Well, I have a great book called "Animal Magick" that was a great help in finding familars. But, most of the time, I find when people look for familars they don't notice the ones they all ready have. Lots of times a familar will come to you. It can be an animal you have always loved, keep pictures of, or even have as a pet. For me, I have always has dreams of snakes as a kid. I never though on it too much, until I found paganism then it started to work for me.
Also, one thing you can also try is to meditate on nature, like picture a forest or a swamp and see what shows up.

In my experience, familiars come to you, all on their own. At least mine did. You might want to do a meditation to open yourself up to the experience of finding a familiar.
This is how mine came to me. My cat had been hit by a car, and killed. About a month after she died, I went to the pound, hoping to find a kitten or cat that looked like her. (kinda odd..i know). I didn't really see any who resembled her. But..as I passed a cage full of kittens, one of them reached her paw through the bars, and caught my arm. I loosened it, and tried to move on. She did the SAME thing again. So finally, I asked the warden (or whatever you call them)..to let me hold her. I picked her up..and she sat on my shoulder like a parrot. I wasn't TOTALLY convinced yet. So I picked up one of her sisters..a pretty tortie...nope...NO connection. And then I went on looking around the place. There were so many little adorable kittens there. Indeed, even my husband fell under the spell...and chose another for himself. A little all black long haired cat. But..I still didn't know if I'd found.."mine". I went back to the first cage of kittens, and put my finger through the bars. The kitten who had sat on my shoulder, took my finger and started licking it...while looking into my eyes. I knew that she was the one..or ..at least..I hoped she was. Well..we took her home, and we watched her eat her first tuna dinner....unlike most kittens, she was not at all afraid in a new environment. She didn't hide at all. She went allll around the apartment, exploring, and even tried to get to know our other two cats, and the other new kitten. After a while, I was very tired, and went in to lay down and take a nap. My hubby brought the kitten into the bedroom, and put her on the bed. She climbed up on my pillow, curled up..and stared deeply into my eyes. Then...she sniffed my eyelids..and licked them...and put her paw on my nose. It was like she was getting to know me...to "check me out"..and see if I was "really" her mommy. She decided i was. I've never met a cat quite like her. She really thinks that I am her mother. She's VERY communicative. She has differen't meows for differen't purposes. She cries when I leave the house, even if only to get the mail. She also cries when her brothers and sisters aren't home at night..if they are out playing..she worries..she sits in the window and cries. Sooner or later, they come in, and she runs up to them. She sniffs them, they bathe her in lick-kisses. It's sooo cute. She's very much like me, in fact. She's gets her feelings hurt easily. She's very emotionally responsive..She hates to be bored, or lonely. Very much like a little gemini (i myself am a gemini). All in all..the bond that she and I share, is like no other that i've ever known. My hubby and I talk about her almost non stop. She's the apple of our eye. I'm the closest to her, perhaps. But she shows her love to daddy too. She's our little princess..and she's my familiar. When my hubby and i argue, she often becomes the buffer. She'll go up to me, and lay on my lap, in a defensive manner..glaring at him. Or...at times, she'll go up to him, and start demanding his attention. And of course, as soon as she does that..his anger at me melts away..and we just sit and watch her. Gosh..I love my little Girl, Summer. (aka..kitten little).

My familar found me at my fiance's house. She had been hanging around for a couple od weeks on and off. She'd sit under one tree and watch the birds. Finally one afternoon I found some baloney in the fridge and went out to feed her. After about 45 min she was climbing on me, letting me pet her and even following me as well as my fiance around the yard. That night we went out and she found a spot that she could sit and se in the house. Roughly 3 days later she was in the house and was our new addition. After she moved in the house my fiance said that she was my cat. She was meant to be with us. The first time after she came into our lives I was going to do a Full Moon Ritual. I closed the door to the room I have like I always do, she sat outside and cried to come in. I let her in and she sat under my altar the entire time and watched me. She meowed softly and pured LOUDLY during it. She even ate and drank my offering with me. So you never know when or where you may find your familar. Goddess knows I wasn't looking for mine. She also loves to go in my room that I use for Rituals and magick and sit in the window.
As far as finding your familar try the meditation that was suggested. As well as keeping your heart and mind open. The next stray you see could be it.

Mine found me. My kitty adopted us, instead of the other way around. He was meowing one night last September outside my bedroom window. I ignored him, because I honestly thought it was one of my neighbor's cats. They have 17. I fell asleep and I still heard him when I woke up the next morning, I opened my front door and he came running up. I fell in love right there! :heartthro He looked like my old kitty, who died when my son was born (he was 17). I adored him, but I also had 3 big dogs at the time, so I wasn't so sure about introducing the kitty to the household, plus, my Dad had made it very clear years ago, he hates cats. Until our new kitty. Tobias T. Cat, is what me & my son named him. No special reason, just heard the name in my head when my Dad asked what we were going to name him. He's an orange tabby cat, with white spots here & there. He hangs out with me & my Dad all the time. On the computer desk, in my room, my bed, etc. He also gets along with our dogs (we only have 2 now :( ). When I do my rituals he comes in the circle and sleeps. He's an awesome cat and a great friend.

We found my little one under my boyfriends grandmothers house. There was a litter of about 6 all pure black kittens. They were all flea bitten and dirty, most had that Cat flu that kills them and conjunctivitis (sp?). My bf told me to stay away from them but as soon as I heard their noises I ran into the alcove they were in and ohhhed and ahhhed over them. My bf Greg said that he was taking them over to the house they belonged to and proceded to try and put them into a box. All but one of the kittens ran behind a curled up piece of green fencing mesh, but one of them stayed put. She was just staring at me, like she was waiting for me to pick her up, but didnt want to be, she reminded me of those Black bears (hence the name). As soon as I picked her up adn we just looked at each other, she was appraising me i guess and she snuggled up. When I picked up one of the other kitties in my other hand it bit and scratched etc and was pretty unpleasant, like most but Bear were. It was pretty easy to convince my bf to let me keep her at his house (used the sad gf eyes lol). I noticed early on that she was different than most kitties. Eg I CAN NOT!!!! play a normal card game with out her trying to join in and play as well - which means running off with the cards, jumping on them so they scatter and chewing on them, but when I bring out the tarot cards she will sit opposite me and watch doing the tilted head thing that I do when I pay close attention. She makes various noises during the course of this to show her approval. Although once I was asking something I didnt really want the answer to and was quite distraught as I was laying the cards out and she walked over and stood very diliberately the middle of the pack and stared me down.
Plus shes super cute :D

How to meet familiars; You can do a simple ritual to ask that one will find you. You can look in your local animal shelter. Don't be surprised tho if you become drawn to an animal you wouldn't have thought of - ie. a snake or rabbit instead of a cat.
It's important to remember what a familiar is. A familiar is not just a pet. Sometimes a familiar IS your pet, but they are so much more. You will look at them and know what they're thinking, as though they were speaking to you. You might be able to close your eyes and look through your familiar's at the world, to understand what he or she sees and thinks. You may be able to communicate with your familiar from another room without doing so vocally. He or she will be interested in your rituals and magickal tools (keep in mind tho, that all animals will be attracted to the energy involved with these things, and the presence of this habit alone does not necessarily indicate a familiar).
I have a rabbit, a dog, and two cats. One of the cats is my familiar. He is a pure black cat I found at our local cat shelter. A pic is attached of Orion.

One morning my mom woke me up with a phone call from work: did I want a pink cat?
I was confused as heck, did she mean a peach-coloured one?
No, she said pink, like cotton-candy pink. . . I was intrigued, and said yes. I got dressed and ran over to her work.
sure enough, dodging behind bushes and cars and the like was a long-hair angora kitten, whom some sickos had dyed (with permanent dye) bright, barbie-doll pink.
I started to try to catch him, then to my surprise he just looked at me from behind a bush, really stared into my eyes, then he walked right up to me. I picked him up and tucked him in my coat and took him home. I gave him a bath, trying to wash out the pink dye (this is when I found out it was perminant). I had recently lost my cat Tiger Lilly (whom I had had for almost 8 years. . . she was my familiar before, but it took loosing her to make me realize this. . . her spirit still hangs around me, though), and this cat just came to me. And at first I kept calling him by my dagger's name, but then I finally settled on a name that just fit in my mind, "Vincent."
after a few months, I had to move out to my dad's house. Vincent wasn't fixed, and my dad had a cat, so the house started to reek of male cat territory markings. . . needless to say, I had to send the cat back to my mom's house.
I found out a few months later that he had run away shortly after I sent him home. I havn't heard from him since. But I wish I had found a way to keep him. I miss Vincent.
Attached are two piccies of him. . .he's a bit damp, I took them right after his bath. He had the softest fur, even though it was pink.
I guess that familiars come and go. . . when they're needed, they come and when they've done their part, they leave. I remember the last time I saw my cat tiger before she left (I know that she went away to die). . . I called to her from the porch, she was across the yard. . . and she paused, just outside the yard, and looked back at me for a few long moments. . .I later realized she was giving me that last look. . . and then she walked away. I never saw her physically again.
When you're in need of them, or you're ready, you'll meet your familiar. That's my inturpretation, anyways.

Mine found me too, I really had no intention of getting another cat - honest!
My neighbours 2 cats had 4 kittens each in the same week. Of course i had to have a look at them, would have been un-neighbourly to say no, wouldn't it? I didn't tell my sons because I knew they'd want us to have one of them.
So i went into her house, they were just starting to walk and play with each other. They were all playing, when one left the rest and came straight up to me and just sat staring at me! I picked him up and he just snuggled up on my shoulder till i went home.
Couldn't forget him, so went back next door later that day to ask if anybody had offered him a home yet. There were only 2 kittens who hadn't been chosen, and my little one was one of them!
What else could i do? I took them both!
I've had cats most of my life, loved them all dearly, but this one is extra special, there's a real 'connection' between us.
