitutional, though.

The pentacle, oddly enough, was used for protection AGAINST witchcraft...o_O

Well, there are lots of things that are considered powerful/protective to witches, and are also used as defence against them. Rowan wood and salt come to mind immediately...I'm sure there are other things. I guess the theory is that if someone considers an object to have power or meaning, then it can also be used against them as well as used by them. Fighting fire with fire, so to speak.
